Tina Turner to become a Swiss citizen

After living in Switzerland for nearly two decades, Tina Turner is making preparations to become a Swiss citizen.

The AFP reports that the 73-year-old legend is poised to soon receive Swiss citizenship, and will in turn give back her U.S. citizenship.

As a resident of a town called Kuesnacht in northern Switzerland, Turner has reportedly passed a local civics test as well as an interview. She still awaits approval from the canton of Zurich and federal authorities before she can claim her passport, the AFP says.

"I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here," Turner, who moved there in 1995, has said. "I cannot imagine a better place to live."

Chickens and other egg-laying creatures are widely kept throughout the world, and mass production of chicken eggs is a global industry. In 2009, an estimated 62.1 million metric tons of eggs were produced worldwide from a total laying flock of approximately 6.4 billion hens.;`

The way the U.S. treats black people, I'm surprised more of them don't become Swiss. At least they don't shoot you for walking through "white" neighborhoods in Switzerland.

Funny and absolutely wrong. More blacks are killed by blacks than by any other race. Not just in America but throughout the world. Also more blacks kill whites than the other way around. Go do your homework.

Someone said that Tina moving to Switzerland equals being a traitor. What a stupid comment. Especially in light of the fact that our politicians are continually betraying us with their BS policies that have the country almost going over the proverbially cliff. There is a reason why Intelligent people are retiring overseas and it ain't just because of the weather. Good for Tina. Most of my friends are moving overseas too and for the same reason. We are tired of getting screwed by the government and we are tired of our politicians not doing their job and taking care of the needs of the people. There is no point to living in any country unless it is worth doing. Why would you live in a country when you are ready to retire that makes it a losing proposition. Retirement is supposed to be a pleasant experience not a miserable experience. In terms of what your money can buy for you, you can live very comfortably for a 1/2 of the cost of living in the US. It is bad enough that people have to put up with all kinds of BS from the government under regular conditions before retirement. At the very least one should be comfortable when one reaches retirement age. If one can't do it here, one should find somewhere else to do it. When you arrive at the retirement age your obligations are to yourself. We all know that people are struggling even at that age to make ends meet and the government has not made it a user friendly proposition for most seniors. That is why many are forced to choose between food and prescriptions for their health issues. If we don't want to loose people to go overseas, there is a simple solution in our "Free Market System". You've got to give people a reason to stay. If you can't do that than you can't play the Patriotism Card because you haven't fulfilled your own obligations to your citizens. In other words if you can't put up, then shut up and let the seniors Rest In Peace, where ever they want to, to be comfortable. I'm not going to be miserable in retirement just to appease somebody's sense of what they are partriotic and neither will you. Especially if it costs you double what it would cost to do it somewhere else. Amen!

What equals being a traitor to your country?
      1. Passing The Patriot Act.
      2. Starting unjustified wars and making the American tax payer fund them.
      3. Helping Wall Street destroy our housing market and walk away with a slap on the wrist.
      4. Etc, etc...
If your government betrays you, it's not traitorous to leave them behind.

    • I'm still here....

Good times and bum times, I've seen them all and, my dear,
      I'm still here!
      Gold statue sometimes,
      Sometimes a kick-in-the-rear, but I'm here
Now one day you're hailed for blazing trails
      Next you're nailed for fingernails
Either they cheer or they jeer, but I'm here
I've heard them say song writing, acting, producing,
What makes her think that she can? Or better yet song writing, acting, producing
What does she think, she's a man?
One day a Tony, Tuesday you're top of the Bill
      So I'm here!
Wednesday you're phony, Thursday you're over the hill
      But I'm here!
Now I've kept my clothes and kept me space
I've kept my nose to spite my face
Still once you say you won't
Keep your place loud and clear
Once you announce you're directing all you hear is...
Everybody says don't, everybody says don't
Everybody says don't, it isn't right!
      Don't, it isn't nice!
      Everybody says don't, everybody says...
Don't tell me not to live, just sit and putter,
Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter,
Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade.
Don't tell me not to fly, I've simply got to, If someone takes a spill,
      it's me and not you,
Who told you you're allowed to rain on my parade
I'll march my band out, I'll beat my drum,
And if I'm fanned out, your turn at bat, sir,
At least I didn't fake it, hat, sir,
      I guess I didn't make it
Get ready for me love, 'cause I'm a-comin'
      I simply gotta march, my heart's a-drummin'
Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade,
I'm gonna live and live NOW!
Get what I want, I know how!
One roll for the whole shebang!
One throw that bell will go clang,
Eye on the target and wham,
One shot, one gun shot and bam!
Hey, look at me world, here I am...
I'll march my band out, I'll beat my drum,
And if I'm fanned out, your turn at bat, sir,
At least I didn't fake it, hat, sir,
      I guess I didn't make it
Get ready for me life, 'cause I'm a-comin'
      I simply gotta march, my heart's a-drummin'
Nobody, no, nobody, is gonna rain on my parade!

