It's official: Abrams to direct new 'Star Wars' film

This is the director they were looking for.

J.J. Abrams will direct the next "Star Wars" movie installment, Walt Disney Studios announced late Friday night.

The movie is the franchise's first since Disney agreed to acquire Lucasfilm, George Lucas'  company that produced the first six "Star Wars" movies.

Abrams has experience with movies in blockbuster franchises. He directed the 2009 "Star Trek" movie and his company, Bad Robot, produced "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol," the 2011 movie in that franchise.

"I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller," said George Lucas, who created the Star Wars franchise, in a statement released by Walt Disney Studios. "He's an ideal choice to direct the new 'Star Wars' film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."

In addition to his film work, Abrams has a long resume on TV. He created "Felicity," "Alias," "Lost" and "Fringe," among others. Abrams and producing partner Bryan Burk will produce "Star Wars: Episode VII" along with Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, Disney said.

"To be a part of the next chapter of the 'Star Wars saga' . . . is an absolute honor," Abrams said. "I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."

Michael Arndt will write the screenplay, according to Disney.

Hey another generic Sci-fi action movie with no plot but lots of action for the lowest common denominator. Mike Bay and J.J. giving Rifftrax something to work with for years to come.

On the one hand, Lens Flare!

On the other hand, well... at least it isn't George Lucas.

BTW, has anyone else here noticed how much J.J. looks like that short, dorky-looking roommate of Sheldon's on Big Bang Theory?

For all you haters out there, when Star Wars first appeared (and became a success), Lucas said he was going to do three trilogies. By Return of the Jedi, he changed to say he would just do two. It'll be interesting to see where the new story goes – and whether it (despite Disney) preserves the darkness that was originally supposed to be in Return...

It will be interesting to see where the trilogy goes. A likely direction is that it picks up with the end of Jedi. Then goes through Leah discovering her powers but turning to the dark side. That would make the most sense since going back before Episode 1 would be really tough. It would though allow them to go back to the early days of Yoda and the beginnings of the force.

It will be exciting no matter what direction it goes.

Acually, Lucas originally talked about 12 movies, which turned to 9 when the digitally remastered VHS set came out mid 90's and turned to only 6 movies when the prequel trilogy was announced a couple of years later. Needless to say, I am a happy nerd.

I've loved just about everything Abrams has touched, from Fringe to Star Trek. I hope he ca breathe new life into Star Wars, because the last few installments were uninspiring.

Cool! Ihope that like Star Trek, Fringe, and Lost the next Star War Film with have time travel in the story line! I always thought that Time Travel to the distant past was the reason why there are humans that exits a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Yeah! That Dalorean in back to the future was pretty sweet! Especially when it was flying. Just outfit it with some guns and I can totally see it taking out Star Wars type fighters! I don;t know if Abrams can secure the rights to do a cross over like that but man can you imagine!! Nerdgasm!!!!!

Star Wars has _always_ been a kids movie. Since jump it made more money in action figures, toys, lunchboxes and others kids stuff then actual ticket sales. Empire was the anomaly. Ewoks, Jar Jar, Greedo Firing First – all were corrections Lucas imposed to bring it back down to his target younger audience.

I don't think Lucas ever did well trying to balance those competing themes. I mean – Indy 4? C'mon now.

While I tend to dislike Disney in principle – they've had decades perfecting movies that appeal to both Kids _and_ adults. One could argue this isn't saying much, but I think Disney will handle it better than him. From what I've seen of interviews, Lucas always seemed bitter toward the adult fans of the franchise. Abrams, on the other hand, has a positive view of hard-core fans, having been one himself.

  93. he

Based on JJ's ability to weave stories togehter over itme, he should do great with the Star Wars trilogy. The only time he wavered with Alias and Lost was when he did not have an ending. He knows he has a finaility in that there will noly be three movies. Also, he will need to draw on his ability to weave the psychological nature of a story together to journey back to the original message of good versus evil from the original trilogy.

This fellow took Star Trek and played with it like a toddler playing with a room full of priceless handmade glassware. This kid needs to focus on creating his own work and not on screwing around with the work or others.

Every bridge shot was plastered with blinding lens flares like he was a squirrel playing with a shiny bit of tin foil, he tried to pass a rural power station as a starship shipyard and a brewery (!) as a starship interior, and he destroyed a planet that represented one half of the "good guys" (and a huge part of the mythos) that was an inviolable icon of the storyline since the franchise began over 45 years ago.

Keep this whiz kid's hands off of Star Wars. He had no respect for the Star Trek saga and there is no reason to think he won't do the same with Star Wars. Tunnel-visioned geniuses like Abrams should be creating their own original work and not messing with the work of others.

