Captain Planet, our hero, has a movie in the works

Early '90s cartoon "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" is going the way of "The Smurfs" and getting a belated big screen adaptation.

According to reports, Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to obtain rights for a film version of the cheesy animated series that aimed to teach kids about taking care of the environment.

In the cartoon, Captain Planet was an Eco-friendly superhero who could be summoned by five adolescents from around the world. The group of teens were bestowed with magical rings that help them stop polluters, but they called in Captain "The Power is Yours" Planet to help with problems they couldn't handle.

Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford are on board to produce the project, but details on how Sony plans to adapt the cartoon are slim. The general Internet consensus is pretty clear though: Get Don Cheadle in this, or it's not going to work.

Box office battle: 'Heat' vs. 'White House Down'

Two movies are in theaters this weekend starring pairs of extremely likable actors: Roland Emmerich's action flick "White House Down," with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and Paul Feig's female buddy cop comedy "The Heat," with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock.

There's enough time in the stretch between Friday and Monday to fit them both in, but only one can be crowned as the box office winner come Sunday night.
