Jay-Z pens 'Open Letter' to Cuba trip criticsDo not annoy Jay-Z. The rapper has recorded a song that appears to take on those who criticized his recent trip to Cuba with wife Beyoncé. Hip-hop site Global Grind reported that Jay-Z recorded "Open Letter" Wednesday night after seeing that their visit was the lead story on CNN.com.
The couple ventured to Cuba for their fifth wedding anniversary in a trip that the United States Treasury Department says was sanctioned. But it's clear the superstar rapper has taken umbrage at all of the attention and controversy surrounding the jaunt to the communist country, which is currently under a U.S. travel embargo. The tune includes the lyrics, "Obama said, 'chill you gon' get me impeached. You don't need this s**t anyway. Chill with me on the beach.'" CNN Political Ticker: Jay C. rips Jay-Z Jay-Z also addresses his reported plan to sell his shares in the Nets basketball team in order to allow his new sports agency to actively recruit ball player clients. "Would've brought the Nets to Brooklyn for free," he raps. "Except I made millions off you f***ing dweeb. I still own the building. I'm still keeping my seats. Y'all buy that bulls*** y'all better keep y'all receipts." the treasury dept is the division of our government that approves or denies permits to travel to cuba. the travel embargo's only restriction is that the u.s. doesn't want money spent in cuba. and because it deals with currency restrictions, it's under the treasury depts jurisdiction.

This whole embargo thing is nothing more than an old grudge. It's a relic of the cold war. I watched the statement by the Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and I wanted to ask her just one question: why the long face? It's not like three little Cuban piglets were dancing in the meadow and the big angry wolf Castro barged in and ate them. The reason he came to power was that Cuba was treated as an American brothel, a place where mafia would go to wash it's ill-gotten proceeds (a sort of Cayman Islands, so to speak). I can't blame people who want to do better than having a casino as a backbone of their national economy. Blame Frank Sinatra's mafia pals, if you wish.
There is no argument that great injustice was done by the Castro's regime to many honest Cubans. But they allowed that rotten Batista's regime to exist and in the end they paid the price for their acquiescence. It's a soft version of the fate of German civilians who died in the allied bombing campaigns. I think that calling Castro a "dictator" is an exaggeration. US supported death squads shooting people in the streets of Salvador and Guatemala in the name of freedom and democracy, – that's dictatorship. Kicking out some dissidents who don't know when to shut up, – that hardly justifies and act of war, which is what the embargo amounts to. And to say that it's targeting the regime rather than the people is akin to saying the same thing about carpet-bombing cities in the WW-2.
What is the end game of the embargo's supporters? How do they envision a "free" Cuba? I can tell you how it played out in Russia. That country was ruled by criminal gangs for the whole decade of the 1990-s, while the west was admiring "Gorbi" and democracy. By engaging Cuba we can foster development of a new society in that country. Castro is not immortal. Don't you want good people rather than a bunch of crooks to take over?
I think that those inquisitive Reps should be ashamed of their shallow vision. Jay-Z has nothing to be ashamed of.

I went to Cuba about 5 years ago with a group of 7 other US Citizens. I loved my short time there. When shopping for cosmetics which aCuban friend had told me could be given as small tokens of appreciation, I told the saleslady why i was purchasing so many lipsticks and nail polish-es, and foundations of every hue and tint. She said, "i don't uderstand why Americans have such a grudge against Cuba." I explained the/reminded her about the cold war nd how we didn't like their government because they were Communists. I also said that we have many Americans of Cuban descent who ask our government to keep up the pressure on the Cuban government because the current leader was responsible for them losing much of their land and wealth. She said, "Oh yeah. I remember some of that now." And then went on to ask, "But tell me why we let China own so much of the country, why it's OK for us to buy their goods and we hear how those goods are manufactured there so cheap and Americans lost their jobs. We trade and visit China all day everyday and its not a problem. I still don't get it." I thought, Me neither. I thanked her silently for a lesson in common sense!

Why do we have an embargo with Cuba? We can travel anywhere in the world, including in places with other nasty dictators (remember Dennis Rodman trip to North Korea). We do business with every country, including China, Saudi Arabia and so on and so forth. Can these politicians from Florida tell me how consistent their policies are: do they make sure that nothing they do and noone they interact with has violated human rights anywhere? If they do, then I will have some respect for them. However, if they choose to only be selective in their criticism, then they are just defending an indefensible policy. Besides, why should we continue to punish ordinary Cubans with this policy. They have not chosen their government, they cannot do anything about it. We should engage with Cuba and Cubans and stop this absurd policy that has achieved absolutely nothing in 50 years!

