Seagal to lead school shooting response exercise

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s team will participate in a simulated school shooting as a training exercise, with help from a special celebrity guest, according to a statement.

Along with instructors, actor Steven Seagal will lead the simulation, to take place in the Arizona county on Saturday, February 9.

Seagal, who has made a name for himself headlining action movies such as “Above the Law” and Under Seige,” will help educate 40 armed volunteers on room-entry tactics and hand-to-hand tactics, the statement says.

Since January, Arpaio, known for his tough stance on undocumented immigrants, has worked to put together what the statement refers to as a posse program to patrol the areas surrounding schools.

Seagal was featured in "Steven Seagal: Lawman" which according to IMDB followed his "adventures as a fully-commissioned deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana."

this man earned his own money, this man has & is doing something positive for all of us, this man never seems to stop getting involved with a new project. did he put on a few pounds?, so what! it isn't from "welfare" or any other financial assistance that we pay tax for.. I think he'd make a great leader, I'd vote him in as US President

I think it is great that Steven Segal and that Sheriff, ran that drill, But I would like to know about the rest of the at risk schools? I mean I think Well I have an idea, we have Solders returning and with time left to serve. We call them Hero's why cant we let our young Men and Women Who have combat experience serve so stateside duty time guarding our children and their's Cause the children of our hero's go to the same stateside schools as everyone elses, Just an Idea, I mean if they can fight battles and protect base camps I feel sure They are more than qualified too secure a campus of kids. Anyway like I said what about the other schools that the actor did not visit?

This is hilarious... From my own time in the entertainment industry, I learned that Steven Seagal has two (well, three, if you count himself) obsessions: guns and exotic animals... While shooting a movie in the Balkans, Seagal purchased a giant snake, which, after escaping into the walls if his hotel room, provoked Seagal to respond by emptying several high-capacity clips into said walls, causing some thousands in damages... I'm glad this is the guy leading the charge, aren't you?

I just hope that he doesn't sit on anyone. If you have seen him in person than you know he weighs over 900 lbs. And his little group of midget cops, what people on the street call a passe I believe, that act as his bodyguards have been known to hold people so that he can break wind toward them. When you live on bokchoy, sardines and marshmallow topping, your body can create a ferocoius odor.

Folks, it's just another publicity stunt of Sheriff Arpaio. He has to keep his name in the media somehow, and this issue of protecting school children came up and just one more issue to link his name to. As far as Seagal goes, this is no laughing matter to bring in a has-been Hollywood stuntman to show the ropes of what? Theatrics?

Of course none of us would say any of the "funny" stuff within his arm's reach but I do respect him for what he has done over the years except for acting, and of course acting. Oh and then there's acting... I'm remebering something bad he did involving his wife, cheating with the babysitter or something. That greatly lessened my respect.

Have any of the people blasting Seagal on being an "actor" actually looked into his past and his credentials? Have you ever observed his incredible control of a firearm or his use of the human body for or against another person? The man is incredibly skilled, well educated in his craft, and has trained police officers for years with great success. His shooting and his martial arts skills are in no way acting. Acting just made him a lot of money with real life skills.

Whether you like him or not as an actor, it is not his acting that is involved in all this training. He sincerely cares about protecting the public and improving those around him to do the same. By offering his expertise, he is actually contributing something concrete to a real problem with many faces. He's doing SOMETHING, which most people cannot claim. He is not simply blasting others online and basing his objections on uninformed opinions.

Do some research on the man. Look at his training. Look at his skills. Observe his capabilities with some objectivity and you may come away thankful people like him are around to help those of us who rely on law enforcement officers to provide a measure of safety in our communities. And maybe, just maybe, someone whose life he has improved through training will be around in the event one of YOUR family members or friends is in a situation where force is absolutely required to eliminate a threat or stop an act of violence before another life is lost.

To Steven, thank you. I sincerely appreciate your contribution to a societal problem and I hope only the best for those civilians and officers fortunate enough to receive your assistance.

Seagal has a completely failed movie career and life. This is just something else he is trying with his good buddy, Sheriff Joe, to try to keep his name in the media.
His credibility as a "Law Enforcement Expert" took a major tumble when he crashed into and wrecked the wrong house in trying to carry out a warrant. The ones he wanted were in a nearby house and they got away as soon as he crashed into the other one.

Seagal is one of those celebrity deputies a lot of departments have. The problem is he believes he really is the be-all and end-all of law enforcement. Given the blatant disregard for the 4th and 5th Amendments he has demonstrated on his "reality show" I would be surprised if his arrests resulted in any convictions that were not overturned on initial appeal.

All schools should have had armed police/guards from day one or at least since Columbine. Wished a guard could of pumped evil Adam Lanza with a round to stop or limit the carnage.

    • joe

Columbine did have an armed police officer at the school. When faced with overwhelming firepower & the element of surprise an armed guard isn't much use.

      February 7, 2013 at 10:04 am | Report abuse |
    • rbnlegend

An armed guard can be useful, but it depends on the guard, his ability to comminicate, his training, and his skill with his weapon. At columbine, the guard couldn't make the shot at the range he had, and had to choose between communicating and engaging. At that time, the by the book response was to not engage, to contain the scene and set up a full response. That was incredibly time consuming, and by the time command centers were established and perimiters closed down, the event was essentially over. The book has changed, and guards are equipped with radios or cell phones, such that they can engage the attacker much more quickly, if they are in a position to do so.

