Catherine Zeta-Jones checks into healthcare facilityActress Catherine Zeta-Jones is being proactive about maintaining good health. The 43-year-old, who has been open about seeking treatment for bipolar II disorder, has checked into a "healthcare facility," her rep told CNN.
"Previously, Catherine has said that she is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner," her rep added. In 2011, Zeta-Jones, who is married to Michael Douglas, sought treatment for the disorder with a brief stay at a mental health facility. Bipolar II, which the Mayo Clinic notes is less severe than bipolar I, is defined as "a pattern of depressive episodes shifting back and forth with hypomanic episodes, but no full-blown manic or mixed episodes," according to the National Institute of Mental Health. CNN Health: What is Bipolar II In the past, Zeta-Jones has said that she hopes her desire to seek help will encourage others who might be suffering. "This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them," she told People magazine in 2011. "If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help." |

I can't tell if I'm a king pin or a pauper
i commend her for it....
amazing
grow up
not anyone else.
she needs to learn some self-discipline, & stop being a drama queen, today everybody is looking for a crutch.,grow -up.
Grow up? That's funny coming form you – sound like you're about 13. And crazy and heartless as a loon to boot.
She has too get the issue resolved.
She's one of those rare artist that can act, sing and dance. I wish her well, that she gets tre he treatment and rest so she can share her talents again.
these pills are only too be taken if you need it...there is nothing embarassing or wrong with it. i do feel the natural way is the best way but if its not working for you then you or whoever needs the assistance. there is nothing wrong or bad about having too take something too help you deal with your issues.
we are all not the same...some can survive without assistance some cannot....it does not mean your low or a loser.do what you have too do too move forward.
I do not have them but do adore them.....however as i have told many troubled couples...someone like this needs help and for the sake OF the kids she needs too take care of it..everything parents do in life is for the kids, happy, sad, separations it is always about what is best for the kids–even when they are 50 years old your parents are always going too worry about their kids....
what she needs is a partner who isnt her fathers age+. Her touch with where she should be in her life is being stymied by grandpa Douglas there. No Offense Michael but what are you doing this this lovely lady
i have seen relationships work with age differences...that is not the issue. the bipolar and the right help is the issue.
I would tend to agree that their extreme age difference is a big issue. If she married him for his fame & money, she has to deal everyday with the stress of whether she should have, what if she was in a better relationship with someone her age who is still hot & can do more things physically, & who she would have more in common. She has had her elderly husband battling a deadly cancer – talk about a wake up that you are not in an equal relationship & you are likely to be a nurse, widowed young, with children missing the old man. This is just reality. I've certainly seen it many times, as have most people. Very stressful indeed & stress triggers mania & depression.
Sometimes you have to use your brain and willpower and toughen up. Everyone takes pills for depression like zanex or whatever. Nothing but a bunch of whimps that disguise their problems with pills that just end up making them worse.
It's a disease, not subject to willpower. It's like telling someone with epilepsy to toughen up and stop writhing around on the floor when they're having a epileptic fit. I think you need better education.
Catherine will have to deal with that aspect of her rants and jealousy on her own.
if she does not follow through on her problem he's going to walk - its life folks deal with it.
First of all, I think it is pretty sad that this woman's privacy has been invaded in this way. Bi-polar disorder is a rough life sentence. I commend her on seeking treatment and the rest of us should just mind our own business. Remember, her husband was/still may be sick with cancer and she's got two young kids to think of. The media's coverage of this is especially insensitive given the nature of her illness. I wish her well.
They wanted each other...simple
a bi polar has a temper already heavy use of vodka only increases the problem...
You said, "a bipolar has a temper".
Sufferers of bipolar disease may or may not have tempers. Behavior depends on the severity of the disease (in general, Bipolar I is more severe than Bipolar II) and other factors that affect temper in people who don't suffer from Bipolar disease.
Or course, heavy use of Vodka will make any disease worse, including mental illness. And your point in the context of Catherine Zeta-Jones is?
