Overheard: Is Johnny Depp ready to retire? After appearing in more than 50 films, Johnny Depp is thinking about the end - of his acting career, that is. The 50-year-old star mentioned as much to Rolling Stone earlier this year, and more recently admitted to the BBC that there comes a time when one starts mulling ways to quiet down and get more balance.
"When you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year, for example, and you realize that you've said written words more than you've actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking about that as kind of an insane option for a human being," Depp said. After all, the actor who's been a heartthrob for generations is officially "over the hill." "I'm kicking 50 right up the a**," he told Rolling Stone in June, ahead of his latest release, "The Lone Ranger." "I can't say that I'd want to be doing this for another 10 years. ... At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realize that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive." While "thoughts of retirement" may "pop up every day," Depp isn't divorcing the screen just yet. Aside from the disappointing "Lone Ranger," the actor has at least three other projects up in the air, including a fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. "Are there quieter things that I wouldn't mind doing? Yeah," Depp told the BBC. "I wouldn't say that I'm dropping out any second, but I would say that's probably not too far away." |

Has anyone noticed that the comments in the entertainment section, particularly this page and Gaga's page, contain more intelligent dialogue than most of the "actual" news pages? I wonder...
like that was done a year ago....doc no nooks Nellie.

come home.
just stepped up a knotch in rating.
He better not retire!
come home soon!
I have always like this man, always enjoyed his work. And being his work is in fact now work, he is probably right about his time to start living. I went and saw his last movie , and I loved it, why? Cause he is a good actor, he makes me laugh and I just enjoy him. I just wish I could retire and have the chance to be able to do, what ever I wanted to do. But he has made his money now, go spend and enjoy and live
Good for him if that makes him happy. He'll be missed but one's sanity & happiness with life trumps making more $ in my book. He has enough to live happily ever after persuing whatever it is that grows his soul.
We need to work on Depp ....he has some paranoid, confidence issues and finds excuses too hate her....she will never hate him no matter what he does too her.
What?! Retarded much?
why would I do that if I want his pants. stupid
Hey J, you're great, but distance yourself from Burton. His films are completely unwatchable. That Tonto thing was appallingly bad. Depp as Tonto. Really? When does common sense apply?
It's not about dropping out, its about choosing roles.
i find that childlike and uyou have huge trust issues..we can work on that....with her its going too be less tool.
he's so hot....even when he slows up machines...i would have s-x with him not matter what.
I too was a fan of Depp back in the 90's when Edward Sissorhands came out, but he has been milked and milked until they are just squeezing blood from the udder now. Pirates of the Carribean, Willy Wonka remake, Alice in Wonderland remake, The Lone Ranger – ALL FLOPS! And I must say his performances are getting weaker and more predictable. He needs to take a break and make a comeback in 10 years. Go on holiday – find yourself agian.
I don't think the word Flop means what you think it means. The Pirates movies and Alice In Wonderland are some of the highest grossing films of all time.
I meant critically they were flops and that they were not "Classics". I don't give a sh!t about box office.
Okay, bye! The last moved I was duped to see was the first Pirates of the Caribbean. And it sucked!
I, for one, thought he was great as the IceMan in "Top Gun".
A billion bucks is finally enough? Besides, your last 3 characters have all been the same but in different movies.
YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
Report abuse on the hacker trolls.
time to report abuse on you hacker gripers...
Did you look at the film yet or do i tell him word for word what happened.....
He needs to do one more film, playing Bill Clinton while Scarlett Johannson plays Hillary so the voting masses will line up to elect her after 0bama. Like the pied piper leading mindless waves of rats. That's Hollywood, the dem o crats ministry of pr0paganda, manipulating the bottom half of the bell curve.
You need to lay off the FoxNews, man. You're blithering like a paranoid, right-wing propaganda addled addict. That sh!t is mind poison - just look what it's done to so many senile-old and sub-literate white trash people in our country - it's turned them into Tea Partiers.
Ha! Better he should play Anthony Wiener, and Sarah Jessica Parker can play Huma. And depict them favorably, so he can take over the white house after being New York's next mayor!
And he owns that wildly popular bar in Paris. He could just settle down again in France and manage it. Not a bad gig!
I think he is a really good actor. I was surprised to learn that he had been in so many movies, and which ones. 50 is young to retire, but he's probably got all the cash he needs to survive. Go and enjoy life. If you get bored, you can always come back to acting. Heck, we should all be so lucky to retire at 50, with no worries in the world. I could handle that.
Retire already!....Good for him!!!!
Drop is still alive?
Who knew?
Johnny is the best and should make some more GOOD movies. He can do whatever he wants anytime he wants
with his talent, his money, and his gorgeousness.
i miss him
Depp has always struck me as one of those would-be-really-handsome-if-not-for type of guys.
In this case it's that "girly mouth" of his that's just too small for his face. Just MY OPINION folks...
A mick jagger mouth wouldn't look good on his face anyway. Actually, he has a young face for a 50 year old
He is still successful and if he wants to slow down, I don't see why not. I was thinking the other day about how many movies he's been in and it really started to blow my mind just how great of a career he's had. He could "retire" for a few years and then go back to acting when he's feeling bored again. 50 is pretty young to retire!
What's the deal with the purple lenses? He needs to think about retiring those.
What a deeply intelligent contribution to the discussion. Thank you... Moosefart? Oh, never mind, now I get it; that's the most intelligent you're capable of being.
Its my understanding that he is going blind. He is nearly totally blind in one eye – and the other isn't great...the purple glasses help apparently.
you won't do anything but hang up on her-
Cool. I'm glad he is not retiring yet. He was GREAT in the sitcom "Webster" playing the leading character. Hopefully there will be a remake of this classic series soon.
