All fruit diet lands Ashton Kutcher in the hospital

Ashton Kutcher might think twice before trying method acting again.

While preparing to play Steve Jobs in Joshua Michael Stern’s biopic, “Jobs,” the actor said he adopted the late Apple co-founder’s fruit-only diet.

“First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to like severe issues,” Kutcher said after the “Jobs” screening at the Sundance Film Festival, via USA Today. “I went to the hospital like two days before we started shooting the movie. I was like doubled over in pain. My pancreas levels were completely out of whack.”

In 2004, Jobs announced that he was being treated for pancreatic cancer.

In addition to eating like the tech titan, Kutcher said he watched 100 hours of footage to capture his walk and talk, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Josh Gad stars opposite Kutcher in the biopic, which is due out on April 19, as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Undeniably consider that which you stated. Your favourite justification seemed to be at the net the simplest factor to understand of. I say to you, I certainly get irked while people consider worries that they plainly don't understand about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest as well as defined out the entire thing without having side effect , other people could take a signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thanks

Somewhere, someone has bet alot of money on this movie (I am not sure why). Wouldn't you think that before your lead actor adopted some "whacky" diet, you would have it checked with a doctor? Why risk the movie ?? The diet might have worked for Jobs since he was dying of something . The 'all fruit' diet for Jobs might have been specific to his unique cancer situation. But hey; he is only an actor, right !

I don't know the timeline of when he adopted this diet compared to when he was diagnosed but there may even be an association with the cancer. Cancer is unchecked cell growth, I wonder if it's a good idea to stress the very organ which is affected by working it hard to produce insane amounts of a particular hormone such as insulin. It seems the right way to not stress the pancreas is to eat well rounded meals low in fat and animal protein (because the pancreas secretes the majority of the enzymes necessary to digest these) with very careful blood glucose monitoring to reduce the output of glucagon and insulin from the pancreas. But then again maybe it wouldn't help at all.

I think all Jobs-worshiping luddites should go on an all-fruit diet. Especially those who write about computer issues for mainstream media. We're so funny. The guy that invents the iPad dies and it's like the crucifiction. The guy who invents the Etch-A-Sketch, (same device, if you really think about it's useful capabilities), dies and there's hardly a mention.

"itchy"? you say you juiced alot of "stuff" (perhaps it was poison ivy, since, as you said, the doctors spent 7 days flushing "ivy" out of your system? and, of course, there is the choice of your screen name, "itchy".) you said you increased your "pancreas levels"... of or to what? ("my pancreas levels were so high that the doctors never saw a number like that before"). were they physically high on illicit substances? did they contain untold amounts of kryptonite? or were they so high up on your body in a physical sense they interfered with your ability to write coherently? and if ashton's work as an actor causes you physical pain, you should try changing the channel or avoiding following his career all together. good luck with all that. i hear tom cruise could use a few more fans, if he doesn't make you lactose intolerant or allergic to philodendrons.

Hmmm... Lots of fruit, caused Pancreas problems in Ashton Kutcher. Steven Jobs, ate only fruit, and got Pancreatic cancer. Both had a Pancreas in common. I wonder if there is something in the fruit that can cause pancreas problems? Maybe it's not the fruit it's self, but the chems they spray on the fruit before harvesting? Regular folks that eat a normal amount of fruit don't get the pancreas problems because they stay below the level that causes problems. Hmmmm... I wonder what they are spraying on that fruit?

It's the sugar overload from eating all fruit. The pancreas is what deals with sugar in the bloodstream. In a regular diet, even if you are eating a lot of fruit, you are also eating fats, proteins, fiber, etc. to slow down the amount of sugar hitting your bloodstream at one time.

Damie, Nicola, Seola, et al: Fad diets like Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, Mediterranean, all-fruit, etc. are pretty much all a waste of time and/or dangerous. Read "The China Study," by Dr. T. Colin Campbell. It's not another fad diet – it's a book that describes the largest, most comprehensive study of nutrition ever done. Read it, and you'll know what to eat to maximize your health. In a nutshell, it's this: eat more whole organic plant foods, and little or no processed foods or animal protein (fish, fowl, beef, dairy). It's very simple, falling-down easy to implement, and will greatly decrease your odds of getting the "diseases of affluence": cancer, heart disease, stroke, obesity, osteoporosis, auto-immune disease, (including arthritis, gout, shingles, etc.), or dementia (Alzheimers).