I'm sure you know that there are other things besides heavy use of Vodka that can change the severity of a mental illness for the worse. Why pick Vodka out of all those other causes, and report it here?
Selective data mining is one consequence of using JUNK SCIENCE to reach conclusions.
You know, you could make a fortune as a climatologist. The profession is always on the lookout for good junk scientists.
Alcohol use makes both Bipolar II and Bipolar 1 far more severe on account of how it affects the brain chemistry. Worst possible advice ever. Even moderate drinking is a very, very bad idea fior bipolar NOS.
you can ask your bartendar too only put teardrop of vodka in your drink.....its up too you dear not me
Still never understood that old guy was able to marry such a beautiful woman. Kudos to him (pretzels with cheese in the middle)
Yea, vodka would work for that sissy
and they suffer very badly from these issues...that is why they need to get too a facility so they can stop the constant attention crying and figure out why they are so unhappy.
Michael has cancer he has too worry about himself not this one ranting and screaming for attention 24 hours a day.
I wish both of them the best
Another one of those curious, backhanded salutations. "Your wife is a crazy nut, but good luck to both of you."
Where do parents hatch "people" like you and can we get that hatchery shut down?
This is the sign of a rare, remarkable woman. 99% of those that suffer from this are in complete denial and refuse treatment. Recent studies show those who opt out of being treated for this order, over time, suffer premature degeneration of vital organs resulting in reduced lifespan. She will enjoy both a better life and improved health.
Michael hss cancer he has too worry about himself not this one ranting and screaming for attention 24 hours a day.
I wish both of them the best
It wasn't enough that you felt compelled to post this obnoxious post once?
the man is ill and so is she...he has too worry about the cancer spreading...she has the power too help herself mentally
he does not he has to rely on God she can make it but she's been bi polar for years we'll see if she follows through
the only 1 who is alone is the bi polar victim
they are already temper ridden....the vodka could cause more problems..thank you
These are signs of bi polar.
Someone just needs to tell her to straighten up and stop being crazy. Maybe she needs more vodka in her diet.
43??? Hahahahahaha, I bet all her 50 year-old former classmates get a kick out of that.
michael has cancer and does not have the time for catherine's issues–michael has too live.
and his fans love him for it. addictions are a problem.
0 <– the number of s**ts I give.
I feel sad that she got this sickness. But sometimes I wonder !!! Because think about it few years ago she had a Healthy husband and know he got Cancer...and how many people we been tru that my sister got cancer I know how sad that could
Be trust me, for me its a Nervous Breakdown that Doctor want to treat $$$$$$
She will never flush or die.
I commend Ms. Zeta- Jones for being proactive to seek treatment early on in her crisis. Bipolar disorder affects approximately 5.7 million Americans and can be very life altering for some of our most gifted and talented citizens.
Having the insight to the disorder’s progression and recognizing the need to get professional intervention is a good prognostic indicator.
I wish her well in her treatment plan.
I agree; she's tackling problem head-on, which is the best thing to do. I wish them well.
Michael is worth it...if she does not get it together he said even with his cancer he's going too move...
He's sick himself...he has too deal with her jealous drama...puh leaze
and it shows..this facility will help.
but she needs mental help and the bi polar addictions are taking over.
Shes needs decent medicine. Then she will get over her whiney problem:/ and a divorce, god the guy is like a thousand years older than her. No wonder shes being a big cry baby.
Everything that catherine is done has proven she needs the help and we will get it for her.
Best thing for the marriage...send her out for the bi polar issues
That is why its going
What a baby, OH OMG!!! EVERYONE FREAK OUT!!!:/ i know a guy with epilepsy, now thats something to be worried about. God, shes such a cry baby:.(
The marriage is in huge trouble..
i'm happy michael took care of this....she's is very very sick.
Perhaps we should all just let Catherine Zeta-Jones enter the facility without second-guessing her. To those who laugh, you clearly have unresolved issues yourselves.