Looks like someone's a little confused here. You talk about Star Wars as if it were your teenage virgin daughter. Star Wars was created by Lucas and it made him more wealthy than almost anybody on this planet. If he wanted to mess it up, which he didn't, it's his to do so, well, it was his anyway.

Star Trek was a lowly 60s TV show someone turned into a successful franchise starting in the 80s. I'm sure Roddenberry never dreamt his creation would feed Hollywood with much needed success despite the fact that his original show was unceremoniously cancelled.

To claim Abrams is unqualified to handle Star Trek is completely false. He gave it new life and potentially another 20 year run. It may not be the same Trek the trekkies wish for but he made it palletable to a new generation much more sophisticated in sci-fi and astrophysics. I'm sure he'll do the same for Star Wars although it remains to be seen how well he can handle the metaphysical stuff by Lucas.

As much as I love the franchise (other writers/developers have done some great things with it!), the only film with any substance so far has been "The Empire Strikes Back." I'd waited for Lucas to bring that magic back thru four more films, but found them all disappointing for story lines. So I'll give Abrams this benefit of doubt: he can't do much worse...can he?

An alternative? Ridley Scott. He'd never touch it, but he is a fellow who is a deep thinker who has the maturity to see the value of the mythos and who would respect the threads that combine to make the complete tapestry. Abrams' is way too shallow and he has no respect for culture. Another suggestion would be Mel Gibson. Braveheart, the Patriot and Apocalypto are brilliant examples of his ability to blend legend, history, struggle, action and humanity. He would have been a way, way better choice.

Ridley Scott is the director I first thought of when I mentioned "boring". Sorry, after Prometheus, I won't be going to see a Ridley Scott flick again. The Empire Strikes Back I agree was the ONLY film in the franchise with any kind of substance. I can easily see Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter 3) doing it. I think he has the chops to make something really special.

JJ's Stark Trek was good, but not great. too slick, way too much reliance on CGI. i hate when there is only actors acting against a green screen.
my bet is he will do a "link" picture. throw an aging Luke or Leia in there, maybe Lando. have them participate in the plot but at the same time, hand the torch to a new, young cast. its been done before, mostly horribly. need i bring up

You think the old Star Wars trilogy was "dark"? I'd say that's a stretch. Not that I have a problem with that, nor is "dark" automatically a good thing (it can be a lazy way to try to make your story seem cool, and often ends up just being nihilistic). But while the original Star Wars arc has suitably dark moments, overall it's a revival of corny Hollywood swashbuckling. Which is why it's great – it's pretty well balanced, but if anything it skews toward the cutesy. Look how it ends...with Ewoks. And the "comic relief" characters in that (the droids) were the first element that Lucas really settled on.

None of which is to excuse Jar Jar Binks 🙂

I won't hold the story problems against Abrams, but the absurd lighting and the constant lens flare were most certainly under his control. The next time you watch Star Trek note how the bridge is lit. There are lights literally everywhere. Anyone who had to work in such an environment would become quickly exhausted from having lights shining in his face every second. There are even rows of spotlights above displays.

And then there's the ever present CG lens flare that distracts in virtually every scene, even when it makes absolutely no sense to have lens flare. It's as it it was put there to be a constant reminder that you aren't part of the scene, but that you're watching a recording of it. I have loved Star Trek since it was aired in the 1960s, but this movie was terrible. We can only hope this nitwit doesn't make the same mistakes in the upcoming Star Wars movie he made in Star Trek. I simply don't trust this man's judgement.

Oh Great. A Star Wars re-boot. Let me guess.

The Sith will go back in time, save the Death Star and blow up all rebel planets. Jabba the Hut will become the leader of the Jedi, Jar Jar Binks will be cloned and populate a planet, Luke will turn gay and marry Chewbacca, Annikan will be sold to an unsavory Madame from the Brothel Planet and become her bodyguard, Yoda will open a coffee shop on the Artisan Planet, and Hans will wind up using the Falcon to deliver milk to colonies on the moons of an obsure planet called Jupiter.

It's not a reboot, it's Episode 7. If they bring back the original cast + a real director who isn't fail like George Lucas then this is probably the best hope for this franchise to survive.

So, by your logic, if it's popular it must be good, huh? The only thing Abrams' success and popularity prove is the extent of the public's bad taste. Sure, he's popular with the video game/MTV generation who don't care one bit about a good story and just want to see him fling a bunch of CGI at the screen. Call me old fashioned, but in my mind a good film is all about the story, the writing, the acting. Abrams' films and TV shows have no emotional resonance. They're cultural junk food.

