'Glee' star Cory Monteith checks into rehab

"Glee" actor Cory Monteith, who's portrayed Finn Hudson on the Fox comedy since it began in 2009, has checked into rehab.

A rep tells CNN that the 30-year-old has voluntarily entered a treatment facility for substance addiction.

"He graciously asks for your respect and privacy as he takes the necessary steps towards recovery," Monteith's rep says in a statement.

Monteith has been frank about his struggles with substance abuse, telling Parade magazine in 2011 that he began using drugs at 13, and by 19 went into rehab after his mother and friends intervened.

"I’m lucky on so many counts - I’m lucky to be alive," Monteith said at the time. "I had a serious problem."

As Monteith's present efforts at recovery have become public, his girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele is standing behind him. The 26-year-old actress, who began publicly dating Monteith in 2012, tweeted on Sunday that she's feeling "so grateful."

"I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this," she added to People magazine. "I am grateful and proud that he made this decision."

Monteith, it seems, is feeling the same gratitude.

"[S]uch a beautiful day!" he tweeted on March 28. "Truly seeing the forest for the trees. #gratitude"

naturally like your web-site however you have to test the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I find it very bothersome to tell the truth however I'll certainly come again again.

This is getting old. Show me an article about a celebrity that ISN'T going into rehab for something. It'll save me some time...

A lot of this garbage has to be an act. Why is it that none of these people can be smart with their money, and not do terrible things to themselves? Its almost like they accept it as part of "celebrity culture", and it gets their name in the press more often.

And before any of your fools give me that, "If you don't care, why'd you read the article?" BS, I wanted to know what the ramifications on the show would be when he went to rehab. I happen to like the show.... don't give a s–t about him really...

Celebrities aren't the only ones with addiction issues, you would be shocked to learn how many people in our society are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. The issue has become epidemic now that people are getting addicted to prescription drugs.

the person has too admit they have the addiction....once they realize it then they can move forward...if they do not feel they need help nothing will stop them they will continue their life style.......i have helped a number of people with alcohol and some drug addiction....(truth)....i have helped some people without rehab and some i decided needed further help....but forcing the person too stop will never work....

i just helped a male friend of mine i know for many years...taper off the alcohol...you can't just preach and say STOP drinking or stop doing drugs!!! they will never listen.

i was able too finally reach my friends brain and convince him to pull back......you can't pound on people to do things they do not want too do...

People can go too a bar and not go crazy...it can be done...you can go out with the boys or girls and slow the drinking down....you do not have to stop drinking completely but there is a way too slow it down

.i don't believe in throwing someone into rehab either–she or he has too feel the strength too want too do it that is where i come in as a coach....you can do everything you want...fashion shows, makeup parties, bars, ballgames,
whatever....i taught mike how too hang out and not go crazy–i taught mike how too hang out at a bar and watch everyone get plastered and taught him how to remain in control....this does not work for everyone but it worked for my friend...this process took about a year, he screwed up 1 night and i stormed out of the bar and did not speak too him for a month...he called and needed help again....now he appears too be drinking in moderation...

i have an uncle who had a problem with wine (truth)...he thought he was just having fun...1 bottle went to 2 bottles...he was not listening too his daughter and one night my aunt called me and asked me too help him..his drinking is in moderation now thank god...he has a huge career and could have lost it.

WOOOOW I like this guy. He is a good actor. His character is genuine. And there are a lot of good messages for our kids in this show. But they make this sound like he is a cancer patient or something. Like maybe they are in mourning for him. Respect his privacy? Recovery? NOOOOOO He is a criminal if he is a drug abuser. He is not a good roll model for your kids as a drug user. We should not feel sympathy for him nor should we treat him like a hero when he completes rehab. I am knowledgeable about addiction. I understand addictive personalities. All that is good and well. But in the end, he is still just a human being that could not maintain control.

Yeah...because its totally helpful to that person to demonize them and make them feel like crap for the dumb decisions they make, even if they do manage to get clean. That won't drive them back into doing drugs again or anything like that. I hope you never have anyone you love become a drug addict because I would feel absolutely terrible for that person.

I bet he can ROLL a mean phattie! Probably can do it with one hand, and I bet it burns nice and even. If he's on the pills, though, that's different. Stealing grandma's pain meds or going to multiple docs for opiates is bad news. Weed, shrooms and beer are fine, though, especially if you got some good music and maybe some cool black light posters. Pffffft, cough, cough, you want some?

I have no respect for drug addicts. Good for them if they go to rehab to clean themselves up. There are so many other nice actors that can replace him. They should just fire him for substance abuse and when he is cleaned up he can work somewhere else or work his way back up on this show.

Many of the comments shown here are pathetic. You folks need to get a life. There is nothing to be gained by being un-feeling and nasty. Life will be a sour experience for many of you.
This young man has actually accomplished something. This young man also has an addiction problem. The woman in the picture is his co-star and his girlfriend. She is giving him her support and for what it's worth, he has mine.
