The Rock: G.I. Joe was my family

For Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, joining the cast of the "G.I. Joe" franchise was a little bit like coming home.

As the actor told CNN at the movie's premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday, he was a big fan of the action figures when he was growing up as an only child.

"'G.I. Joe' and 'Star Wars' action figures, they were my family," Johnson said. "So you can imagine what it was like to get the phone call saying, 'Hey, we want you to be a G.I. Joe, we want you to lead the Joes, and then we have this idea to really reignite the franchise.'"

That idea involved casting Johnson as the lead of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," the follow-up to 2009's "G.I. Joe," which starred Channing Tatum. Jon Chu directed the action flick, which has been described as grittier, and not as keen on the "cartoonish" but fun moments some critics picked up on in the first installment.

But for Johnson, who's starred in the "Fast & Furious" franchise as well as the "Journey" series, he sees "G.I. Joe" as another "massive opportunity."

"I enjoy being in franchises because they make a lot of people happy around the world," he said. "That's a lot of smiles, and that's a cool thing."

  2. When is the Rock as Jesus movie coming out?

Does anyone know? Personally, I am very excited for it. Dwayne Johnson has the god-like stature that will be perfect for his portrayal as the son of God.

Was a good action movie and definitely more gritty than the previous version. Switched things up a bit which caught me off guard but appreciated. Rock definitely did his thing in this one and has gotten better with each film. Really a class act so good to see him progressing in this field. Hope they keep up the good work.

I have to disagree with your assessment. I was sincerely hoping this movie would be significantly better than the first GI Joe movie, but sadly it was not. I love a good action movie, but you still need to have a decent story with characters the audience will enjoy. In the case of this movie, all you had was some action.

The Rock didn't ruin the franchise. Did you not even see the first movie? And although I didn't enjoy this movie any more than the first, I definitely don't blame him for it. This movie really just lacked a decent story with good character development. The Rock would have actually been an excellent choice for Roadblock.

  30. Can't Believe

I think the casting of Duane Johnson as Jesus in that upcoming Miramax film is a travesty and nothing short of sacrilegious. For one thing he looks nothing like the son of God. Typical of the liberal Hollywood elite to do something like this just to infuriate those of us who follow the True path.

I have always liked the Rock. He takes on such different roles, from bad azz to a tooth fairy. Who would do that? I think he's a guy that just likes to have fun, and doesn't take life so seriously. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen one of his movies that I didn't like.
