Billy Ray Cyrus speaks on Miley's twerked-out show

Billy Ray Cyrus doesn't care how hard his daughter twerks, she'll always be his little Smiley.

The country star said as much in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight," telling the show's Nancy O'Dell that he'll "Of course I'll always be here for Miley."

Adding that he "can't wait to see her when she gets home," Billy Ray said that his relationship with his 20-year-old daughter is intact after the storm of criticism she inspired at Sunday's MTV VMAs.

"She's still my little girl and I'm still her Dad regardless how this circus we call show business plays out," he said. "I love her unconditionally and that will never change."

That evening's big winner, Justin Timberlake, hasn't lost any love for his fellow pop star. "She's young ... It's not like it was the Grammys," he said in Miley's defense while chatting with Hot 97's Angie Martinez.

"I was not in the crowd because it was close to my performance," Timberlake said. "I don't look at Miley that way, because the first time I met her she was 'Hannah Montana.' My thoughts on it are, it's the VMAs. We're talking about Madonna in a wedding dress humping the stage, we're talking about Britney doing a striptease. This cycle is not uncommon. ... It's almost like if something like that doesn't happen at the VMAs, then I feel like it was boring."

Gotta say, Justin ... we agree.

Miley's always been my #1 idol, and always will be. I don't care if she decides to go YOLO out of no where. As crazy as she might look and sound i'll always luv her. I'm not saying that her "we can't stop" video is perfect but at least she can express her feelings without regreting what she did or being embarest about it. Hannah Montana will be (X) in my heart but for now I luv ya Miley!!!!

She's a freak show. I felt I needed a shower after watching her for about 3 minutes. I can't think of one good thing to say about her. The best thing she can do for herself is to disappear...... move to Canada and try to get a job and please never return to the US. She's trash, plain and simple.

A 52 year old father defends his 20 year old daughter stroking the groin of a 36 year old man on stage, there is a serious breakdown in parental guidance in Miley's life and in this world.

What a sad, sad situation. This girl is screaming for guidance and all she gets is a bunch of high fives from older losers. They are a pathetic example of bad role models.

I was with MTV from the beginning. I used to only watch that channel in my teens. They have really blown it. MTV used top stand for "music tv" now it stands for "master**tion tv"–but they dont care if they lost an former fan-okay. I am with the crowd that will permanently skip that channel. Let me know when you decide to go back to music and lay off the soft port/kiddie porn. I dont care if she is 20, she still (like Bieber) looks 14.

No, actually his bad grammar has nothing at all to do with parenting. He is commenting in a discussion forum and hat's the best he could do. I understood what he said just fine. He's not up for a Pulitzer.

..." Bottom line: learn to read and write before commenting on others' parenting skills."

Um, no. He doesn't actually have to do that, even though your OCD is off the charts and you think he is a lesser person than you for having not so perfect grammar. News flash: No one cares. Except you of course, you flash that Spelling Bee ribbon around proudly huh? No one cares. I rather have discussions related to an article with bad grammar than someone like you judging and throwing out rules that no one is going to follow. His post contributed something. Your's did not. Miley is negrified. Sistas been doing this for years with only the odd condemnation about the debasement of culture. But it was isolated to the negra community. Miley's sin is she's the cute little Disney girl migrating negra culture into mainstream America. It was one thing on rap videos good society chose to ignore. Now it's everywhere.

Let us all be honest here; we are all verbally disgusted by Miss Cyrus' performance at the VMAs this year. No matter how much people will say that I'm just a hater, the fact will never change: Its degrading, its scarring, its hurting, and its just plain stupid. The person of today would say, "Yeah, you go Miley! Do whatever you want, no one is going to stop you! F*** all the haters!." That's just because they have no sense of self preservation; no sense in self sanctification.

This generation is lost. If you, reader, think otherwise, then that's too bad. Your loss. You can't change the truth.

