Facing cancer, 'Simpsons' co-creator aims to give away fortune

"The Simpsons" co-creator Sam Simon sees "tens of millions" in royalties from the long-running series each year, and he's making it his mission to give nearly all of it away.

Simon, who was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer five months ago, confirmed during a “WTF With Marc Maron” podcast in May that he was initially given three to six months to live.

While he's focused on treatment - "I have great doctors and I plan on beating the cancer!" Simon tweeted July 26 - he's also going all out in his efforts to see his fortune used for good.

“Truth is, I have more money than I’m interested in spending,” Simon the Hollywood Reporter. “Everyone in my family is taken care of and I enjoy this.”

As THR notes, Simon has long dabbled in philanthropy work. His charitable contributions include founding the Malibu-based Sam Simon Foundation, which offers vegan food to the hungry and rescues stray dogs. He also donates to PETA, which named its Norfolk, Virginia, headquarters the "Sam Simon Center.”

The Emmy-winning writer/producer also supports the international nonprofit Save the Children and the Sea Shepard Conservation Society, a global marine conservation organization.

Simon is still working half a day a week consulting for the FX comedy “Anger Management,” and continues his radio show on RadioIO.com.

Jennifer Tilly, one of Simon’s ex-wives, told THR that Simon “really does have a passion to survive, and the longer he’s on the earth, the more good work he can do.”

Sam, I'm an atheist, so I have no "prayers" for you, but thank you for doing what you can to make this planet a better place. We are all going to die someday, some before their time. I wish you all the best in your struggle to overcome a disease that should have seen a cure a long time ago. I wish you well on your journey.

You cannot offer a prayer because you are an atheist ? No, you can't offer prayers because you don't care, you are totally selfish and that selfishness is probably the whole base of being an "atheist" because God is a God who wants good for all mankind .He wants us to love each other, be good and help each other, live in peace with each other, help keep each other on the right path so we don't fall into temptation and sin, thus hurting ourselves and others. God is a God of mercy and grace, and righteousness and righteous judgement, and judgement being tempered with mercy. So if you are an atheist, you do not believe in anything that is of God. You do not believe in any of the above qualities of love, peace, mercy, giving encouragement and hope, charity, mercy or righteous judgement. What good are you to yourself and to others then ? There is no meaning or substance to life if we exist only to ourselves without a meaningful relationship to others and the society we are in. A life without love, hope, joy or peace. A life without righteousness, mercy, compassion, charity, or any grace. What a horrid and lonely existence ! I would never want to be an atheist.

I am very sorry to hear this. I lost my mother to colon cancer and I know you must be going through an impossibly hard time.

If you read this, I want to make a suggestion on your health and on your charity.

Please eat only organic foods as this will at least stop your continued exposure to harmful pesticides and GMOs.

And, please use your charitable donations to support organics and defeat GMOs. Being vegan is not enough. We need to get these toxic chemicals out of our food and fields. It is an issue I have tried to bet PETA to address with no success. If we all go to a vegan diet, but still support heavy pesticide/GMO crops we are still harming countless animals, insects, amphibians, fish and humans. It is really insanity and could be factor in your cancer. My prayers are with you. Thank you for the many entertaining years of the Simpsons.

Dear Sam, I hope and pray that you find peace in your journey. I lost my husband to cancer a year ago and the experience changed me forever. I hope you will consider a plant based diet and oxygen on a daily basis. There are many approaches to dealing with cancer. I pray you find comfort in your quest for wellness. I have always been a person to help others any way I can. I have given in many ways all my life and 4 years ago I donated a kidney. I would do it all over again if given the chance. I am a joyful, happy and blessed soul because of what I have done for others... Giving is joy. I wish I could have help establishing a Great cartooning and animation program at my son's college. Currently, they do not offer an animation program. My 19 year old is very talented and one day hopes to have his own cartoon show. I would like to be able to afford him the opportunity to learn from a master such as yourself... Establishing a program in this small school would be remarkable! Please contact me if this is something you might be interested in creating! He loves your show the Simpson's,, thank u for your consideration.

PETA .... no, please do your research. They do not love animals, they want them gone ... if you really want to help, go to local animal shelter and make your donations directly. Most of PETAs never goes to animals, it goes to lobbying, and killing animals. Note that the vast majority of animals given to PETA to shelter never made it even 10 minutes in their care. See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/nathan-j-winograd/peta-kills-puppies-kittens_b_2979220.html

I agree totally Lynda! PETA has some very strange ideas, that don't really fit w/ those who love animals. For example, the fighting dogs of Michael Vick: the Humane Society and PETA both wanted them all euthanized. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, stepped in, got the court to give them as many of the dogs (all pit bulls) as possible. They rehabbed many, and found good homes for those who were rehabbed. Those who could not live in a regular home, lived out their lives at Best Friends ranch. They don't euthanize any animals, they work w/ the animals that are feral, stray, dumped, or whatever and try to find homes for them, that includes cats, horses, donkeys, birds of all kinds, etc. There are several books out about them, and several National Geographic DVD's I urge you or anyone interested to watch.
      THEY do good work.

Unlike the PETA top admistrator who was quoted as saying as regards pure blooded dogs: "one generation and gone".....how dare he "decide" what animals should live or die? PETA is very popular among the younger groups and I hope its not a sign of the future that things will be shifting in their direction and point of view.

I totally agree with you Lynda! PETA's mission is NO pets of any kind. They regularly euthanize their "rescues". Those people are evil! I hope he will reconsider his donations.

legislation and lobbying is the only way to protect anything. That is where animal protection laws come from. You can not have it both ways. if you put all the resources into a local no kill shelter 10s maybe hundreds of animals will get to live out there lives. You create or strengthen animal protection laws and it could help 10s of thousands if not millions.

