Robin Thicke explains his 'Blurred Lines'

Robin Thicke is clearing up the hazy meaning behind his summer jam, "Blurred Lines."

The R&B singer has been criticized for crooning "rapey" lyrics, as the single includes phrases like, "I hate these blurred lines/I know you want it ... But you're a good girl/the way you grab me/Must wanna get nasty."

Yet Thicke tells the BBC that he was going for female empowerment rather than sleaze.

"I can't dignify that with a response," Thicke said of his critics. "That's ridiculous ... For me, it was about blurring the lines between men and women, and how much we're the same. My wife is as strong as I am, if not smarter and stronger. And she's an animal too, and she doesn't need a man to define her. The song is really about women are everything that a man is, and can do anything a man can do."

His wife, actress Paula Patton, was also an inspiration behind the racy music video for "Blurred Lines," which was pulled from YouTube for featuring a bevy of models wearing nothing but flesh-colored thongs.

"It was actually the director's idea, Diane Martel," Thicke said. "I had mentioned to her that I wanted to do a very funny and silly video. ... And she said, 'well, what if we have the girls take their clothes off?' And I said, 'let's make sure we shoot two versions, because I don't want it to be sleazy.' I've always been a gentleman, I've been in love with the same woman since I was a teenager. I don't want to do anything that's inappropriate."

While Thicke said that he was more partial to the clothed version, his spouse encouraged him to go with something more risque. "I showed [the naked version] to my wife and all my girlfriends, and they said, 'You have to put this out, this is so sexy and so cool.'"

Of course, there is another side to the "Blurred Lines" coin, "which is, the blurred lines between a good girl and a bad girl," he said. "Even very good girls have a little bad side to them, you just have to know how to pull it out of them."

The song IS Blurred! It has a wonderful catchy tune, real good for line dancing, but for family n healthy enjoyment needs to be played instrumental because the video and the thought behind the words are questionable. This could have been the right video to last a decade, if not more...just clean up the words more Robin Thicke. I like the music and catchy "Blurred Lines...." Chorus.

I like this song, I don't get "rapey" from the lyrics. I didn't see the video and don't think I'd like to. But the song is alright. America goes crazy about the wrong things.

M.A.P, where are you getting your lyrics for this song? No where in there could I find the term "she beg for more". In fact, the only time "beg" comes up is part of the word "Beginning". Nor can I find the lyrics "get on her". If we are inventing song lyrics for this song, then yes whatever you invent may fit your world view. However, the reality is, the lines you are quoting are not even present in the song.

I saw him sing this song on America's Got Talent and wow what a horrible performance. He cannot sing! This song is god awful! Who gave him a recording contract? They ought to be punished for torturing the ears of the American public!

I agree, Liz. Robin Thicke has absolutely no talent and no voice and made a racy video to get attention, because obviously his "music" couldn't get attention on it's own merit. He's a Justin Timberlake wannabe who managed to get famous because of his famous father. He must be thrilled to get attention, because ANY publicity is better than none. I don't remember reading ANYTHING about how great his music and his performance was, where as Justin Timberlake really DOES have talent.

I only clicked onto this article because of a link to "Robin Thicke explains his Blurred Lines," and this article's accusations are beyond absurd. If anything, this song is the TOTAL OPPOSITE of anything "rapey" – I can't even believe such a word was even used! I've never even known any other songs by him and it's not like I'm a big fan, but I despise trash talking if it's not deserved. This song is about how EVEN THOUGH he wants her, and knows she wants him too, he would NEVER force her into anything and instead acknowledges the girl's perception of herself as a "good girl" and the contradiction she has for herself with this and her desire for him, hence creating the "blurred lines" of not knowing if he should pursue her romantically, because he would NOT want to make her uncomfortable. Completely the opposite of any bad intentions! Good grief, I'm disgusted with the accusations in this article.

People are just way to uptight. It is a song and a great song at that. It is not promoting rape and people really need to chill out about making a controversy about every little thing. It is beyond ridiculous now.

They never called it "rapey"; they said that he has been CRITICIZED for it. Reread it next time.
