Jay-Z pens 'Open Letter' to Cuba trip critics

Do not annoy Jay-Z.

The rapper has recorded a song that appears to take on those who criticized his recent trip to Cuba with wife Beyoncé.

Hip-hop site Global Grind reported that Jay-Z recorded "Open Letter" Wednesday night after seeing that their visit was the lead story on CNN.com.

The couple ventured to Cuba for their fifth wedding anniversary in a trip that the United States Treasury Department says was sanctioned.

But it's clear the superstar rapper has taken umbrage at all of the attention and controversy surrounding the jaunt to the communist country, which is currently under a U.S. travel embargo. The tune includes the lyrics, "Obama said, 'chill you gon' get me impeached. You don't need this s**t anyway. Chill with me on the beach.'"

CNN Political Ticker: Jay C. rips Jay-Z

Jay-Z also addresses his reported plan to sell his shares in the Nets basketball team in order to allow his new sports agency to actively recruit ball player clients.

"Would've brought the Nets to Brooklyn for free," he raps.  "Except I made millions off you f***ing dweeb. I still own the building. I'm still keeping my seats. Y'all buy that bulls*** y'all better keep y'all receipts."

Listen to the song here:

The story on Global Grind (which is headed by rap impresario Russell Simmons) also contains photos of the rap superstar in the studio with hip-hop producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, who are believed to have worked on the track.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé are Americans. They go and do as they please. The "servants" in the U.S. Government have no business telling their "BOSSES" what they can or cannot do.

the treasury dept is the division of our government that approves or denies permits to travel to cuba. the travel embargo's only restriction is that the u.s. doesn't want money spent in cuba. and because it deals with currency restrictions, it's under the treasury depts jurisdiction.

Interesting that we Americans can not go to Cuba yet our government can operate a base there.
If I understand correctly, our government does not want us to spend OUR money there which would somehow support the Cuban government.
So how much of OUR money is the US government spending to lease GTMO?
Or does Cuba just let them stay there for free?

This whole embargo thing is nothing more than an old grudge. It's a relic of the cold war. I watched the statement by the Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and I wanted to ask her just one question: why the long face? It's not like three little Cuban piglets were dancing in the meadow and the big angry wolf Castro barged in and ate them. The reason he came to power was that Cuba was treated as an American brothel, a place where mafia would go to wash it's ill-gotten proceeds (a sort of Cayman Islands, so to speak). I can't blame people who want to do better than having a casino as a backbone of their national economy. Blame Frank Sinatra's mafia pals, if you wish.

There is no argument that great injustice was done by the Castro's regime to many honest Cubans. But they allowed that rotten Batista's regime to exist and in the end they paid the price for their acquiescence. It's a soft version of the fate of German civilians who died in the allied bombing campaigns. I think that calling Castro a "dictator" is an exaggeration. US supported death squads shooting people in the streets of Salvador and Guatemala in the name of freedom and democracy, – that's dictatorship. Kicking out some dissidents who don't know when to shut up, – that hardly justifies and act of war, which is what the embargo amounts to. And to say that it's targeting the regime rather than the people is akin to saying the same thing about carpet-bombing cities in the WW-2.

What is the end game of the embargo's supporters? How do they envision a "free" Cuba? I can tell you how it played out in Russia. That country was ruled by criminal gangs for the whole decade of the 1990-s, while the west was admiring "Gorbi" and democracy. By engaging Cuba we can foster development of a new society in that country. Castro is not immortal. Don't you want good people rather than a bunch of crooks to take over?

I think that those inquisitive Reps should be ashamed of their shallow vision. Jay-Z has nothing to be ashamed of.

I went to Cuba about 5 years ago with a group of 7 other US Citizens. I loved my short time there. When shopping for cosmetics which aCuban friend had told me could be given as small tokens of appreciation, I told the saleslady why i was purchasing so many lipsticks and nail polish-es, and foundations of every hue and tint. She said, "i don't uderstand why Americans have such a grudge against Cuba." I explained the/reminded her about the cold war nd how we didn't like their government because they were Communists. I also said that we have many Americans of Cuban descent who ask our government to keep up the pressure on the Cuban government because the current leader was responsible for them losing much of their land and wealth. She said, "Oh yeah. I remember some of that now." And then went on to ask, "But tell me why we let China own so much of the country, why it's OK for us to buy their goods and we hear how those goods are manufactured there so cheap and Americans lost their jobs. We trade and visit China all day everyday and its not a problem. I still don't get it." I thought, Me neither. I thanked her silently for a lesson in common sense!