Haters? What does any of this have to do with hate? It is obvious that people are plainly disgusted with her behavior.
Just because you, disagree with everyone else, does not make them haters. You are either rationalizing, or you are ignorant.

It is true, her father should be ashamed of her behavior, if he thinks her display had to do with talent, then that is worse, since she has no talent.
It actually proves he was a disgrace as a parent. I am glad my parents had dignity, and taught me to respect myself. These performers to to far, and we know it is go gain more publicity, and that makes them more money. But I would like to say to them, there are some things money should never buy.

What's violent in Tooter post? His mind went quickly to burning crosses!!! Why? What in Neutral statement has to do with burning crosses? Why is it that when we point out the double standards many of the blacks want (of course, only when it's convenient for them), we are reminded and forced to feel guilty for what our ancestors did?
Where was the prude reaction for twenty something years since Beyonce shoves her thrusting, promiscuous moves on our throats? Where was the outrage when she took her moves to entertain Cuba's president?
It is too late now to educate Miley, my kids, others' kids – they grew up to see that a woman can make millions and be well respected by appearing in underwear on stage and twerk as much as she wants. If this is not double standards then what is? The only cross I see now is what happens to Miley for doing what she saw others doing, and taking it a small step forward as any new generation.

Saying that it's OK she danced like that implies that what she did was acceptable. It was by far, not morally acceptable, to dance like that in public. Yea, she could do dance however she wants. It's America and yes it's the VMAs, but you better be ready for the consequences because acting young doesn't mean right. In fact, it usually means stupid.

Also "we can't stop" sold 2 million records, was #1 in 24 countries, holds the record for the most views in 1 day & the fastest to 100 million views. Also "Wrecking Ball" was #1 on iTunes too. The concept of preforming at the VMA'S is to make a lasting impression the performance everyone's talking about & she's done it. The more the media spins this the more successful it was. Not saying it was a good performance but she was obviously aiming for shock value & achieved it. Twerk was even added to the Oxford dictionary after her performance.

Excellent point. The women's liberation movement lamented the objectification of women as $ex objects, bodies to be consumed and discarded. Then rap culture arrived and entrenched that objectification, but only in that community. Now it's migrating to mainstream. How can women say on the one hand, "Respect me as a person" and then on the other hand gyrate their buttocks and say, "You know you want this bootilicious..." It's counterintuitive, one way or the other. Big setback for womanhood, big degradation. You're making it hard on us, Miley.

Whatever happened to acting like a lady? Miley isn't the only one, either. Can you remember anyone before Madonna doing it? Didn't she kind of pioneer this behavior? Then you got Beyonce, Gaga, Rhianna, and others. Their behavior does rub off on their fans, too. How would you like watching your little girl, show you the new dance she just learned from one of her friends? Miley still has a young fan base. She is not setting a very good example. I don't want to see a future generation of pole dancers, because their heroes do it.

Good for you Billy! As a parent I would love my child unconditionally. Whatever I feel about her performance would be addressed in private. I am quite sure he wanted to crawl into the biggest hole once he saw her but she is still his daughter and by no means would he love her any less, much less join the rest of the world in critizing her in public! No parent should do that! If you read the article and comprehend it, you can see he did not say it was outstanding, just that he will stand by his daughter.

As far as her performance, it was awful. Not because she twerked, but because she looked horrible doing it. I have nothing against twerking and dance how ever you do it. Now a days there are lots of different dances which I feel are all beautiful when done correctly. The problem with this one was that she downgraded herself because it was horrendous. Unfortunately, though she can sing she cant dance and basically that pretty much tore her up. She does not have a bodacious body and she wore an outfit and let the whole world know she does not have a bodacious body and that also tore her up.

Bottomline, if it were Beyonce, Rihanna and/or JLo doing – we would not be having this conversation!

