Michelle Shocked speaks on anti-gay rantSinger Michelle Shocked lived up to her name over the weekend when she went on what some perceived to be an anti-gay rant at a performance in San Francisco. As Yahoo! Music reports, the folk-rock artist told the crowd gathered at her show on Sunday that they could "go on Twitter and say, 'Michelle Shocked says God hates f**s." Her statements, which included remarks in opposition to gay marriage, led to most of the audience walking out of the venue, Yahoo! says.
In a statement, Shocked says her comments were misinterpreted. "I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else). I said that some of His followers believe that," she said. When she encouraged the audience to tweet that "Michelle Shocked says 'God hates f**s,'" Shocked said she was "predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted. The show was all music, and the audience tweets said they enjoyed it. The commentary came about ten minutes later, in the encore." To her fans who've been disappointed by the incident, Shocked extends an apology. "I'm very sorry: I don't always express myself as clearly as I should," she said. "But don't believe everything you read on Facebook or Twitter. My view of homosexuality has changed not one iota. I judge not. And my statement equating repeal of Prop 8 with the coming of the End Times was neither literal nor ironic: it was a description of how some folks – not me – feel about gay marriage. "The show, and the rant, was spontaneous. As for those applauding my so-called stance that 'God Hates F****ts,' I say they should be met with mercy, not hate," she went on. "And I hope that what remains of my audience will meet that intolerance with understanding, even of those who might hate them." So was it all just a publicity stunt? Shocked says she's neither that clever, nor that cynical. "Folks wonder about my sexuality, but denying being gay is like saying I never beat my husband. My sexuality is not at issue. What is being questioned is my support for the LGBT community, and that has never wavered. Music and activism have always been part of my work and my journey, which I hope and intend to continue," she said. "I am damn sorry. If I could repeat the evening, I would make a clearer distinction between a set of beliefs I abhor, and my human sympathy for the folks who hold them. I say this not because I want to look better. I have no wish to hide my faults, and – clearly – I couldn't if I tried." |

Greetings! This is my first comment right right here so I just required to give a quick shout out and say I genuinely enjoy reading through your articles. Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that deal with the same topics? Thank you! backlink http://fiverr.com/twnseobacklink
Who is he? I've never heard of him? What kinda name is Michelle, for a guy?
*
oops sorry, wrong venue....
can i talk with you
any off color or inappropriate for underage already has a signature statement prior to the performance...
Does a comedian put up a sign that says "some of my content may offend you"? Well, he should never have to. If you go out to be entertained, you should suck it up that the chances you may be offended are not zero. It's just words.
Am I the only one who thought she dropped a bit further into a Texas twang as she went into the anti-gay stuff?
I think it is funny how one persons intolerence is another persons opinion and the opinion is always squashed by the people screming for tolerence. This is still free coutry I thought
Check again....
Yes, it's a free country. That means she can express whatever she wants, and we are free to react and comment with our own opinions.
Here's a pastoral response to Michelle's outburst and her response to it.

You got something to say say it to my face...
bye.
Michelle can try and spin this as much as she wants. All you have to do is listen to the audio clip to see that she is clearly a born again christian filled with intolerance for the gay community. Her lame apology was obviously written by her publicist because the words are too cleaver to be Michelle's. The apology was made because of all the lost revenue that her camp is now loosing from canceled shows.
-
she was raised mormon, almost as bad/intolerant as a born again christian. both must go.

This not the Queen of England i have to bow too....
John Becker posted and transcribed portions of the audio from the concert in question on his website. There is no doubt that Shocked went on an anti-gay tirade, and that this statement of her's is at worst a blatant lie about what she actually said: http://www.johnmbecker.com/2013/03/20/michelle-shocked-audio-emerge/
Another religeous nutbag who doesn't deserve a platform to preach from. 200 years and this is the best they can come up with? BTW this mess don't look all that hetero to me.
2000 years I meant-
Cut her some slack. It's difficult to stay relevant let alone popular when you are a performer. You've got so many disparate groups all wanting you to be important only for them, and if you express opinions (whether you do it badly or well) there will always be people eager to jump down your throat. Christ, I remember being SO disappointed to learn many years ago that Joni Mitchell smoked cigarettes! As if it was any of my business. For a singer, the main thing is the songs, and those who listen to them might want to think about sticking to how they feel about the words of the songs rather than some chance comment that comes out of the performer's mouth that has absolutely nothing to do with his or her songwriting.
I used to like Ted nugent until he went all teabag crazy. Threatening to kill the president, and bringing his guns to his shows, the man has turned into a nut case. Yeah, an entertainers opinions can turn off their fans very easily.
i want too see her high end house we can do that from here right?
Not to worry Michelle... you're still as irrelevant as you were before.
this women needs too go away...she's not talented
It was a do do
Thank you...i want him part of this show forever....
I don't believe a word of it! And backpeddling won't help, the damage is done.
and this show gave so much peace now more then ever...i hope it gets renewed so we can be further informed
it took her another year of being convinced to go back in ....49 doesn't fear anyone...the right decision was made and stop being redundant because i am not repeating myself anymore...sure there is an attraction but Eddie will never leave the group...
you gotta move forward with you-everyone is done with this...
She's learning, now, what many have learned before: it don't pay to hate teh gay...
Backpaddling isn't going to help. The damage has been done.
she always seems too be the only one at the party...
but I always thought that she was one of those Eski 'mos.
what made you think that...
I dunno, maybe the butchy hair-do?
you mean like a fur trader?
Yes, someone who "trades in fur," if you will.
beavers, mostly. beaver fur...
There is so much studying to do tonight at 830PM
just making sure you heard. new time. it's nap time now.
Everybody loves me. I'm the life of the party.
Am I the only one who was surprised to learn that she's not painting billboards for a living these days?