This is for you dummies that think the President let them personally go to Cuba. Many Americans have been there. This is what the rules stipulate for travel to Cuba, which ANY American can do with proper permission:

It is our understanding that the travelers in question traveled to Cuba pursuant to an educational exchange trip organized by a group authorized by OFAC [the Office of Foreign Assets Control] to sponsor and organize programs to promote people-to-people contact in Cuba,” the letter read.Due to the U.S. government's travel embargo with Cuba, Americans are prohibited from visiting the communist country for tourism. U.S. citizens can apply for licenses to go anyway, provided they show substantial proof they intend to visit for specific reasons, such as for business or education. And they must also provide a detailed itinerary.

Why do we have an embargo with Cuba? We can travel anywhere in the world, including in places with other nasty dictators (remember Dennis Rodman trip to North Korea). We do business with every country, including China, Saudi Arabia and so on and so forth. Can these politicians from Florida tell me how consistent their policies are: do they make sure that nothing they do and noone they interact with has violated human rights anywhere? If they do, then I will have some respect for them. However, if they choose to only be selective in their criticism, then they are just defending an indefensible policy. Besides, why should we continue to punish ordinary Cubans with this policy. They have not chosen their government, they cannot do anything about it. We should engage with Cuba and Cubans and stop this absurd policy that has achieved absolutely nothing in 50 years!

The biggest problem with rap and what it did wrong to the music industry?

Music is NOT an INDUSTRY– it is supposed to be an ARTFORM. Rappers are more worried about their "image" than making memorable, timeless music. That is why their "music" is nothing but a retard bragging about his crimes superimposed over a synthesized beat.

Jay Z and Sasha are both elite supporters of Obama and dont really fit the prerequesites to qualify so it raises some questions as to how they were given the visa to visit a country that has been on a boycott list for over 50 years. "Politician's don't create jobs" = debatable statement. A recently elected politician who hires a staff has technically created several jobs, correct? From a bigger scale perspective, you are somewhat correct; politicians don't personally, directly create jobs, but one of their duties to their country is to ensure there are adequate economic conditions so that others can create jobs. So, indirectly, they DO play into the job creation process.

So true. One should check the history of Cuba when Batista was president, b/4 Castro. Those ppl who left Cuba were the 2% who didn't even allow their own ppl to stay in the fabulous hotels the wealthy Americans stayed in. B/c the Cuban PPl were starving including children Russia a communist country came to their rescue after sanction by the USA.

It is a disgrace for The United States of America to boycott this country b/c Castro gave his country back to the masses who were poor worked in the fine hotels for very little, couldn't even stay in hotels in their own country. This is history, b/c of lack of education the 2% that wants to rule the world get away with this kind of behavior. Just take a look at the literacy rate in the RED STATES in the USA. I wish we had the GUTS in America to end this kind of madness against our fellow man. Oh, I forgot they are ppl of color, Latinos. Read THE RIDDLE OF RACISM by C. Carl Hirsch.

Ok everyone just hold on here a minute. I'm a travel agent here in Florida and yes you can travel to Cuba if you go with a tour operator or if you get permission from our government which is what JZ & B did. There are at least 3 different tour operators that are allowed to take US citizens to Cuba…

Here is one – – General Tours. You can look at their brochure on line...

It sounds like they did everything legally. I don't really get the big deal. There are TONS of Americans who visit Cuba, I guess they just aren't as famous. I've had several groups of friends go. You just have to stop in Chile or Argentina (cant remember which) and then a tour company takes you from there. My friends said it was amazing. Friendly, beautiful people, great food. Infrastructure is a little rough but all in all a great vacation spot. I hope they lift the sanctions, I would love to go without all the travel hassle.