It's not a fad or short-term way of eating – it's how you should eat all the time, for the rest of your life. It's healthy, it's natural, it's scientifically proven, and it works.

Oh alright. The 80 pounds I lost and kept off on an Atkins-style diet is actually imaginary then. It was all just a waste of time.

Everybody is different. There isn't a "simple" answer. Some people's physiology can handle starches and sugars without it resulting in significant fat storage, or any at all. Others will convert huge majorities of carbohydrates into lipids.

Personally, I don't get ANY energy boost from eating carbohydrates. If I eat a meal high in protein and good fats however, I can really feel the difference.

Sounds like a fad diet to me. None of the "diets" you mentioned (Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers) really reach the level of fad. They have been around a long time and result in weight loss. Losing weight is not the problem. Maintaining the loss is the problem. Putting severe restrictions on what you eat only results in the urge to eat.

Sorry, but Weight Watchers is not a fad. It's regular food, with the emphasis on the healthy ones, in appropriate portions. Lots of pure water too. Weight Watchers is less a fad diet than eating properly for life with portion control.

Hello?!...it's called a "balanced" diet for a reason...our bodies must have fruits, vegetables, proteins (doesn't have to be from meat), grains, dairy, water and some fats...our bodies need vitamins and minerals found in all the food groups...one can not survive on one food group alone (organic or not), because our bodies are not made from one element alone...just ask Steve Jobs...

He probably went on it not just to experience what jobs did, but probably also to lose weight as jobs had cancer. i think the striking component of this article is that the all fruit diet made ashton have increased pancreatic levels. Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer. The correlation is interesting.

Eating only fruit, which is the sugar fructose, taxes the pancreas as it has to produce lots of the insulin hormone to metabolize the sugar. It's gets over loaded and either can't keep up with metabolizing an overabundance of glucose or it just shuts down, both lead to diabetes. Additionally, an excess of insulin causes the body to store fat. His doctor probably explained the process and Kutcher translated it to "pancreas is out of whack." I wonder if he found this diet on the internet, it seems a doctor wouldn't suggest that diet. Maybe the doc suggested a fruit diet for a short timer like 2 days. People are notorious for not following doctor's orders.

As far as Atkins goes, it gets a bad rap because on the surface it seems like an all meat diet, people assume you only eat meat and salad. In fact, you eat meats and green veggies only the for the first 2 weeks to jump start the metabolism. Then you add other foods one at a time like additional vegetables, whole grains, berries, fruits, nuts and different potions of meats. Even a desert if it doesn't affect your insulin too much. When you add a food to your diet one at a time, you watch to see what your weight does, if it goes up, you back off on that food. If your weight doesn't change, you're OK eating that, if your weight goes down, you can add a little more of that food. Everyone id different so you have to find what works for you. Eventually you build well rounded healthy meals that fill you up as opposed to eating a low calorie meal. The purpose of the program is to develop permanent, well rounded healthy eating habits for life, not constant starvation diets.

    This is how Atkins died...
"On April 8, 2003, at age 72, Dr. Atkins slipped on the ice while walking to work, hitting his head and causing bleeding around his brain. He lost consciousness on the way to the hospital, where he spent two weeks in intensive care. His body deteriorated rapidly and he suffered massive organ failure. During this time, his body apparently retained an enormous amount of fluid, and his weight at death was recorded at 258 pounds. His death certificate states that the cause of death was "blunt impact injury of head with epidural hematoma". He was bloated because of constant IV fluids.

People who are already physically fit and have healthy eating habits don't need Atkins. Those of us like me, who have crappy eating habits, are sensitive to glucose and unhealthy, would benefit. I lost 50lbs on Atkins and felt great, my BP and cholesterol went down. Then I totally blew it off and gained 30 back, BP and cholesterol went back up. Had I stuck to it I'd be in much better shape. The South Beach diet seems to appeal to people more.

Anyway, it's about healthy well rounded meals and being active. Not sure what Kutcher was thinking...

I agree Damie the Atkins diet has such a bad press but it works and goes back to nature..berries meat fruit and veg in their purest form. People just slag off the first two weeks as they think its like that all the time and its not. Read about the Dukan Diet – its the same as Atkins!!!!!!! But everyone raves about that!!

Except part of his autopsy report lists he had several heart problems, including an enlarged heart and heart disease. It has also been noted that if the heart wasn't working as efficiently, then the blood itself was thicker – leading to a problem with the intake of fluids through the IV. Complete picture dear.