Gosh....you are so Right. Can't people just be understanding and wish her well? She didn't have to make those comments to help others. She is a real person and is doing what she needs to do. Imagine being famous and having to deal with her condition?
1. does not fix herself up
2. vicious, angry all the time
3. severe depression
4. jealousy (HUGE)
Not me. I'm a colored lady.
there are a higher percentage of whites then black who suffer from bi polar and or addictions...that is why Michael is doing the right thing in send his wife out for awhile...extra stress causes further cancer.
does that mean I'm bi-polar, or caffeine addicted?
Your doing this for you and the kids of course...but this project is for YOU...
Michael has the money to get her the help too send her away–
my wife has also been in a facility for over 6 years now and she still cannot snap out of. Can someone help me also.
my wife has also been in a facility for over 6 years now and she still cannot snap out of. Can someone help me also.
and she has been in a facility for 6 months now...its not helped what do i do....
if he does not help her...the marriage will end.
My wife was diagnosed a few years ago with Bipolar II after many years of being diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Ironically, a new treatment approved for depression, Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), has reduced her Bipolar II symptoms markedly. The treatment is expensive (and is not insurance approved for Bipolar II), but in my opinion, the decision to bear this expense has been a wise and fruitful one for us. It is not a "miracle cure" (patients still need to learn how to manage the triggers for their illness, and occasional "touch up" sessions may be needed) but the treatment has made her (and our) life much better. As with any medical treatment, YMMV.
it's always cheaper to get rid of her and upgrade
Good for you and your wife. Keep hanging in there.
realizing your wife is ill and sending her too a facility was the best thing...i commend you for that.
one never wins in the jealousy world..this is catherine's problem...how can someone compete against her own husband is beyond. me
with michael's help....catherine will get the help she needs
its long over due...she is still young enough to seek help
.
is a huge problem in relationships that's why most go sour
it was time....the marriage is in deep sh-t
you see everyone knows catherine has had issues for years....michael was aware of this yet gave her 2 million chances===now she needs too check in or the marriage will end.
that's how it was figure out Zeta was ill.
and needs to focus on getting better.

Every woman in Zeta-Jones position will go mad. How can a young woman be married to an ugly old man almost 30 years her senior? During a woman's menstruation time, she may feel okay to be in company with an old man who loves her, but after her period, during her ovulation time, she would desire for a mate and not having a suitable man will put every woman in depression. I do not know if Zeta-Jones have one close friend in US; if she had parents in US, she would have long divorced her husband. Zeta-Jones does not know how to get out of her trap; she does not seem to have one good friend to help her out. I hope people who love her will help her get a divorce and start her life. She is too young to just wait for dying. I will pray for her.

No assault rifles for you !! I bet Mike has a closet full of guns. They seem to be in every movie he made. Thanks for your support. Go NRA.
Tom Cruise has things to say about this!
Please respect her privacy!
We encourage everyone to their privacy by having an article on CNN with personal statements about your hidden private problems. Way ta go.
Bipolar II has the highest suicide rate of any mental illness diagnosis. It is an awful affliction. I hope she gets better soon.
I just hope she stops mutilating her gorgeous face. I don't know why some women do this to themselves. They go to some plastic surgeon over and over again and end up looking like an entirely different human being - and NOT a better looking one.
Yea marijuana is safe smoke it up,get lung cancer and support drug dealers from Mexico as they kill each other over the money from it and those mom and pop weed stores they're going to get taken over by drug cartels evidentually and there will be a war over who gets what corner store to sell it,yea marijuana is a great idea !!
MJ is not good at all for folks with bipolar 2. It can cause the condition to worsen into bipolar 1 and also cause a higher risk of developing schizophrenia later in life.
Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy....
As someone who had two family members (both now deceased, one took their own life) who had the disorder, I hope others will also seek treatment. It is the best way to manage it.
Weed would fix her problem.
END THE WAR ON DRUGS. It's just a welfare program for government contractors.
Your life is devoted to a plant. Wake up in the morning and think about how to use your time and energy for... a plant. Awesome.