Miley Cyrus is 20 years old and a legal adult who is not living in her father's home. Therefore, Billy has no legal control over her. As a parent, he probably feels he has to defend his daughter in public, and the best he can do in this case is to claim his unconditional love. I wonder how he really felt watching that performance, and I wonder what Miley's mother and siblings thought. My guess is that Miley herself didn't give it any thought. For her it was just par for the course, and that's the saddest thing about this performance.

    ok – here's my take –
I'm not a prude by ANY means – I have done things that (being a mature adult and parent) would never divulge to my children until they are at least 18 years old, married, etc.
I think this girl has NO talent whatsoever and the way she acted in this venue is pretty pathetic –
I think her parents should have been a bit more involved in her upbringing and, ok, in a perfect world she would have asked for their opinions on what she wanted to present to the public.
If they had said Gee hun, that sounds great, then they should have been smacked in the head a few times.
Sadly bad publicity IS publicity and all of these so called stars benefit from it.
My children who are 16 and 13 laughed out loud at her performance, were slightly confused by it (as was I and I have had my share of "trips" in my youth...)
They realize she has no talent
Lady Gaga (whom they (nor myself) can't figure out as well) and others like Madona, etc at least have SOME sort of singing ability and as always, through the years flambouyant artists have made millions.
I do think that this girl needs guidance – her managers seem to think that this shock factor MINUS the talent is the way to go.
I don't think so and it seems we'll have another "star" having a breakdown at 25 years old, when if the proper guidance was given, there wouldn't be a breakdown/substance abuse issue, etc to deal with at all –
I mean really – most of us normal everyday shmoes have enough crap to deal with and it makes it tough to be sympathetic when these kids loose sight of realtiy so early in life.....

I agree, though I do think Billy tried for as long as he could to guide her. Hannah Montana was airing for quite some time. She is 20 years, there is only so much he can do. I highly doubt the way Miley has been behaving since her Hannah Montana days, that she has asked her dad what he thought of what she was about to do. That would go completely against what she wants to do which is life her life the way she wants not the way he would like her too.

As I said in my earlier post, had this been Beyonce, Rihanna, JLo or any star with far more talent than her in both singing, dancing and lets be real having a more bodacious body, we would probably be saying how awesome it turned out.

As much as I didnt understand the whole teddy bear thing – her ugliness and terrible dancing ability took away from whatever was going on in the background.

I know publicity is publicity no matter how you put it – but I do not think that she would have purposely put herself out there if she had really seen how horrendous she looked twerking and how appauling her outfit looked on her. I think her managers who whoever choreographed and dressed her should be fired!

Thicke's wife watched many of the rehearsals, and she said she didn't see anything wrong with it. If you have watched the Blurred Lines video, you will realize that Thicke has WAY prettier women rubbing on him on a daily basis, I doubt he was thinking anything except getting his performance correct. • So tired of this

1 The picture of Will Smith and his family was not even a picture of them watching Miley it was of them watching Gaga and it was taken midmotion. Several news organizations have already shown this.
2 Children should not be watching the VMA's that is why they are not on at 7 or 8 like the Grammy's but start at 9.
3 Her performance was not any worse then anything else that has been on the VMA's
4 The performance is the same thing as her Video for the song, Robin's video, but she was fully clothed and in his video they are naked, and the you tube videos of her "twerking" that everyone is all into and talking about and love. Did no one notice that all any talked about before the show was if she was going to do it or not?
5 She stole the show and got everyone talking about her new "album" Mission accomplished for her
6 Why is it so bad that she was fully covered but danced but Gaga walks around practically naked with a string shell bikini on and it was OK because she was Gaga? Kids can watch this but not Miley dance? I liked both performances myself but don't see that Mileys was any worse then hers.

There has to be some standards when performing in public, as it is exposed to the young generation.
Young people have the tendency of imitating their favorite stars, and I don't think you will want your young children behaving like that in public. Certain things should be for adult viewing only. Just like bullying among the young which was always there, but now with UFC and young people watching that, the bullying with beatings has got worse. Some people wont agree with me, but hey the human mind does mysterious things.

