Justin Bieber hosts 'SNL': What's the verdict?

Justin Bieber's Grammys night live-stream may have been a bust, but at least his "Saturday Night Live" appearance passed muster. OK, well, with Beliebers, at least.

The 18-year-old hosted Saturday's show, riffing on some of February's biggest celebrations: Black History Month, and Valentine's Day.

Entertainment Weekly critiqued that Biebs "seemed most in his element when he was flirty with the camera for the teens at home." Perhaps as a result of that, "it’s unlikely he gained any more adult fans," EW went on. "While Bieber was in almost every sketch – and, to his credit, wasn’t noticeably reading cue cards – anyone hoping he would follow in the path of another Justin [read: frequent host Timberlake] was surely disappointed."

But the episode wasn't without its highlights, which, funnily enough, all had to do with making fun of Bieber. In a sketch with Jason Sudeikis in which the "SNL" vet played a new head of security whose protection plan included a crew of decoy Biebers, all the usual jokes were used: his preference for saying "swaggy," the wisecracks that he looks like a girl, the high-pitched voice thing.

There was also a skit with Vanessa Bayer playing Miley Cyrus and Bieber the president of her fan club. Once again, he kept himself as the butt of the joke:

"I also heard he got busted for smoking weed and he's really sorry about it and that people make mistakes and that he's never going to do it again," Bieber said, while in character. ("Yeah right! Me too!" crowed Bayer's Cyrus.)

The Huffington Post's Mike Ryan wasn't impressed, though, saying in his review that the idea of Bieber dissing Bieber had a "false humility."

"Even when Bieber is not playing Justin Bieber, everything is still about Justin Bieber. Bieber, playing a character who hates Justin Bieber, is smug," Ryan said. "His fans love it because it portrays Bieber as 'humble' - which he's well aware of - but, in reality, it just gives Justin Bieber the opportunity to talk about Justin Bieber."

How well do you think Bieber did as "SNL" host?

He was stupid. I feel like the entire episode was like promoting him almost. He thinks he's awesome showing his abs, sagging down to his knees and singing all the freaking time. I can't stand him. Even the part where he pretends to be miley cyrus' biggest fan and talks about himself saying "I heard he is out partying and smoking pot and said he was sorry and he makes mistakes." and then everyone cheered....so dumb

He was absolutely shiiiiT! I agree with the ppls comments below – he is totally obnoxious and up his own ass. His 'talent' is that he can keep in tune and is cute – that cuteness won't last much longer and then we have another 20 somethin drug addict loser who still thinks hes every teen girls dream. Vomit.

Beiber's 15 minutes of fame is soon to be over. Lip syncing concerts, thug hip hop clothes, and a baby voice will ony carry him so far. Usher is already out looking for new acts. I'm sure George Michael, Elton John and others will let him tour a bit with them, and then it's over.

Predictable, therefore not funny. Stick to singing kid while you can. When your current 10-year old girl fans grow up they'll be too old for you to be their idol. By the time the next generation of kiddies come up you'll be too old to be their idol. Face it, you have some talent but you really are just surviving on infatuated little girls.

I'm 72 and thought he did a great job. It is fun watching him grow and develop as an entertainer. Read the Rolling Stone review – they got it right and the fact that the over-the-hill Grammys missed the biggest star on the planet currently.

Seriously all? I too am from the old school SNL, and I thought he did a great job! I laughed a lot! I really don't care for the Beib (as I am an ol fart), but he's the 'thing' today – and I wanted to see how he would do. I honestly thought he did a great job! It's easy to criticise from our point of view. I would suck miserably to do that... AND LIVE!!!

Wait, wrong post to comment on, but anyway, that's why he's a singer and not an actor. And seriously, would you not laugh if somebody started screaming "HE SAID GLICE REMEMBER?" In your face? Thought so.
