Miley Cyrus' 'Bangerz': What's the verdict?

Miley Cyrus promised a different sound with her new album, "Bangerz," and it sounds like the 20-year-old pop star has delivered.

Her fourth studio release, which was officially released Tuesday but has been streaming online for about a week, has been largely well-received, with several critics noting how much of a departure it is from her prior three albums:

"Miley Cyrus spent a good portion of her adolescence playing two people on a television show, so it makes sense that her new album has something like a split personality," critiques the Los Angeles Times. "There's plenty more provocation on 'Bangerz,' which moves away from the glossy electro-pop sound of Cyrus' earlier records toward a grittier, hip-hop-inspired vibe."

Rolling Stone agrees that "'Bangerz' is the sound of 'Hannah Montana' gone 'Miami Vice' ... It's strange but it's also traditional: Her Disney-steeped voice never takes a back seat to the wide-ranging production (from the likes of Pharrell, and Dr. Luke), and Billy Ray's daughter rocks a country vocal during several tracks."

"Bangerz" is also, for "better or worse," largely from the point of view and sonic perspective that birthed chart-toppers "Wrecking Ball" and "We Can't Stop," Billboard observes. While that may bode well for her sales success, it causes the record to falter in places.

"In other words, the album finds Cyrus working with who she wants to work with, singing about what she wants to sing about, as if she's a kid in an arcade with a pocket of limitless quarters," Billboard says. "Sometimes, the 20-year-old's vision needs to be adjusted."

But that sense of freedom and strong-willed independence is what sets this disc apart from Cyrus albums of the past.

"'Bangerz,'(is) ... her first (album) as the master of her own destiny and — with the two lead singles already landing at No. 2 and No. 1 — a pacesetter in music," Entertainment Weekly says in its review, which awarded "Bangerz" an A-. "It's also utterly fresh, a pop blitz from a hip-hop blueprint, and proof that Miley won't settle for just shocking us."

Have you taken a listen to "Bangerz"? If so, what'd you think?

It was just bad. Most tracks, including Wrecking Ball, sound as if she's screaming above a pop-electro orchestration. Just bad.

She is talented but I am against her unclothing herself to the public. I hope she goes back to being Hanna Montanna. Getting nude at her age on public is like pointing a gun in your head. Physically and spiritually.

I love it – really catchy tunes that are different from the other pop girlz music popular today that all kinda sound the same ie. Katy Perry, Rihanna, Taylor Swift etc. Unique. All the songs are good. She's really talented!

Who cares? She's degraded herself into a porn entertainer. She is attracting trash.

Bangerz. Not terribly clever, it's just what someone in the room said to JZ before he did just that. Wonder if she remembers.

To the person using all caps and showing off their lack of education:
Look, it is obvious many don't care for the new Miley, still others do, but what is YOUR problem? You are acting just like what you have been accusing her of the last 8 hours on this comment section. Are you really just a groupie stalker? You do seem to have a lot of energy over this and her. In fact, you seem to be emulating her. Look that up if your education fails you, which also shows through in your poor use of the English language.

Ahh... another one of Miley's groupies. Thanks, but save it for when you go to Miley's concert. Is that something all Miley groupies do?

I used to watch Hannah Montana when it was on television. Miley was my idol back then. I absolutely adored her and her music and now it makes me sick just looking at her. She used to be so beautiful...what happened?

This album is a coming out album, for a 20 yr old this is a massive album. Miley will now take over the pop charts!

Not sure if I'll buy it , but the two hits are quite good. I can separate her 'immaturity' from her talent. (P.s. she should apologize to Sinead and show she is maturing and can acknowledge her mistakes.)
