Why Michael Fassbender isn't campaigning for an Oscar

This weekend's "12 Years A Slave" is nearly guaranteed for some Oscars attention in 2014, but Michael Fassbender isn't planning to be around for that.

The 36-year-old actor, who gives a powerful performance as a vicious slave owner in the film directed by Steve McQueen, tells GQ magazine in its newest issue that he won't be campaigning for an Academy Award this year.

"I'm going to be busy working," Fassbender said of the upcoming awards season. "I just don't really have time."

The star has been insanely busy lately, with "12 Years A Slave" and Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" coming out of this year before he gets to work on "Macbeth" with Marion Cotillard and a sequel to "Prometheus."

But if any of his performances this year is going to be a contender, it would for sure be his work in "12 Years," as GQ notes that it's "singular in the sense that no one has even attempted what he's doing here before: a man awash in plantation liquor, angrily in love with one of his own slaves, visiting every kind of nightmare on himself and his property, human and otherwise."

And yet, after having gone through the campaigning process for the Academy Awards before, the actor has no interest in foregoing work on a new production for the possibility of an Oscar nod.

"That's just not going to happen, because I'll be in New Zealand," he tells GQ. "I'll be on the other side of the world. You know, I get it. Everybody's got to do their job. So you try and help and facilitate as best you can. But I won't put myself through that kind of situation again. ... It's just a grind. And I'm not a politician. I'm an actor."

Fassbender's film, which also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Sarah Paulson and Benedict Cumberbatch, opens in select theaters on October 18.
