Eminem declares himself a 'rap god'

Where Kanye West just calls himself a god, Eminem is more specific.

The Detroit rapper has released a new single, "Rap God," from his upcoming album, "The Marshall Mathers LP 2."

The track is the ninth song on the album, directly following Em's earlier release, the '80s-inflected "Berzerk."

And, like "Berzerk," "Rap God" also "pays tribute to the old school ... though in a less obvious way," critiques Rolling Stone. "Rather than give his chorus to an R&B crooner like Rihanna or the New Royales' Liz Rodrigues, the latter of whom sang on his recent 'MM2' single 'Survival,' he instead delivers a straight rap refrain about feeling like a rap deity. His verses recall hip-hop history ... as much as his own history."

But, MTV suggests, "Rap God" is also unique enough to raise questions about how he's shaping his upcoming release.

"It seems that Marshall's focus on ('Rap God') is simply to have the most expertly laid verses," MTV says, "adding yet another wrinkle to his November 5 album."

If you're OK with explicit language, you can listen to "Rap God" here. What do you think? The single is now available on iTunes.

  2. HAHAH

I love how all you people on here are saying "anyone can rap" "rap is what you do when you can't play an instrument" "takes no talent to talk over a beat" Really? Well how about you become a rapper, sell millions of albums, win grammy awards and become rich and famous...

    • who?

Oh yeah. The other thing needed to be a rap star: millions of stupid people with no taste in music who will fall prey to slick marketing and part with their hard-earned money. By the way, HAHA, I don't see your name on the Billboard Hot 100 either.

Eh, fast rapping about monica lewinsky is SOOOOO 90's. Eminem's music has dated terribly, and this new album sounds like it was made in 93. Rap God? No – rap has-been.

Eminem is a lyrical and literary genius. He gravitated to the medium available to him in his youth. But, I truly believe that had he lived 500 years ago, we'd be studying him in universities as part of the great cannon of literature. You just can't keep that kind of genius down. His command of the English language is vast and subtle. He's often working on not just 2 but 3 levels of metaphor in a song. He read dictionaries cover-to-cover as kid. Ever tried that? Let me tell you, it's hard. "C" is damn long letter to get through, and you eventually want to go out & play w/ your friends. He was determined to "not let a word escape" him. Sure there's a lot BS that comes w/ his genre, and many fans have no clue what he's actually doing, but to write off his talent just because you don't appreciate or understand the medium is ignorant. Hope his new album lives up to talent.

    • Who?

Rap is what you do when you can't play an instrument or sing. Takes no talent to talk over a beat from a computer.

If his new album lives up to his talent, the leftover CD's will make nice targets at the firing range.

Oh please, saying he is a genius is as annoying as Kanye West saying he's a genius. Just because he can rhyme and uses shock tactics to get teenage boys into him, does NOT make him a fuking genius. Jesus christ.

You can understand every word he says, just have to listen and all of it makes sense. Eminen's music I believe is an acquired taste. Overall nobody has been as original as this rap god, great entertainment. He knows what he's doing There's not another like him! Good Chit!

Being the best rapper is like being the best garbage collector or sewer inspector. No big deal.

Em is a poet with amazing otherworldly control of syllables and dialect. I am really glad he has come into his renaissance. Solid Gold. I am glad I got to witness him in my lifetime. Really amazing stuff.
