'Great Gatsby' to open Cannes Film Festival

This year's Cannes film festival will swing open in '20s style.

Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" has been selected to begin the festivities for the 66th edition.

The project, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, could become one of summer's biggest events when it has its American release on May 10. (You have seen the trailer, right? Better yet, consider the source material!)

"The Great Gatsby" will then debut at the film festival five days later on May 15.

This won't be the first time Cannes has screened a film in 3-D, as it previously did that with 2009's "Up." Luhrmann isn't a stranger to the festival, either, as his 2001 movie "Moulin Rouge!" opened that year's fest.

For Luhrmann, opening at Cannes has a special significance for both his film and its story.

“It is a great honor for all those who have worked on ‘The Great Gatsby’ to open the Cannes Film Festival," Luhrmann said in a statement. "F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away.”

Cannes will run from May 15 - 26, and will be judged by this year's special guest judge and head of jury, Steven Spielberg.

I just bought a great Ariel Atom from having earned $9356 this month and would you believe, $10k this past-month. This is really the most-comfortable work I have ever had. I began this 6 months ago and right away was bringing in more than $83 per/h. This is what I do, Rich45.C0M____

3D, 2D, great or otherwise, I just want to see Carey Mulligan’s gatsbys up on the big screen. She plays a flapper, for godsake, so let us see her flapjacks flapping around all flippity floppity.

Loved the original, but this one looks lame. Who thought that DiCaprio was fit to follow Redford in the lead?

And what's up with the 3-D??? Not like this is an action flick or anything...

There is nothing wrong with 3D in films like this. 3D is not just meant for action and "in-you-face" things.
It can give the audience a sense of being in the film which helps pull the viewer into the film.

Plus, the B( . )( . )BS just leap off the screen in 3D films, giving the impression that you can reach out and touch them (with apologies to the woman sitting in front of you).