Is the world getting better? Not really. Maybe us losers are hoping for something different. Maybe we want to see some decency and respect from
Celebs that get attention. We aren't suddenly finding this unacceptable. We are suddenly getting more and more bored and tired of people pushing the limits of decency.

James I think Sarah meant by losers the hypocrites, who applauded other singers that made the same moves like her, and appeared in underwear on stage.

The only DISTURBING FACTOR in this whole campaign is the viciousness with which she is singled out for some things the others did and were appreciated.

There should be some parental guidance.. He has been in show business a long long time..
I am sure he knows where this kind of thing can lead her..It seems he would not want her to sell her talent so cheaply.
She is rich and famous already.. The desperation of doing this, is more about attention.. Not about desperately trying to gain a career.
She needs a father who acts like one.. And I have yet to find a "father" who would approve of having his little girl do this in front of the world.

Well, Justin Timberlake did the " in a Box", Michael Jackson kept touching his crotch on the stage, others make all kinds of promiscuous moves while singing. I haven't see any serious complain. And than this avalanche of reactions to her performance. Why? Do I like these moves? No. But why this random and exaggerated reaction? I never actually liked her music, but I am on her side. As a human being and as a mother. And I know several people who don't agree with this style in general (we've seen it before), but we're disgusted this circus; by society's suddenly finding their sense of right and wrong and attacking such a young one.

  135. Double Standards for Rihanna and Beyonce

I'am sick and tired of the whining parents who try to held her prisoner to the Hannah Montana./Disney image their kids had of her. She has a right to live her life and express herself as she pleases. This is VMA people! Young kids should not watch it!!

And I'm sick of double standards. If she had meat shaking on her while dancing and her name was Beyonce, just because her hood culture accepts and loooves her it would have been ok. But because she is white and skinny, And the Smith family had their jaws drooping to the floor, it is not ok.

I found the twerking disgusting all these years, when bigger singers like Rihanna and Beyonce, would show up in glittery underwear, with an utter lack of class, among other singers' elegant tuxedos and gowns. I wouldn't have liked Miley's dance, but I would have find her moves a bit less disgusting because her body is toned and elegant. But I am downright supporting her because of all the circus people created, especially the blacks I've heard in the entertaining industry, who were so vocal about it!!!

"But because she is white and skinny, And the Smith family had their jaws drooping to the floor, it is not ok."

You obviously have something against black people, but that is besides the point. The pics of Will Smith and his family were not taken during Miley's erotic strip show, it was during Lady Gaga's performance. By now, everyone knew that. Let me guess, you are going to say something about Trayvon Martin and Obama in your reply? Yeah, yeah, yeah, we are the victims now and all black people are the racists. The world is coming to an end, wah wah wah!

The Blacks. Who are the Blacks? A family of four in middle America? What a piece of work. Only Blacks criticized her performance? You're kidding right? FYI, the Smiths were not making those expressions during Miley's disgusting performance. It's already been clarified that their picture is during Gaga's performance. People are criticizing Miley because she looked desperate, cheap, amateurish and downright pitiful. It's not that she has no talent. It's that she's so screwed up that she's wasting her talent. Please give me and the Blacks a break.

Good for you, Billy Ray. A good parent should love his child unconditionally, even when they do stupid, immature things. Criticism and disapointment at their behavior should be kept private, while making it clear that even though you may not like what they did, you won't stop loving them.

A lot of people do stupid things when they are trying to find their way from childhood to the adult world. Unfortunately for Miley, hers will follow her because she is so well known.

You're upset that she essentially objectified herself through the dancing, but have no problem objectifying her yourself, and calling her "nothing but a trash for cash porn queen" or a "disgusting tramp"? Surely you realize that devaluing anyone this way is as big a problem as the performance is? That is, if we're talking about the downfall of morality?
