'Grapes of Wrath' movie has Spielberg's interestAnother historical drama has caught the eye of Steven Spielberg. According to reports, the filmmaker and DreamWorks are negotiating with the estate of author John Steinbeck to secure rights to his classic novel "The Grapes of Wrath."
The 1939 book was already adapted for the screen in 1940 by John Ford, whose film earned seven Oscar nominations (of which Ford won one for best director). That edition starred Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, whose poor farming family was forced to leave Oklahoma during the Great Depression for California in hope of a better life. With the 75th anniversary of the novel approaching next year, there's been renewed interest in Steinbeck's story, and Spielberg is reportedly one of many who wanted to nab rights to the project. Yet while the filmmaker is eyeing "The Grapes of Wrath," both Deadline and Entertainment Weekly hear that he wouldn't be in the director's chair for this one. All told, the idea of another "Grapes of Wrath" is at the moment little more than chatter. Locking down the rights for the film is complicated, and Spielberg's rep has cautioned that these are simply "discussions at this point." |

It would be very interesting to create a new filmed version of "The Grapes of Wrath". I would like to see Spielberg use the same dialog, word for word, as in John Ford's brilliant and extraordinary original, but set the film in the present day.
I think it could make a powerful statement about the choices we have made to treat people as if they were simply commodities to be used up and discarded in the pursuit of ever greater profits.

It doesn't matter how much lipstick you wear. You are still a fat ugly hack.