There is a big difference between eating ONLY fruit and eating a fruit based diet. This is where Ashton went wrong. I've eaten a fruit based diet for over 9 years now and have regular blood tests and physicals to ensure I am getting proper nutrition. ( I live in Canada so they're covered) I am in complete optimal health and have no issues with my pancreas. There are different fructose levels in all fruits and you need to know them. Vegetables are KEY to balancing sugar levels. I also eat nuts/seeds/potatoes/squash/even grains. Fruit is about 50% of my diet and I usually consume vegetables in tandem with fruit. This is vital! Hate to see the miracle of a fruit based diet given a bad rep when it is just poorly executed. Done right this life style is amazing!

    • Blake

You gained weight back because you were on a "diet" and diets don't work. Atkins wrote 17 books on the same subject (explain that?) and while he did die from slipping on ice, he had suffered from a heart attack the previous year due to his colesterol levels being off the charts and clogged arteries. Atkins' diet is the most destructive I have ever read about. I am a certified fitness trainer and the only thing that works to lose weight is the 1-2-3 approach (1 part fat, 2 parts protein and three parts carbohydrates) and a regular exercise routine. Carbohydrates are mandatory for proper nutrition and because that is our energy source to be able to then burn fatty acids, any "diet" that crashes your system is dangerous. People become overweight by not only eating too many calories, but the wrong kind of calories. The simple logic is calories in vs calories out. People eat too much food at one time and always pick up just that one cookie or piece of cake. No wonder we have an obesity problem. People have no self-control. I can't tell you how many times at work I hear, "I shouldn't be eating this, but...." That is the problem and diets are not the solution.

all I really wanted to know was why this diet was bad? What exactly was it that caused him pain? I'd bet the cause was more related to gmo's or the pesticides they use on the fruits than the actual fruits themselves. If your entire diet is fruit you would be ingesting ALOT more pesticides compared to a person who only eats 1 or 2 fruits a day- even if it is labeled organic it still may be a gmo. Anyway it would have been nice to hear an explanation as to why this diet caused him pain.

"it would have been nice to hear an explanation as to why this diet caused him pain."

It was right there in the article:

"My pancreas levels were completely out of whack."

The pancrease secretes insulin to process sugars. He ate too much fruit, thereby ingesting too much sugar, causing his pancreas to go into overdrive. Nice conspiracy theory you have there, unfortunately (like nearly all conspiracy theories) it isn't rooted in reality.

To the moron who said vegans are morons. Ok first and foremost it's not about DIET to vegans, it's about not wanting to eat slaughtered animals. True vegans are doing it for compassion for animals. And yes, it is heallthy. I'm not even going to start to explain it though. Read up yourself. I've been vegan for 4 years now and i am healthier and stronger than i ever was in the past when i used to eat a 'balanced diet' like the one you suggested.

I don't think vegans are "morons", but I think it's pretty clear they're not eating optimally from a nutrition standpoint.

Humans have evolved to be omnivorous. We have teeth that can handle meat and vegetable matter. Same for our digestive system. If you look at herbivores or carnivores, they have very different systems.

If someone wants to be a vegan, that's fine with me. It really doesn't impact me one way or the other. But it's trickier to stay healthy by being herbivorous, because that's not how our bodies are evolved to work.

red meat should be a once in a blue moon treat, same as pork. You get way more nutrient from vegetables and fruit then you get from red meat, and turkey has more protein.

we are omnivores = meats and plants
we are not herbivores = plants only
we are not carnivores = meats only.
ENJOY A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING AND YOULL BE FINE. REMEMBER MODERATION IS KEY.
    1) if ya want something sweet, go for it. (cookie, candy, fruit, pastry, cake...)
    2) if ya want something fatty, go for it (cheese, fired foods, creamy sauces and dairies....)
    3) if ya want something boring, go for it (rice cakes, wasa crakers, plain lowfat yogurt, rolled oats...
    JUST DO IT IN MODERATION!!!!!! = 1,2 & 3
NEVER STRESS OUT OVER INDULGING IN A LITTLE SOMETHING FUN AND DECADENT

As long as you get the protiens needed in legumes, etc, you will be fine. My neice is vegan and just gave birth to a healthy 9 lb boy. Our culture eats far too much meat – much more than evolution set us up for. Well, our culture just eats too much – period, and without the exercise our ancestors got from the hard work they did growing & catching thier own food.