It shows that Cubans leaving the island are not leaving for political prosecution but for economic reasons like every other immigrant does. "Politician's don't create jobs" = debatable statement. A recently elected politician who hires a staff has technically created several jobs, correct? From a bigger scale perspective, you are somewhat correct; politicians don't personally, directly create jobs, but one of their duties to their country is to ensure there are adequate economic conditions so that others can create jobs. It sounds like they did everything legally. I don't really get the big deal. There are TONS of Americans who visit Cuba, I guess they just aren't as famous. I've had several groups of friends go. You just have to stop in Chile or Argentina (cant remember which) and then a tour company takes you from there. My friends said it was amazing. Friendly, beautiful people, great food. Infrastructure is a little rough but all in all a great vacation spot. I hope they lift the sanctions, I would love to go without all the travel hassle.
I aggree I think the sanctions should be lifted from Cuba, however whoever in the State office authorized the trip should be reprimanded and Jay-Z if he didn't follow legal channels should be fined. If not then we can all just ignore the sanctions on anything. But I definitely think its way past time to lift these sanctions.

The fact that they were in Cuba has absolutely NOTHING to do with their political affiliations or relationships. It is most likely that they were granted permission to travel due to his new venture in sports management to scout and recruit. Baseball in particular is HUGE in Cuba.
That aside, tens of thousands of everyday average civilian Americans travel to Cuba every year, sanctioned or not. It is VERY common for US citizens to travel to Cuba via Canada, Mexico or other Caribbean Islands. Just because you can't get a flight from home doesn't mean you can't get one elsewhere and the Cubans being aware of this, won't stamp US passports, they'll issue you a separate card that is stamped and returned upon departure.

Maybe one reason kids idolize singers, rappers and entertainer because they are INTERESTING. I was in Cuba 2 weeks ago on vacation. (I am Canadian)...the amount of people commenting on here have no idea what that place is or what goes on there. Its actually a really nice place with VERY nice people. ZERO crime because they are put in jail forever if you have a gun or any kind of drugs. The gov't pays their hydro, water and makes sure they all are healthy with free health care and education. Of course there is some bad like any place but every single person I talked too down there including staff @ the resort HAD a cell phone, they have ESPN, they have everything. Its communism done right and although they might not have the luxuries that we have in the USA and Canada, they dont need it or want it because it would take away from who they are...

I'd have to disagree. Just because Cancun is nice, doesn't mean the rest of Mexico is like that. You go 20 minutes away from just about any tourist attraction in any large American city and it's a dump.
Cuba has zero crime? They have a murder rate of 5.0, which is higher than almost every country in Europe and most US states.

I could be wrong...but...it's my understanding that you can visit Cuba as an American citizen, you just can't fly there directly...many Americans fly there from the Bahamas and the like...what's the big deal?..

You can't just fly there from another country either as an American Citizen. If you were in Mexico, for example, there are many daily flights to Cuba, however, as an American Citizen it is against the law to enter Cuba even from another country. How they get around it is this. You tell your hotel folks you want to go to Cuba, they tell you ok, make the flight arrangements and then tell you to leave your passport in a safe at your hotel. You are given a slip of paper to use at immigration when you arrive in Cuba. They know you are American and just stamp the paper as if it were a VISA. A lot of people do it; but no way would I leave my passport in another Country.

The attention this is getting is almost as dumb as the outdated embargo itself. They are not alone, thousands of Americans go to Cuba every year. Just take a look at the photo gallery on the website of the restaurant they reportedly ate at in Havana (Paladar la Guarida) – Kevin Spacey, Dany Glover, Jack Nicholson, Ed Harris, Jimmy Paige, Rob Schneider and Steven Spielberg are amongst the American celebrities that have had their photos taken in the past couple of years at that particular restaurant.
And before you say that these people have the money to get around the embargo, that has absolutely nothing to do with it. I work in the travel industry in Canada and there are huge numbers of Americans booking trips to Cuba that simply cross the border and depart from Canadian airports as the prices are good, beaches and people amazing and the Cuban's have learnt to stamp a separate card rather than passports on entry.

We're big fans of that warmer weather they have down south, especially toward the gulf. We've been toying around with the idea of flying to Jamaica or the Bahamas, but this article got me to thinking about Cuba. What sort of sight seeing do they have there? Does anyone speak English, or do we need to bone up on our Spanish? At the beaches, do they have little shower huts close by so my wife can wash the sand from out of her c o o t c h? That's always been a problem for her when we go to the beach.