I aggree I think the sanctions should be lifted from Cuba, however whoever in the State office authorized the trip should be reprimanded and Jay-Z if he didn't follow legal channels should be fined. If not then we can all just ignore the sanctions on anything. But I definitely think its way past time to lift these sanctions.

ahhhhh, Raul. The REAL way of thinking of cubans comes through with your posting. you nor the million or so cubans that we WELCOMED into the UNITED STATES of AMERICA really care about this country that saved you from the clutches of fidel. If any of you were REAL men as you pretend to be here in MIAMI you or your parents would have stayed and fought for your freedom but why bother, you got a free ride to the land of the free and free food stamps and other government handouts on arrival. Real men fight for the country like those in Egypt, Syria, Palestine etc.
FOR the rest of you who may not know this, NO other nationality in the world has status where once their cuban foot touches US soil they are granted status in this country AND are given handouts. ANY other nationality like Haitian's, Canadian's, Indians etc would be put on the next plane and sent back to their country. cubans have not made Miami what it is today if you are speaking of progress. Yes, they have made Miami a S**T hole. Had cubans not been allowed to migrate to Miami as they have, born and bred Americans would have continued to move from the north growing the economy and prosperity of the area but when they saw what was happening to Miami because of the influx of cubans, they now go west. Good choice on their part. I know, I grew up here. Please fulfill ALL of your cuban promises and when fidel or raul are gone GO BACK to cuba and leave some room for others around the world who really want to make a life here in the UNITED STATES and work for success without the government providing handouts when they arrive. PLEASE GO BACK SOON! PS go ahead and make all the comments you like. As this posting should not bother you as it is MY opinion, your comment about me will not bother me. Remember, we do live in America (though living in Miami you would not know this) so I do have the right to speak freely still I think.

Stupid people: are you aware that Americans travel to Cuba, China, Vietnam and a host of other countries that happen to have their own political system which they feel is better suited for them?

Only Americans are arrogant (and ignorant) enough to think we shouldn't travel to Cuba. Fools. No wonder this country is such a mess – very little brains out there.

Granted they are rich, arrogant, above-the-law people but still, at base, just people. What they think and say is no better than what you or I think or say so could we just lose them. Better they stayed in Cuba for all I care. (BTW – nice that JZ has a global platform to respond to his critics, basically telling them to shove-off and shut-up, while regular people have little recourse when they are accused of doing something wrong. When you and I are accused of wrong-doing and have to fight the government, we usually lose, not enought money and no global audience.

Those rules were place there over 50 yrs ago. Cuba isnt a threat to the USA at all. The main problem are the wealthy white cubans in Miami. Cuba is much safer than any place in the USA. Remember Viet Nam and all the USA soldiers that got killed during that war? Why are they our best friends now and is OK to travel there and deal with them now. Castro had NEVER invaded the USA or killed any USA soldiers. Embargo is OBSOLETE and should had been lifted years ago for all it does is hurt the normal Cuban folks. The embargo had made wealthy many Cubans in the USA. USA citizens should be able to travel any where in the world! Just like Europeans and Canadians do.

Yep, trailer trash – y'all cannot stop a black man and his wife from enjoying a nice tropical vacation. I've been to Cuba – the people are nice, the beaches are great, and the folks there are smart enough to know that Fidel Castro was a world hero who freed the Cuban slaves from the murderous Nazi Bautista.

Problem is, many Americans are from German decent, and pretty much admire Nazi's. That is why American Presidents have always supported and funded regimes like Saddam Hussein, the Shah of Iran, the Saudi Bush Presidents, the Panamanian Bush President (Noriega) etc....

Get real will you and stop labeling all white people. I am sick of hearing all this crap. It wouldn't have mattered to me if it were Beyonce or Kidd Rock going to Cuba; if we supposedly have laws that say we can't go there then why should they be given any different treatment that you and I? That is what it boils down to; has nothing to do with who is white and who is black. I can't stand that the news media can travel to Cuba either. Makes no sense to me. But to turn this into something racial is ridiculous. Just as ridiculous are the people who think that our President personally approved their visit.

Anyone surprised that he gets special treatment for being friends with the president has their head in the sand. That is standard procedure. You should be ashamed CNN. Not one word on Melinda McCormick, and her race-based murder. If the profiles were different it would be the top 5 articles. Shame.