No, it would make the disorder and periods of hypomanic episodes far worse over time and leading into full blown mania. Bad idea for folks with bipolar 2.
I will say one thing, that is the best looking loon I have ever seen!!
You said about ten things, right after "I will say one thing."
43 years old. THat pic is awesome. She still looks hot. For anyone criticizing her looks or anything I suggest you come back to reality. She is a classy woman who just happens to also be extremely attractive.
it it weird that there are apparently multiple bipolar disorders? even bipolar disorder is bipolar?
Catherine Zeta-Jones is married to Liberace? I thought he was gay and dating Good Will Hunting?
Good one Teddy! I can't wait to see that, I laugh just watching the ads.
A beautiful woman losing her looks to age is one of the most unstable substances in the universe.
It's been proven by physicists.
They look more like father-daughter that husband-wife. Maybe that's why she gets depressed.
We sat in front of them at the Apollo for the Springsteen show. She looked absolutely stunning. Bruce sang part of Waiting on a Sunny day to her standing on the seat in the row behind us.
I hope she recovers and finds the right place. She does need to step away from the BOTOX...such a beautiful woman...
Beautiful, famous and rich.
Who'dathunk?
At least she can afford the best treatment available.
Well that's exactly the point isn't it? It has nothing to do with the external world. The sadness is coming from her brain, discoloring all the lovely things. I may not be her, but I have a lovely husband and child, we aren't struggling financially, I have everything a person could want, but there are periods (the down cycle) where none of this matters. It means nothing, I can't feel happiness. It's like a foreign language that I cannot understand and there is no way to translate.
She is so beautiful. Im not a doctor but I would prescribe a full and relaxing massage.....by me
Marrying someone old enough to be your father will certainly degrade your health. I wouldn't be surprised that she much regrets marrying someone 25 years older.
I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't a psychologist, and if you didn't know what you were talking about. Shame on her for marrying an older man! No wonder she has problems!!
Right? Wrong.
its much worse then just a mood swing-your not a psychologist either–
Michael looks as though he has made a complete recovery from his throat cancer! One of the best actors in the business. I hope that he has plenty of time to pull off a few more good roles in the future!!!
Thank you for speaking out, Catherine.
I've always thought that Catherine Zeta-Jones was one of the most beautiful women i've ever seen. When I saw her marry Michael Douglas, I immediately thought "daddy issues". I couldn' imagine that being married to Douglas has been healthy.
Lucky old guy... just my first thought seeing the picture...
Bipolar ?
It's called MOOD swing.
Not when it has a predictable pattern and goes on for more than 6 months. I suffer from Bipolar II and it's draining and disheartening. You get just enough "happy" time to be aware that another "sad" time is coming very soon. It's like having a scabbed over cut reopened again and again.
It is not a mood swing. Having been married to someone that was bi-polar there are medical & psychological issues that go with it. Being left untreated can become dangerous for the individual and the people around them. Getting this type of issue into the public spotlight is a good thing. This country lags so far behind in mental healthcare it isn't even funny.
You're an idiot.
@Moody,
You said, "Bipolar? It's called MOOD swing."
No it isn't. Psychologist? You aren't.
its depression, attention and the need for control...
Good for you Catherine! You are a great example on the responsiblity of managing a health issue rather than letting it control your life and others.
In reading some of the comments of others, it appears that they need to educate themselves prior to speaking. They might be diagnosed with stupity.
Please, people, don't chime in about something you know nothing about. A bipolar disorder is not a thought disorder/schizophrenia. She is not "crazy' or in "a padded cell", but most probably needs to have her medication adjusted.
This from a retired clinical social worker.