YOU GO GIRL! I don't blame Tina Turner in the least for giving up her citizenship. I am an American, born and raised all over the USA. I loved what the USA stood for and was the main reason I served in the Marines. Yet servicing in the military really opened my eyes to some of the really crappy things the leadership (or lack thereof) has done to other countries. I plan to give up my citizenship as well when I retire. Not because I don't love my countrty, but because my country doesn't love me or any military service member. US Leadership always talks about supporting our troops, but doing it requires work. And most elected officials Dem, Rep, and Indep. are all alike....say whatever they can to get elected and throw out ethics, morals, etc when it contradicts getting re-elected. And I love the Middle East, lived there for over 7 years. Less than 1% are nut jobs...less than the hard core nut jobs here in the USA.

She has lived there 17 years and her choice may be strictly because she has grown to love Switzerland and feels an allegiance to it – nothing to do with complaints about her original homeland.

You're wrong with that. She had to pass the same citizenship test and the same interview every single person who wants to become swiss citizen has to pass. There is a whole list of immigrants from other countries who passed at the same time. You can look at it here:

The reason why swiss citizenship isn't easy to get is simple: You get the right to vote about more or less every law that gets newly imposed or changed.

I have loved Tina Turner from the first time they came to American Bandstand. I was on the show in the 1962/63 period out of Philly and they had an autograph bar and instead of getting her name on a picture I opt out to talk with her as I did with the five major star's every Saturday we filmed the show. And out of all the entertianers I found her to be so real and warm and really taked to me...not at me....I got to hold her hand...it was great then and the memory will always live with me....Gods speed dear "Lady"

What a beautiful way of putting your experience with Tina. So intelligent and talented she is. She is a child of the world not just one country. Isn't it nice that she went beyond her beginnigs here and grew to maybe find a happier home.Good for her.

Why not? The USA has a regressive system that taxes Americans even when they are taxed in their country of residence...making them pay income tax in both places. I don't know of any other country that does that to its citizens. I'm surprised she's put up with it this long. Tina Turner has lived in Switzerland for many years. Obviously, she's decided to live out her days there. It makes sense to make the move complete by becoming a citizen.

      Hi SheikaKA,
I lived abroad for a while in Switzerland and yes, we paid US taxes. It wasn't double taxation as the Swiss did not tax us. My husband is Swiss by birth and a naturalized, US citizen.

Actually the Swiss taxes are much higher. But they have social benefits including health care that probably outweigh the added tax for an elderly person.

I would too, if I could. She has made a great income all over the world. Highly recognized as a great singer and show person. Should check out her Tina in Rio dvd – tore it up! She's smart -Ike couldn't reach her in Europe was my thought.. Switzerland is a great system and from a small tiny town she probably loves the villages in Switzerland. She has my respect and vote. I wonder if she skii's?

She's lived in Switzerland for 20 years. She likes it. Why not become a citizen? The USA is not the only nice place in the world, ya know. There are lots of great countries. So many people here are brainwashed into believing this is the best. Well, I don't think so. It's getting harder and harder to make a decent living here. The 1 or 2 percent own almost everything and want more. They want us to not have health care or jobs. So what's wrong with moving somewhere else? I would if i could.

She realized just as many dark skin celebrities realized that it's more acceptable to be light skin. Also, she probably had some self-hate issues. Alot of dark skin celebrities are experincing that too. White people would never understand that.

OMG! When I saw this comment I laughed out loud... I'm black, 42 years-old and my coloring from when I was a child to teenage years, twenties and now forties has changed many times over the years. I was pretty fair as a child, then darker as a teen due to outside sports like tennis, and now fairer because tend to stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen. However, living in California I can definitely see a difference in my skin tone in winter and summer months. Tina Turner, living in a climate that rarely gets into 80 degrees fahrenheit and is pretty much cloudy all year, would more than likely have a lighter skin tone than when living in California or Tennessee; especially after almost 20 years. Besides, if you look at her coloring over the years it really isn't that much lighter...

Because, David, we African Americans have been disrespected and vilified for so long that some have chosen
not to idenify as AA. And this is the very short answer.

For the record, Tina is like most black people in America a mix of white and black and sometimes Native American. She is in fact about 30-33% or somewhere around there white with some Native American so her skin color is right on and about the same if you look at old pictures.......she never has been dark skinned. Plus as someone said, the climate is a factor as well; however black people do tan and are lighter in the winter than summer just like everyone else.