The reason everyone was so upset about the Jay Z trip is that it illustrates that the current administration has two sets of rules:

    1. Friends of Obama – Dont have to play by the rules.

Nope, all it shows is how ignorant and partisan the majority of the American population is. Its amazing how people on this site will turn absolutely ANY topic into an excuse to spew their fervent dogmatic political nonesense.

The fact that they were in Cuba has absolutely NOTHING to do with their political affiliations or relationships. It is most likely that they were granted permission to travel due to his new venture in sports management to scout and recruit. Baseball in particular is HUGE in Cuba.

That aside, tens of thousands of everyday average civilian Americans travel to Cuba every year, sanctioned or not. It is VERY common for US citizens to travel to Cuba via Canada, Mexico or other Caribbean Islands. Just because you can't get a flight from home doesn't mean you can't get one elsewhere and the Cubans being aware of this, won't stamp US passports, they'll issue you a separate card that is stamped and returned upon departure.

Maybe one reason kids idolize singers, rappers and entertainer because they are INTERESTING. This statement is made a lot but unless you are doing something amazing, why expect your kids to look at you in awe when most of you hate your job, don't live out or have dreams, rarely see your family or vacation and you do nothing out of the ordinary? It makes no sense, outside of not providing the parent with a sense of elitism to fill their ego.

You’re already separating them from yourself because they’re a different color, and because you perceive them to act differently because of that. THAT is what makes you a racist, and that’s an undeniable FACT.

And that's an interesting blog name you chose there, Keel Hauler, referencing an act of violence against other human beings. Keel Hauling was often used during the slave trade, to torture and kill captured African's who were "acting up" on board the slave trader's ships en route to America.

Its actually a really nice place with VERY nice people. ZERO crime because they are put in jail forever if you have a gun or any kind of drugs. The gov't pays their hydro, water and makes sure they all are healthy with free health care and education. Of course there is some bad like any place but every single person I talked too down there including staff @ the resort HAD a cell phone, they have ESPN, they have everything. Its communism done right and although they might not have the luxuries that we have in the USA and Canada, they dont need it or want it because it would take away from who they are...

That is just so cute... your candor is almost funny. You went as a tourist – you saw the good stuff for tourist only. You seem to need to read a little more and educate yourself. The tourist area is just about 5% of what Cuba is all about including the area per square footage. The workers on those resorts are hand-picked and trained AND watched. I am glad you had a fantastic time in Cuba but us Americans don't support communism.

All that money and all of the business enterprises you and your wife are involved and yet you cannot write a decent letter to express your frustration... Rapping is not writing – it is street talk. You, Mr. Jay-Z and your wife went to a country in which Communism still exist, liberty has been taken away as well as freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Their government was once an ally of Russia. This country of Cuba their people are poor and dying. 99% of their population don't know what is a cell phone. You are a disgrace to the American people. Yes, you have a lot of money and could have chosen any where in the world to go; however, the people as in us made you rich because we listen to many of your and your wife's songs, you became popular and rich because of democracy. Don't forget that and stop supporting Communism. At the end of the day, that is what you did. You didn't go and gave millions of dollars to orphanages or created some kind of non-profit for education to the young children... and your wife dressed up like she was from the island which she is not. Be yourselves – there is nothing wrong with that and since you have all that money, get an education and educate yourself about the realities of the world...

Yes Rubio a Cuban looking for money and rapping Jay-Z's music on the Senate floor while selling Rubio water for 25 dollars is jealous, Rep Diaz-Balart is just doing what he is told by his boss the Conservative while giving a shout out to his Uncle Fidal Castro. Poor Rep. Ros-Lehitnen born and raised in Havana Cuba now a citizen of America and elected official just wants to be included and will say and do anything. Senator Rafael Cruz a Canadian/Cuban just saw a way to be white by changing his name to Ted. It's funny to what the Conservatives use minorities and then drop them like Allen West and Herman Cain who are both no longer needed and looking for jobs.

Really people. You support this fool who has no problem disparaging and disrespecting their supporters. Same for his wife. No talent who threw her father to the curb as soon as he helped to fame. She felt so guilty after firing him, she had to go "home and make love to her husband". I tried to like her but after she said that, I realized she is a moron. Voice? what voice it is all lip-sync. They thinks too highly of themselves and all of you are idiots to support them. I've never bought anything fr these two and now I never will. But they don't have to worry b/c there are sooooo many " f***ing dweebs" that will follow.

