All-stars and the top 10 revealed on 'SYTYCD'

Before I get to Thursday night's eliminations on "So You Think You Can Dance," I have to talk about all the news that Nigel Lythgoe and company had for us.

First and foremost, it was devastating to hear that Alex Wong has injured himself once again. Still keeping my fingers crossed that he will be a part of season 9!

Then, it was finally time to reveal this year's all-stars. I thought it would either be the same as last year's, or a brand new batch of them, and it turned out to be a little of both.

An Emmy-worthy 'SYTYCD' (and that's no jive)

An Emmy-worthy 'SYTYCD' (and that's no jive)

Bless you, Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

The Emmy nominee and guest judge on Wednesday night's "So You Think You Can Dance" said what we were all thinking - on more than one occasion, actually. But I want to draw particular attention to his comment towards the end of the episode that Cat Deeley deserves to be nominated for an Emmy. And lo and behold, it happened (alongside well-deserved nominations for several of the choreographers)!

There were certainly some Emmy-worthy dances, particularly from Jess and Clarice, who really emerged as a fantastic couple this week (just in time for them to be broken up). Their jive was the best I've seen in ages on the show, and their hip-hop was yet another example of great storytelling through dance.

How do you solve a problem like Ryan on 'SYTYCD'?

I'm completely at a loss after Thursday night's episode of "So You Think You Can Dance."

Once again this week, Ryan delivered a stunning performance, and once again she and her partner Ricky ended up in the bottom three.

I don't agree with the judges that Ricky is the second best male contemporary dancer on the show (that would be Mitchell), but he definitely didn't deserve bottom three status either.

New blood on 'SYTYCD'

It seemed as though many of the regular choreographers (with the exception of semi-regulars Mandy Moore, Toni Redpath and guest judge Travis Wall) were given the July 4 weekend off on Wednesday night's "So You Think You Can Dance."

The result was a mixed bag from several new choreographers, but the good ones were really, really good.

This time, I'll put the bad news first. Aside from the fact that guest judge Carmen Electra (who openly admitted she's not an expert on waltzes) didn't bring much to the table, there was that Sean Avaristo hip-hop routine with Sasha and Alexander that fell completely flat. Look for them in the bottom three tonight.

Time runs out for two on 'SYTYCD'

Thursday night's episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" left this viewer puzzled.

The choice for which female contestant to eliminate seemed obvious – after a sub-par performance on Wednesday night and a solo that was anything but "dance-for-your-life" worthy, it looked like Ashley was on her way out.

Don't get me wrong, I've sung Ashley's praises on this blog before (her performance in last week's jailhouse routine alone...), but this was just not her week. The other two, Miranda and Caitlynn, had excellent performances and terrific solos.

Smooches all around on 'SYTYCD'

You could feel the love in the room on Wednesday night's "So You Think You Can Dance," so much so that the judges started making out with each other.

Power couple Melanie and Marko's "NappyTabs" routine, which included a kiss halfway through, moved Nigel Lythgoe to (stage) kiss Mary Murphy (causing Cat Deeley to react by saying that it was like watching your parents kiss). Next thing you know, guest judge Kristin Chenoweth was kissing Lil' C, and Nigel was kissing him too.

You can't really blame them, because the hip-hop routine was absolutely flawless. I'd place it up there in the "NappyTabs" pantheon with "No Air" and "Bleeding Love." We'll be seeing that one again during the finale.