    Hmmm a recent rumor..

JJ Abrams will use a new character to resurrect the Evil Sith, and their Dark Force in the Universe ...A computer generated Dick Cheney as the Sith Master Lord that trained The Evil Emperor Sith Master Palpatine..The Evil Sith Emperor teacher was not killed....

Palpatine thought he had killed his master, and so he buried him, but he was still alive.. The Evil Sith Master Dick Cheney was just fully paralyzed ...and using his powers of the dark force survived...and healed his own grave..but it took a long time 50 years...and made him completely mad...and Dick Cheney now has many imaginary friends like a big 6 foot rabbit named Harvey...Harvey was Dick Cheney's closed friend for 50 years while he was paralyzed and buried in his own grave.....

Ohh the screen writers are delighted.. then new story line possibilities are endless.....The Evil Sith Master has used his powers of the Dark force to create an invisible 6 foot rabbit that fights like a Jedi and can appear anywhere in the universe and battle the Jedi....Only spraying 100% vegetable oil on this monster, can make the Evil Sith Rabbit visible for 1 hour.....Then that Evil rascally 6 foot rabbit Sith disappears again....

I am get old so maybe I am trying to hang on to a piece of my youth and trust me if you were 17 when the first one came out it left a impact on you. the prequels were great visually but awful script and acting wise. a stain on the star wars name. the idea of seeing the original cast in their classic roles just does not appeal to me and can only tarnish it more.

That one has not done a feat on their own is not a valid condemnation of their dislike for the announcement. It may well be true that they cannot do better AND that this is a bad choice for director. Their ability to do or not do a thing themselves has nothing to do with anything. With Star Trek, as well as many of his TV series, my impression is that he's not the type of director that would put JarJar or Ewoks back into the next movie, which is a big plus. We'll have action, special effects, and hopefully a decent plot even if Disney is putting a rush on it.

  213. Do we need more Star Wars?

Seriously, the story has been told. Enough already.

And I'm a HUGE fan of the first three, I just dont care anymore for anything made beyond them, the prequels were horrendous. The bas_tardization of Star Wars continues... like it has in comics, stup_id video games, Lego's, you name it... all just awful. I cringe everytime I see more junk that expands on SW.

Your not looking at the big picture.

It's NOT about the movie it'self. The story maters very little. It's about the MERCHANDISE!!! The toys and crap that this movie will generate all over the world is mind-boggeling.

Paramount should have handed the franchise over to either Quentin Tarantino or Timur (Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) Bekmambetov. I'm hoping it will just be turned into a musical about all the Star Wars merchandise and how, back in the day, we always knew that Star Wars was better than Star Trek until the next movie came out, and then we knew Star Trek was better. And it could have Leonard Nimoy in there singing "I love Courscant in the Spring Time" with people from Al Capone's gangsters rocking tommy guns and dancing to the Can-Can musicals. But wait, Lens Flare! And then Scott Bakula could leap in and say "Oh boy!" every five seconds as he leaps repeatedly into every single character in the story, just as they kill Kenny, who walks on just in time to see them pin a medal for excellence in science fiction entertainment on Rick Berman's chest (and I mean literally pin it to his chest, not a shirt or jacket or even a pin-striped gray vest that he bought last Thursday at Walmart, with the blood and gore and all that just gushing out on stage.)

It is too late for you, Lucas.

JJ Abrams will show you the true nature of the Force.

    He is your master now.

"To [have Abrams] be a part of the next chapter of the 'Star Wars saga' . . . is an absolute HORROR." This guy is a joke.

Probably picked JJ because he's in tight with Speilberg Disney's first choice. I would think maybe Neill BlomKamp or Guillermo del Toro (pacific rim looks fun). Super 8 was not bad but Signs sucked monkey balls.

But what if Vader sits in a chair singing "I'll take you home again, Kathleen" in an operatic punk-rock voice?

OMG! You're absolutely right, Sean! That 2009 "Star Trek" movie drove me nuts with all of that stupid lens flare Abrams deliberately added! I hope Disney will have none of that nonsense!

Oh I sure hope they are better than the last 3. I really dont think it is possible to do any worse than Lucas did on 1 2 and 3. All Abrams has to do is keep JarJar and Hayden Christensen out of them and we will be fine.

    • Move FORWARD

Darth Vader is dead aka Hayden Christensen and Jar Jar was a throw in that was suppose to be dark sided, but Lucas made him light so the little kids could watch and only 10% of episode one was acutally planned the rest was thrown together. Get over the Jar Jar Binks crap that's the only excuse anyone can come up with for episode one.
