'Breaking Bad': How did everything get so screwed up?

Walter White asked that simple question above in last night’s episode while venting in Saul’s office.

Walt is now a greedy, cancer-free killer. Hank is paralyzed and emasculated. Jesse is joyously circling the drain. Skyler is a criminal accomplice. And Gale (*tear*)....all that’s left of him is a cheesy “Major Tom” karaoke video and a lab notebook filled with vegan recipes and Ron Paul stickers.

To put it simply, everything got so screwed up because of Walter White. And to illustrate that, Sunday’s episode was less about Walt and more about the world he’s created around himself, beginning with his wife. Skyler’s now a full-blown partner-in-crime doing all the research, logistical legwork, and, yes, play-writing in their Bonnie and Clyde act (“It’s a doozy, so hold onto your hats!”).

11 most ridiculous Japanese ads with American celebs

The Internet is undeniably making the world smaller.

And while this is a great thing for friends trying to stay in touch years after moving away from each other, there’s a certain sect of people who must suffer while the rest of us thrive.

'Breaking Bad': It’s not a lie if you believe it

Last night’s episode began with Walter White in front of a mirror holding a gun, channeling his inner Travis Bickle. And thus, for the second week in a row, we were faced with the rule of Chekhov’s Gun, which essentially states that if a gun is presented in act one, it better be fired in act three.

But this week the rule was blatantly shirked, despite the fact that the episode was again named after the weapon (“Thirty-Eight Snub”), which made for a clever piece of misdirection. So, besides that winking piece of gamesmanship, what else did “Breaking Bad” throw our way last night?

Most significantly, we saw three characters react in three different ways to Gus’ blood-spattered message from last week.

'Breaking Bad': It was worth the wait

The season 4 premiere of “Breaking Bad” was all about waiting.

Waiting for Gus to mete out his punishment. Waiting for Jesse to snap out of his vacant stare and speak (55 minutes, to be exact). Skyler waiting for Walt to come home, Hank waiting for his misery to end and the viewer waiting to see what Gale’s murder meant for Walter White.

And oh, was it worth the wait.