Actually, Bipolar I is most definitely along the spectrum of schizophrenia as it is a true psychotic disorder. The difference b/w Bipolar I and Schizophrenia is that people with BP 1 come back to reality after a manic/psychotic episode, whereas schizophrenics do not. We use the same medications to prevent mania (risperidone, haldol, zyprexa) In Bipolar 1's as we do to treat schizophrenics. It is 100% a thought disorder, but more so a psychotic disorder. True Bipolar disorder is not someone who is just moody. That is more like cyclothymia, which is also considered along the BP spectrum, but not true BP. Bipolar 2 is a disease in which someone who has major depression, but once in a while will have substantial amounts of energy (hypomania), but they never cross the line into psychosis, or true mania.
Source: I am a Physician Assistant who has worked in Maricopa County Court-Ordered Adult Inpatient Unit.
You're not a doctor. A social worker even a retired one should stay out of the business of practicing medicine.
Since I drive by a hospital every day, I am qualified to give her some new "Medicine", lol.
Bipolar disorder is no laughing matter. My sister is bipolar. It's all about staying on your meds. The scary thing is when a person, who is bipolar, is in the manic phase... they feel great and think... why the heck do I need to take meds? I feel great! And therein lies the rub. Bipolar disorder is a chemical in-balance of the brain. The meds help them maintain the balance. If the stop taking their meds or skip a dose here and there, they eventually lose balance and have an episode that requires hospitalization. It's an illness that impacts the entire family. I applaud Zeta-Jones for taking responsibility. I see stars like Lindsey Lohan and Amanda Bynes exhibit some of the same weird behaviors my sister exhibited just before she was diagnosed. I wouldn't be at all surprised if those two are also bipolar.
My best wishesw to all who suffer this condition. I do not have it myself, but I have a few friends (some treated others not) with types I and II. It is a horrible existence. I hope she gets the help she needs and that many more will get help as well with less stigma and easier access.
I wonder if she has to wear a straightjacket sometimes or maybe be in a padded room? I hope not. She is too pretty for that – and too rich. She should just be happy she isn't at work right now like everyone else and straighten up. Maybe go shopping or to the beach and be happy. Not the looooney bin.
Maybe she runs around n-aked alots. That is the good kind of crazy.
It's things like this that prevent people from seeking treatment. The brain is an organ and it is just as capable of being ill as any other organ.
So if she was fat and ugly it would had been better? It doesnt matter what you look like or if you are from the moon when it comes to getting medical help form bipolar or other medical issues. But the high cost of that is out of the reach for most USA folks.
I have an organ that is ill - in fact, it is downright sick. Just yesterday it "threw up" five different times, all over the place. Even the ceiling.
Plus "staying at a mental health facility" usually means locked up in a nut house. That means really crazy. Dang. She is to pretty to be crazy.
I think bipolar means schizophrenic but in a nicer way. That means really really crazy. Like last season on American Horror Story. Bad crazy. Yuck.
American Horror Story is a great show. I really liked Katherine Zeta-Jones in that, when she played the tap-dancing moose. Trippy!
They said it might've about a coven of witches next season. I bet it is gonna be toooooo good. : ). I sure like it and Boardwalk Empire and The Vikings : )
I'm not going to watch AMH season 3 if they cast Michael Douglas as some crazy woman again. I was ok with him playing the psycho nun in flip flops last season (I still get the creeps when I hear someone walking through the mall in flip-flops), but after seeing him play that nutty woman piano player in that new HBO film I'm just getting tired of him.
Thank you for weighing in even though you have no idea what you're talking about.
No it doesn't. The two conditions are unrelated. Also, one is not "nicer" than another. They are mental illnesses and are not "nicer" or "really really crazy". In fact both Bipolar II and Schizophrenia have numerous degrees of severity.
Learn to count higher than two. You may even be able to invent different modifiers than "nicer" and "really really crazy". Who knows, those modifiers might even accurately describe the severity of either disease – though it will be a completely random accuracy, since you don't know anything about psychology.
the other is delusional behavior seeing and believing things are happening when they are not
this is going also....justin's marriage is great, lachey's girl is amazing...yea
She has such a weird last name - Jones.
Sarah Palin needs to seek treatment for her disorder... stupidity.
There might be a cure for jealousy also. You should seek treatment.