I agree, and disagree.... There are many genetic types among us. Some do best with meat, some veg, some both. I'd love to go veg but last time I tried with the help of a dietician I ended up in the hospital. My body needs meat and can't handle legumes, especially soy as it throws off the old thyroid too much. Anyway – we come from different parts of the planet and over long periods of time each person has dna suited to where their people lived. It's nature. What matters is that we find what works for us and hopefully when we do need to eat meat, we buy the most humanely raised meat we possibly can, organic, grass fed, pastured not caged. Never veal or other cruel meats. Free range hormone free chicken and their eggs. Not everyone has to be categorized as either a kind veg or a cruel meat eater, and not all vegetarians are weak. I think it's a strong thing to resist meat if your body can handle that. I'm a bit envious. But veg folk please remember not all of us have the dna that allows that choice...and some of us are taking the most ethical path we can while still eating meat.

Vegetables I can tolerate, but meat I have zero problems with it. I can feel up on meats and never worry about any stomach problems or pain, and have full energy. My dad is A blood type, and he thrives on fruits and vegetables, but he does eat meat, but you can't tell he is in pain after eating it. And I hate pasta and cakes. Adaptation, n.: Any alteration in the structure or function of an organism or any of its parts that results from natural selection and by which the organism becomes better fitted to survive and multiply in its environment. (Dictionary.com)

Human beings have digestive systems, ranging from the ability to absorb nutrients from animals at the 'south' end of the alimentary canal (a.k.a. digestive tract) to the tearing, ripping, grinding teeth at the other, that are adaptations to a diet consisting of a variety of foods, including... MEAT!!! The silliness that insists that a vegetarian (or vegan) diet is somehow better for you ignores evolution, adaptation based on wishful thinking. Philosophies and ideologies based on wishful thinking are right about as much as a broken clock, and for the exact same reason.

Going all veggie in the diet means you will be missing certain nutrients and chemicals essential to good health. The fact that we are optimized to eat meat should be the first, biggest, and most obvious clue that eating meat is GOOD FOR YOU. Trying to force someone (yourself for example) to eat a diet for which you are not optimized will result in sub-optimal health and performance. The notion is as absurd as suggesting that because oxygen is good and necessary and hydrogen is a flammable gas means that instead of breathing air and drinking water, that we should be breathing only diatomic oxygen molecules, (O2) and not hydrogen gas (H2). Doing this would work well enough until your blood reached oxygen toxicity, after probably a few seconds or maybe a minute or two or three, or normal respiratory drive is lost, and you pass out.

Vegetarianism is the diet of the future like my A S S is the diet of the future.

A BALANCED DIET is the best thing for you. "All of this" and "none of that" will kill you.

All fruit? that's all fructose – sugar – and lots of calories. Your pancreas will go beserk and you will end up diabetic.

Might as well do the all doughnut diet.

No, that was not a suggestion.

I guess we know what killed Steve Jobs – stupidity.

You should as "stupid" as Steve Jobs was!
Ashton Kutcher is not very bright at all...wow...what a complete imb ecile! He can't put a sentence together and then he thinks that eating like Jobs will make him portray the late genius well?
I'm sure that Jobs did not just eat fruit. He wouldn't have survived as long as he did. His only problem was that he delayed treatment. He had a type of pancreatic cancer that could have been put in remission. It's too bad...he put his company above his life...unfortunately, too many people do that and they find out a bit too late that it was totally brainless to do that!
Couldn't they have found someone with a little bit more intelligence to portray Jobs than this absolute chimpanzee...Kutcher?

It's method acting. He was trying to get into the same mindset and mannerisms as Steve Jobs. Actors do this type of thing all the time; Heath Ledger, for example, did a lot to mentally prepare himself for his role as The Joker. Still, I think that next time Kutcher may look into something like an All X Diet before attempting it.

What made him think this was a good idea? The guy had pancreatic cancer (Ok, not the usual most deadly kind) and refused conventional treatment until it was too late. Jobs had a great brain for computers/tech but not much for biological sciences.

As long as the focus is on weight loss at any cost and the pursuit of ever-more-unattainable thinness, this kind of thing will keep happening. The focus needs to be on health, regardless of how you look. In the end, we'll all be much healthier when we're not beating ourselves up for failing to look like an airbrushed magazine cover.
