'Community' is back: More fun, but still weirdIt's a scary, Chang-filled world out there, folks. So it's a good thing we have a brand new season of "Community" now. Welcome back, you crazy show, you. Just like last season it hit the ground running, this time with a musical number in Jeff's head, with the lyrics, "We're gonna have more fun and be less weird than the first two years combined!" That quickly fell apart, both for Jeff and for Dean Pelton, whose commitment to straightening things up around Greendale crumbled when he faced the almost Darth Vader-esque Vice Dean Laybourne (John Goodman, chewing the scenery). A 'sinking' feeling on 'Grey's' premiereLast night was the two-hour season 8 premiere of "Grey's Anatomy." There's a lot to cover, so let's get started... Derek is still furious with Meredith for tampering with their Alzheimer's trial - even though she did it to help Richard's ailing wife, Adele. Derek and Meredith, who were granted temporary custody of baby Zola, are sharing custody, living apart. Derek is living in the frame of the house he and Meredith have been trying to build for years, and slowly but surely making progress on - with the help of Owen. Cristina, whom Owen kicked out of the couple's (fire)house because she doesn't want to have a baby, is living with Meredith. She can't bring herself to terminate her pregnancy because she loves Owen. Alex, whom Meredith kicked out of her house for reporting that she tampered with the Alzheimer's trial, is bunking at the hospital. There’s tension in the hospital halls - Derek and Owen won't even look at Meredith and Cristina, a crop of new interns is starting (the requisite "A month ago, you were in med school being taught by doctors, today you are the doctors" was uttered - this time by Lexie) and it is the residents' last year of residency. ‘Whitney’ a dud in any eraWhitney Cummings may be Hollywood’s “It” girl of the moment, with two new shows premiering this week that she both co-created and co-produces. But there’s a good chance that spotlight will flame out after last night’s debut of her self-titled sitcom on NBC. It’s “Whitney,” the worst new show of 1998! Maria Bello is 'not in the mood' on 'Prime Suspect'In NBC's reboot of the British crime drama "Prime Suspect," you learn everything you need to know about Detective Jane Timoney (Maria Bello) in the first three minutes. The show kicks off as Detective Timoney is finishing a run. She hails a cab, and after a brief rude interchange with the driver, Jane’s had enough – and expresses this by slamming her gun against the cab's partition as the cab screeches to a halt. She’s not in the mood. A female homicide detective in NYC, Jane isn't afraid to resort to attitude when it comes to those who write her off, but Bello certainly isn't the first woman to play a strong female law enforcement officer. (Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson on "Law & Order: SVU" will always be my favorite.) Intriguing concept carries 'Person of Interest'What if, say, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs were hired by the government to create the technology to monitor all of the security cameras everywhere in the country? That's part of the concept of "Person of Interest," which premiered on Thursday night. A big weapon in the series' arsenal is the actor playing software genius Finch, "Lost's" Michael Emerson. He could make reading the phone book scintillating. When Finch bails a homeless man out of jail, who turns out to be a former CIA operative named John Reese, to look into disturbing patterns of behavior he spots on the security cameras, that's where the show quickly gets moving. Hitting the campaign trail on 'Parks and Rec'Thursday night's season premiere of "Parks and Recreation" picked up right where the season finale left off, with Leslie offered the chance to run for political office, and Ron informed that his first ex-wife, Tammy One, is in town. First of all, it was hilarious to see Ron scared out of his mind, opening up a vent to get a backpack full of supplies and heading for the wilderness. In the meantime, Leslie had a big decision to make, as her relationship with Ben could become a major scandal. After all, turning down a campaign wasn't an option for her: "While other girls were playing with Barbies, I was playing with the Geraldine Ferraro action figure that I made myself with a picture of her that I glued to a popsicle stick!" |