I could be wrong...but...it's my understanding that you can visit Cuba as an American citizen, you just can't fly there directly...many Americans fly there from the Bahamas and the like...what's the big deal?..

You can't just fly there from another country either as an American Citizen. If you were in Mexico, for example, there are many daily flights to Cuba, however, as an American Citizen it is against the law to enter Cuba even from another country. How they get around it is this. You tell your hotel folks you want to go to Cuba, they tell you ok, make the flight arrangements and then tell you to leave your passport in a safe at your hotel. You are given a slip of paper to use at immigration when you arrive in Cuba. They know you are American and just stamp the paper as if it were a VISA. A lot of people do it; but no way would I leave my passport in another Country.

I've heard several disturbing things about these two but who knows what's true? I think Rodman going to North Korea is more controversial than this. How nice it must be though, to have a platform to make fun of others, and some people are paying for it. Kinda low-class. If I were a fan I'd be offended by his perception that I may be low-class too.

The attention this is getting is almost as dumb as the outdated embargo itself. They are not alone, thousands of Americans go to Cuba every year. Just take a look at the photo gallery on the website of the restaurant they reportedly ate at in Havana (Paladar la Guarida) – Kevin Spacey, Dany Glover, Jack Nicholson, Ed Harris, Jimmy Paige, Rob Schneider and Steven Spielberg are amongst the American celebrities that have had their photos taken in the past couple of years at that particular restaurant.

And before you say that these people have the money to get around the embargo, that has absolutely nothing to do with it. I work in the travel industry in Canada and there are huge numbers of Americans booking trips to Cuba that simply cross the border and depart from Canadian airports as the prices are good, beaches and people amazing and the Cuban's have learnt to stamp a separate card rather than passports on entry.

You work in the travel industry up here in the great white north? That's good to hear. The Mrs. and I like to travel (we have an RV) with the kids, mostly around Canada or down into the U.S. of A. We're big fans of that warmer weather they have down south, especially toward the gulf. We've been toying around with the idea of flying to Jamaica or the Bahamas, but this article got me to thinking about Cuba. What sort of sight seeing do they have there? Does anyone speak English, or do we need to bone up on our Spanish? At the beaches, do they have little shower huts close by so my wife can wash the sand from out of her c o o t c h? That's always been a problem for her when we go to the beach.

So the American CBP officer doesn't see the two Canadian entry stamps a week apart, with a land port of entry (when you drive in) followed by an airport entry (when you fly back from Cuba)? You aren't fooling anyone.

Nobody is perfect. This is America and Americans have the Freedom to respond to their critics. Once you go beyond saying a person is a fellow American than that's where racism comes in. So what your saying a group of American should just shut up and take it? Another American can't disagree with you? I'm sure there are people in your life that you have disagree with and you didn't think they was racist. The lack of tolerance in America has become really bad.

It's because when you have an embargo against a country it is designed to hit them where they hurt. For Cuba that was American Tourism. Much like Jamaica, Mexican Islands etc. Cuba used to be a popular tourist destination for Americans. By cutting that off, it hurt Cuba. Who vacations in North Korea?

Jay-Z is a brilliant business man and an excellent rapper. All his best songs tell a story from which any listener could learn a lesson or two about life.

I don't know why anyone cared that he and his wife vacationed in Cuba since that's just the sort of thing that rich people do. They go to places regular people can't, and usually just to get away from the press. At least this time the overzealous newshounds gave Jay a reason to write another song. I'm gonna have to check that out later.

Because that is what he sounds like. A whiny kid acting out because he has the money to do and say as he pleases. Maybe teachers need to be graded.

Any time the music teacher wants a lesson in music, you let me know. Obviously you know as much about music and the english language as a nun knows fornicating. I truly believe that Mr. Z is english language challenged. If you were actually a teacher you would know that there is proper english, grammatically correct, and then there is a slang that really cant be construed as english. Beyonce may not write the drivel he does, but again, that dosent make him musically talented, singing, harmony, melody or playing an instrument does.