I know you said you would like to help others and if you do read this and help my family we would be forever greatful. It might not seem like much but we are $10,000 in debt in medical bills. We did not have any insurance until April 2013. He has papilledema and IIH (intracranial hypertension). It has been a long and rough seven months for Carter. he is only 14. Thank you and my god bless you.

Sam, I am so sorry. Cancer is so unfair and such a cruel disease, I have lost close family members to it. You are a strong and good-hearted person, and if anyone can beat it, you can! You have done such amazing work and shared your brilliance with so many. However you eventually pass, your work and your legacy will continue on and become a part of history. Your family must be so proud of you!

It would be refreshing to see someone give away at least some of their millions directly, not all to huge charities that often spend much of it on keeping their overpaid executives well spoiled. Heck, I am a struggling single mom who works full time and gets no state aid of any kind. I could sure use some!

So very sorry not to have known you before this, personally I mean. Wouldn't it be a wonderful gesture if each person who commented here simply got just $100K – even $50K, oh hell, I'm not greedy $25K. I'm 60 years young and have spent my whole life trying to understand why my parents drank and one night when I was 4 years old simply dropped my sister and I off at our grandparents to live until my sister ran away at 15 and I left the day I turned 18. Our grandparents where so very mean, hurtful and abusive to us – both in different ways. It would be absolutely wonderful to receive such a wonderful gift from Mr. Simon. You know they called me "Sam" in high school. Just putting it out there plain and simple like. C'mon folks, tell me you weren't thinking about it, I actually had the 'kahunas' to put it out there because it would be an absolute life changer for me. With any luck, Sam Simon, you will answer my prayer.

first of all sam thank you for all you have done and continue to do. im glad to read first of all you have set up your family. its hard to say what should be done with millions of dollars in the long term, most of us will never have that problem lol. but you are thinking ahead so that i applaud. if i were to ever come into money i know what i would do even if i wasnt told i had only a few months to live, i would hire a team of common people to read letters and determine who should be chosen to get some funds. not like a contest but for ppl honestly in need. like losing a home or something. not to buy a boat or car but enuf to make a life change and for the better. then have the chosen ones investigated to make sure its not a scam and then a check. i always said i would do this if i ever got rich along with running a farm of about 100 acres fenced in for homeless animals. thats a dream but hey someone has to win a lottery right. but in the mean time hang in there and i hope the doctors are wrong in time you have left. you never know. take care and im sure theres a spot in heaven waiting whenever the time is there.

I was sympathetic to this man's condition untill I read how he plans to squander, waste, flush his wealth down the toilet leaving nothing of value to anyone with the possible exception of his family members. Philanthropy is NOT feeding carrots to the homeless; the poor just can't get enough veggies, save stray dogs? God knows we could use more of those. Money for PETA? Sure, fund those who won't work as long as there are suckers around to give them the money they themselves have worked for. I am all for marine conservation; I am a diver but don't see how sailing around bashing into legally operating vessels is conserving anything but their own cushy non- jobs
Ever hear of causes real people care about? How about education for those who could benefit from your money? How about donating to a children' hospital? How about supporting the families of those kids who are hospitalizwd for months or years? How about funding research into diabetes? The list is endless but this guy donates to Malibu " charities". What a breathtaking waste
When I was diagnosed with cancer, I taught my kids to change the oil in the lawnmower and other mundane chores but most important was to take care of their Mom. I donate generously to our local childrens hospital and to cancer research for obvious reasons. Can't afford, and not interested in saving dogs, rats or cows or sharks ( those things scare the heck outa me) but then, I don't have millions to pee down a worthless hole
What a waste where so much good was possible. I'm sure the homeless will raise some lettuce in salute and the dogs will miss him

And while I don't agree feeding the homeless vegetables is the best choice for a charity I'm sure they have a point and have other redeeming qualities. To slam the man who didn't even write the article, who probably has no idea this article is in existence is very judgmental. Clearly, this man has made various comments about this and one person decided to create a story around it. Not news and not reliable. That's the person that should be ridiculed.

Not to blame Sam at all, but this needs to be said. A timely colonoscopy could have prevented this cancer, and everyone with a colon should take advantage of this safe and relatively innocuous procedure. It is one of the three cancer screenings that have been proven to increase longevity, and since the other two are PAP smears and mammograms this is the only one that will help men live longer. If you are over 50, or African-American and over 45, call your doctor and arrange this test. If you have insurance, Obamacare does not allow copayments for routine screening so it may not even incur any cost. No one needs to die from colon cancer; just do it.

Hang in there Sam. I 'm sorry you have gotten sick from such a nasty disease.
I was diagnosed 20 months ago with stage 4 Adenocarcinoma that metastised to my kidneys and glands, and given 6 to 18 months on my prognosis. After going through chemo and radiation the tumors have doubled to twice the size, and pain is a everyday thing, but I am not giving up, and hope you do the same
I would say fight the s#it, but I still don't know how one does that, but I do know you have it in you to to make everyday count, and enjoy life to the fullest. Thanks for all the laughs.

There have been many reports of people self-medicating with cannabis oil and seeing cancerous tumors decrease in size or even disappear. These effects are starting to be reported in the academic literature as well in mice. Please consider this information. Best of luck to you.

This may sound crazy but research auto-urine therapy. Can't hurt.

It would be nice if someone that has had a hard go of it was blessed by someone generous, to start over and given a chance to start a business or invest the money to keep the blessing of giving going.

Good for you!! Sam Simon will have a special place in Heaven for his kindness.