      February 7, 2013 at 10:50 am | Report abuse |
    • Pete

The Columbine massacre wasn't just a school shooting. It was a full-on assault with bombs and guns. An armed security guard had little chance of taking them out considering they were wearing vests and body armor. Lanza was also wearing protection.

And the cost of these semi-useful guards is another consideration.

Inviting a celebrity guest to an exercise of this importance goes to show that Sheriff Joe is nothing but a publicity hound and will stop at nothing to see his name in the news . We want to thank Steven Segal and every other sheriff deputy, police officer, fire fighter, EMT, and educato in there daily efforts in protecting our children. These brave men and women do all they can every day without asking for anything. Feeding into Sheriff Joe's narsisstic behavior is wrong and possibly dangerous, We pray this is not the case.

Seagal's celebrity really has nothing to do with this.

And if you read the article you would see he is not interacting with children, he is teaching first responder's offensive and defensive tactics when entering a school with an attacker.
And why him? Seagal has been an acknowledged firearms teacher and street defense tactics for over 10 years! He has taught numerous classes to law enforcement and security people. Say what you want about his acting and quality of movies but you'd certainly want to have first responders for your children trained by someone who knows what they are doing.

Steven Seagal is a shill! This lunatic uses his celebrity notoriety to rape women he hires in his private jet and wedges his way into Arizona Sheriff's political circle and he is known in Scottsdale gun stores to buy up guns using his agent. What a joker.

When Steven Segal does a push-up, he is actually pushing the world away (because that is physics).

I think fishsticks and tater tots for lunch every day would make me happier. I'm in 8th grade. Do I get a vote? I vote for that and chocolate pudding for desert. And more computer classes.

I have no clue if he has skills to teach in these situations, so I will not comment if he is the right person for the job. I do know that I don't think this should be televised, to show what teachers may do in these situations just give the other team game film to study.

To play devil's advocate here. I drive past a grade school on the way to take my kids to high school every day. In fact, I drive past this school a few times a day, going in and out of my neighborhood. At various time, the play ground next to the school is filled with kids on recess. I can't help but think he easy it would be for some sick guy with a gun to either drive by or just park on the street and start shooting kids. With a high capacity semi auto, he could probably shoot a dozen kids before speeding away. What good would any kind of armed guard or "posse" on the premise do? By the time they even came out to react, the damage would be done. Let's be careful to not over-react to perceived dangers, but also to imagine that they can only take one form. In a country where a person can put a rifle or handgun in a car and drive past a school, or a grocery store parking lot, or a college campus, there is very little anyone can do to stop him if he is sick enough to want to kill people. Protecting entry points and guarding kids once they are in school is fine, but it presumes that this is the only known threat. We are a nation bloated with personally owned firearms, and as long as there are sick people with guns, tragedies will happen. It reminds me of a general who was quoted as saying in reaction to 911 "What are we supposed to do? Put anti aircraft guns on sky scrapers??" This action on the part of this community may make people feel safer, but it is naive in its singular focus.

You can secure the property (school) like private schools in other countries, a wall surrounding the school plus a couple of security guys with radios in the main entrance of the school and a Police car in the parking lot. You can not access the school unless you have an appointment or you are a student. Problem solved.

The great thing about america is that we are a trusting society.

You can walk into any police station and be able to shoot 4 or 5 cops before anyone is able to pull out a gun and respond. That is the best thing about having a gun it is used to kill fast. It is also the worst thing about living in a trusting society.

If you have the desire to kill, nothing is going to stop you no matter what people do to prepare for it.

It would be better if all school faculty had to attend 2 years of Steven Seagal approved training in how to kick the ever living shizzle out of someone old-school akido style, breaking their arm backward in the process. Not only would that deter would-be gunman from poking around schools, but it would deter would-be tough guy school kids from mockig/taunting/abusing teachers... Imagine little johnny clowning on the chunky girls track coach, and then walking around with a full arm cast for the next 5 months as a badge of stupidity. Teach a555 kicking Steven. We need you.

Steven Seagal, with overtly angry sheriff; shows how to protect kids from immigrant attacks and Non-American born presidents. Then he will lead Arpaio's posse off into the sunset with Mexican scalps and Michele's new hairdo. Then the acid will wear off and he will meltdown into a has been action star with very dubious credentials....

According to sources, he will also teach the staff to hang onto a helicopter while shooting at the bad guys, jump off a three-story building into a dumpster, and drive on two wheels, lol.

Cherubino, I am with you! Since when did the celebrities start running this country?
Oh, wait, that is right: it started in the Clinton era, went on hold for eight years, and now has been becoming the true power behind the "throne for the past four years.
    Hmmm?

I don't understand this. The internet is supposed to make more information available to everyone. It is supposed to make humanity as a whole more intelligent. Yet we still have these obvious dimwits who know nothing about the world around them other than what the hear on Rush Limbaugh. Seriously, some of you whackos should move to a Libertarian paradise like Somalia.

Why do we need (no disrespect) Steven Seagal to instruct volunteers? Don't we have police and military experts for that? He's not a cop, he just plays one on TV! I love the guy but this is not right....

He is a "cop" in my state of Louisiana. He worked for many many years with the Jefferson Parish Police Department. I believe he will be an asset to the police officers in Arizona due to his experience and training.

Actually he has been a cop in jefferson parish, la. for over twenty years now. He's also an expert marksman and a martial arts expert. Sounds to me like a good person to have involved with it.
