Willie Nelson turns show into benefit for West

The recent fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas hit Willie Nelson close to home.

The legendary singer/songwriter hails from Abbott, Texas, not far from West in the central part of the state.

West, a small town with a population of 2,800, is still reeling from Wednesday night's eruption. Twelve bodies were recovered at the scene Friday, but the exact number of casualties was unclear.

Nelson was already set to play a show in Austin, Texas, on April 28, and in the aftermath of the devastating explosion he's turning the event into a benefit for West.

"West is just a few miles from my hometown of Abbott. I was born and raised here and it was my backyard growing up," Nelson said in a statement. "This is my community. These friends and neighbors have always been and are still a part of my life."

Proceeds from the show will now go to the West Volunteer Fire Department. Those who want to contribute can also visit Nelson's website for more information on how to help.

"My heart," Nelson said, "is praying for the community that we call home."

I have always liked Willie. He is truly the definition of a "good old boy". He always seems to be there to give a helping hand to those in need.

Awesome. Still remember many years ago when the IRS took everything! from Willie. Thankfully, his friends bought a lot of his own stuff during action and return them back to him.

Nelson for president! Seriously. He'd legalize pot and use the taxes from it to help senior citizens.

Also, Abbot Willie Nelson's home town lost 2 members of its 300 something inhabitants. You can be sure this tragedy has affected him. Shame on all of you for bringing politics into this. Now is the time to band together and left each other up as our Nation faces to horrible tragedies.

Willie Nelson. Is it any surprise he's one of the most loved citizens of this country? Never says a bad word about anyone, just does his thing. Class act all the way, and a national treasure.

You know palintwit, I was a lot like you during the elections, but from a right point of view. Then I realized all I was doing was enforcing the stereotype the liberals had established for us. All you're doing is making yourself look less than credible, which in effect reflects negatively on the party you so feverishly represent. Kudos for your commitment to your party, but let it go. You guys "won", be happy

You know – Granny used to say it takes all kinds. Umm NO it doesn't – we just have all kinds. And as you said – that kind will never be happy.

We arrive in rusty 1964 motorhomes.
We bring our bibles and loaded assault weapons.
We wear ridiculous clothing and have teabags dangling from our earlobes.
We carry misspelled racist signs as we stomp all over the White house lawn.
We eat Chick-fil-A and wash it down with Everclear.
We are Sarah Palin's real Americans.
We love the baby jesus but we love to boink our cousins even more.
We believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old and that early man walked with the dinosaurs.
We believe that nascar is a real sport and that Dale Earnhardt was a great American athlete.
We are the birthers. We are tea party patriots.
We are bigots and inbreds. We are morons and we are proud.

people Willie grew up 10 miles from where the blast accrued and all you can post is lewd and inappropriate statements on here! you should be ashamed of yourselves. 12 people have died, 200+ injured, a community of less than 3000 has been shaken to its core literally, the blast measured as a 2.1 earthquake. people are now homeless and lucky to be alive.
