Could Josh Brolin or Ryan Gosling play Batman?

Now that we know Warner Bros. is going to unite Superman and Batman on the big screen, the only question is who will play the Caped Crusader.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the potential casting list includes Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, "True Blood's" Joe Manganiello and Brit actor Richard Armitage.

At Comic-Con last month, Warner Bros. blew fans' minds with the announcement that the two heroes are going to be in a feature film together for the first time.

Zack Snyder, who directed this summer's "Man of Steel" and is helming the forthcoming sequel, "strongly hinted" at the Comic-Con panel that Superman and Batman will be rivals in this installment.

"It's beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest superheroes in the world," he said.

THR cautions that the script isn't finished yet and that Snyder is only beginning to look at his options for who could portray Bruce Wayne/Batman. It seems that in the "Man of Steel" sequel, Batman will be "established, rugged" and somewhere in the late 30s to early 40s range. Tonally, the sequel's creative team is said to be looking toward Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns."

In addition to Brolin, Gosling, Manganiello and Armitage, actors Max Martini and Matthew Goode are also said to be under consideration. Keep in mind that a Warner Bros. source downplayed the casting gossip as premature.

That should change soon enough, however, considering that the studio wants to begin filming "Man of Steel 2" in 2014 to keep it on track for a 2015 release. Brit star Henry Cavill is returning to reprise his role as Clark Kent, along with his other "Man of Steel" co-stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne.

Josh Brolin just looks the part for a gritty, older and experienced batman. His hulking and intimidating appearance almost mirrors that of any male character from a Frank miller graphic novel. I would Prefer to reserve Ryan Gosling for the role of the flash, that is if they ever intend to do a Justice League film.

I agree with your points about Brolin, particularly if they were going after the Frank Miller angle for an older, experienced Batman. But, if they're doing this as a platform for a Justice League movie, and eventual reboot of the Batman franchise, is a pushing-50 Batman really the route they want to go? Consider that most of the other actors/characters in the Justice League movie would likely be in their 30s, then you've got this old geezer in a bat suit. Just doesn't make sense in my opinion.

If I may be so bold, the only actor who can truly portray Batman/Bruce Wayne with any degree of authenticity is Adam West.

unfortunately Adam West who's in his 80's is way too old and out of shape to play Batman.. I met him at the comic con here in Niagara Falls a month ago very friendly guy walked slowly and feebly in a cane and I had a chance to speak to him for a few moments and shook his hand.. told him it was my lifelong dream to meet him and he humbly thanked me very much 🙂

My problem has never been with the characters who played Batman, especially in this instance because Josh Brolin & Ryan Goslin are superb actors who should have won Oscars or academy awards long ago!! My problem has been with the female characters, Hollywood needs to take extra time to pick and write the female character better. Right now all the superhero "damsel in distress" actresses have been potrayed poorly.

I think that Brolin is an excellent choice to play Batman. He has already proven he can handle the Bruce Wayne style character when he played Bretton James in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps." He is also very good at playing dark, brooding characters. Furthermore, Brolin is known for his ability to work with other actors to build the movie. He doesn't overpower other actors or try to upstage the others in the cast. Brolin would be a fantastic choice, with his rugged good looks, his charm, and his amazing acting ability.

Brolin is too old, especially in comparison to Cavill as Superman. They need to cast an actor in his 30s to play Bruce Wayne/Batman. Gosling would be ok, as would that Jensen Ackles guy from Supernatural; I've seen him mentioned as a contender, but for some reason he's not on the short list mentioned here. I don't really know any of the other actors listed.

Jensen Ackles? I absolutely love that guy, don't get me wrong, but I don't know how this Batman thing is gonna work with the whole Dark Knight trilogy timeline so I'm skeptical. His comedic timing is flawless, but I don't think that's the tone they are going for.

Ackles would be AWESOME! And the Nolan universe is thrown out so the timeline wouldn't be any problem. I love how his Dean character is already brooding so his batman and bruce wayne would be amazing. Casting an older guy like Brolin makes no sense. If they are following in the vein of Miller's graphic novels then you would HAVE to have a Batman already established in this continuity AND Bats and supes would alreadyhave to know each other. I hate that they are not giving Batman his own movie first.
