Jimmy Fallon on 'Tonight Show' rumors

It seems everyone but Jimmy Fallon is wondering when the comedian will get a shot at hosting "The Tonight Show."

The rumors about Fallon replacing Jay Leno on the NBC program, which the network's declined to comment on, have been heavy recently. The New York Times' Bill Carter reported Wednesday that the network has made a commitment to Fallon in regards to him succeeding Leno, and Carter reiterated as much while speaking with CNN's Jake Tapper.

"The idea that Jimmy was getting the show was kind of out there, because Jay's got one contract that he's working on, and he's 62, so there was an expectation that he would be leaving soon, if not this contract, then maybe another year," Carter said. "So Jimmy getting the show was kind of expected."

There's isn't a deal in place, Carter said - it's more like an understanding, which he's sure Leno knows about. Carter earlier reported that the expectation is for the change to happen by the fall of 2014, at the latest, and that "The Tonight Show" will move from California back to New York.

"There's a lot of reasons for it - I think they all feel that the energy of New York helps Fallon," Carter said. "But also you have Lorne Michaels, who's the producer of the show, and has always been close to Jimmy and he's of course New York-based. And  then you have the band, The Roots, and The Roots are a Philadelphia-based band, and some of the guys I think still commute to New York, and they're very important to that show and I don't think they wanted to lose them."

There isn't a set timetable for the move to happen, however, and for the time being, it sounds like Fallon is playing it cool. As he said in a new interview with GQ, he's not really thinking about the chances that he'll host "Tonight."

“I mean, in the nicest way, who really cares," Fallon said. "In the nicest way. It would be great, sure, I guess. I’d love it, but it’s not on my mind. I’m in no rush to do anything. I’m kind of a boring character in that book. I’m not in a fight with Jay or Conan, or any of them. I don’t have that story.”

According to "Late Night" producer Michaels, though, Fallon on "The Tonight Show" is less of an "if" as much as it is a "when."

“I’m not allowed to say it - yet," he told GQ. "But I think there’s an inevitability to it. He’s the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation.”

Mr. Fallon–I wish you luck if/when you get the position. I'm sure you'll rise to the occasion! I happen to think you're
very talented. If everyone is Sooo upset about this, Ask Mr. M. for a write-in/vote-in. The person with the most points gets a try for "x" number of months and so on. Thats one way of trying to settle.

JF can be funny but he's not very clever or quick of wit like Carson was, in fact at times he seems naive and ill informed, but by today's left of center party line standards he's a comic genus

The Tonight Show is produced and made in Los Angeles for a reason. The movie stars are working nearby. Moving the Tonight Show to New York would be terrible. Leave Jimmy Fallon and his "good buddy" Lorne Michaels in NYC. Find another real comedian and entertainer to fill Leno's shoes!

Fallon is a creative comedian and does a lot of funny skits and games, etc. But to be fair, he's simply not a very good interviewer. He's not bad, but he's not great either. I would describe him as good. And good is just not good enough to take over the Tonight Show. But I don't think it's fair to set Carson as the bar because that's nearly impossible to reach. Do you think NBC knew that Carson would become CARSON when they hired him? Nope. No can ever know that they're hiring a legend for a position like that. You have to cross your fingers and give it a few years to know what you really have.

It is one thing to replace Leno if his ratings are down but his rating are great. What NBC is doing is telling his current audience that they are not important. Its a different demographic that they want and current Jay Leno watchers can go to hell. Well ok we will go to hell. Bye NBC. May your ratings suck even more. Karma will find a way

I think Leno wants to retire. He has made millions on this gig, so he can stay home and play with his cars. I also wonder if his failure in prime time might make him want to just walk away. I doubt the network really wants to get rid of him, but if he is going anyway, you might as well make adjustments.

For those who say Fallon is bland, so was Carson – Nebraska bland – a nerdy magician. But he was brilliant. People get tired of edgy after a while. Look at the guest list for Fallon – for such a time slot. Justin Timberlake was on for an entire week. Who would do that for any other host? And Jimmy has musical talent. No other host can relate to musical guests like him. I think he will succeed.

I can't believe how many Fallon haters are on here. In my humble opinion, he's the only late night talk show worth watching any more. His bits are well-crafted, but do make a lot of 80s and 90s references. If you remember Carson on the air, you probably were too old to get on that 80s/90s pop culture bandwagon.

His charisma is unparalleled, he has a much greater optimism toward the world than everyone else's perennial favorite, Letterman. He will be the next late-night legend.

"He’s the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation." There is no Carson or closest to Carson. And that is not a knock against any late night host. It's a simple fact that TV production, expectations and performance is what it is now. The days of Johnny Carson are gone, and that's ok. No late night show will ever be that kind of event, and no one should have the pressure of trying to be "the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation".

Leno stole the show back from Conan?? What the F?? I don't like Leno, but that's a bunch of bull shiwawa. Leno VOLUNTARILY agreed to move to the 10 p.m. slot – five years ahead of time! – so that Conan could have the Tonight Show. Then, it was NBC, NOT LENO, who told Conan he was being moved to midnight and told Leno he would move back to 11:35 for a half hour show. Leno had NOTHING to do with those decisions... he just went along for the ride because he's been a loyal soldiers for over 20 years to NBC. Again, I'm not a fan of his or the show's, this nonsense about Leno ruining Conan is ridicuous. Conan QUIT because he didn't want to move to midnight like NBC told him he would. Period.

    1) Jay Leno ALWAYS wins his time slot. So, no one should be in a rush to replace him until he chooses to go.
If you don't like him..don't watch him. Apparently, he doesn't need you anyway.
    2) Fallon can be entertaining, but he's getting pretty full of himself. And, his songs/routines are making him a lil bit like a one trick pony. Plus, he's everywhere...TOO much exposure never works out well for celebs over the long run.
    3) The reason the shows are taped in LA is because stars are more readily available there. Letterman is already here getting limited # of stars in NY. If they taped both shows here they would be splitting the limited guests. Now, when a star is in NY they are on every NY show and say the same thing over and over. No need to tune in at night when we've seen them on Kelly & Michael, Rachel Ray, Today Show and/or GMA.
    4) Leno appeals to all people. He may knock Repubs but he also knocks Obama and Libs. He's not constantly so far to left that he turns everyone else off.

Jimmy fallon sucks. He sucked on snl he sucks as a host. He is a joke. He would kill the tonight show

    March 20, 2013 at 11:58 pm | Report abuse |

Why does Leno always win his time slot? Because he's the BEST! He's better than Letterman. He's better than that Kimmel joke. He's better than Conan (obviously). And he's better than Fallon. If thet dump Jay for Fallon, the show will tank again like it did with Conan. They will beg Jay to come back again, and he'll give them the big bird.

Couldn't be any worse than Jay Leno.

What was CNN thinking with that Jake Tapper hire? Must have been the same guy that hired Lou Dobbs.

too bad he doesn't show any of that loyalty to his own wife. he's been cheating on her for years, and blames her for their infertility troubles. that super-nice act of his is just that–an act.

I think Jimmy Fallon is really funny, and has a pretty decent voice, too. But you are right, he will never be another Johnny Carson. They broke the mold when Johnny died.

Fallon can be funny. Not as funny Carson though. They indeed broke the mold with him.
