We track Beyonce-gate (so you don't have to)

There's no doubt that Beyonce put on one heck of a show when she performed the National Anthem at Monday's Inauguration of President Obama.

She just didn't put on a live one - as far as we know. As a spokeswoman for the U.S. Marine Band told CNN, Beyonce didn't actually perform the "Star-Spangled Banner" live during the ceremony, but rather lip-synched along with her own voice. (Were these photos on her Tumblr page intended to be a hint?)

However, later in the day, the Marine Corps said in a statement that no one in their organization "is in a position to assess whether [Beyoncé's vocal performance] was live or pre-recorded."

If it was pre-recorded that wouldn't be uncommon, but it would be surprising, considering everything evident in her rendition: the hand motions to match her scaling the notes, the facial expressions conveying effort, and - most damning of all - the removal of her earpiece.

After she finished, those who bore witness were awestruck, hailing her performance as flawless. So how did everyone take it when they learned that the whole thing was pre-recorded? Here's a recap:

12:00 p.m. ET: Right around lunch time the news began to emerge, with the Times of London and New York Post's Page Six reporting that Beyonce pretended to sing during the Inauguration, while Slate tweeted that Bey's "rendition of the 'Star-Spangled Banner' was a beautiful, terrible lie." BuzzFeed was quick to forgive, however, as Star Jones went on the defense:

12:30 p.m. ET: Adding fuel to the fire was TMZ's report that Kelly Clarkson, who performed a sparkling rendition of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee," sang live. CNN's confirmed that both Clarkson and James Taylor, who performed "America the Beautiful," sang live during the inaugural ceremonies. We haven't yet heard back from Beyonce's representation.

1:00 p.m. ET: Within an hour of the news spreading, many were taking Jones' point of view. CNN readers weren't that quick to judge, as the first few comments were along the lines of:

DW: So what? It sounded fantastic.

just sayin: who cares? she was there as eye candy. and it wasn't a paid performance was it? nobody should expect them to be singing for real at these sorts of entertainment events.

Lisa freira: That was actually a good idea. Can you imagine if it somehow got messed up? She'd be living that down for years. Meantime what we got was a beautiful rendition of a song to make us all proud

Although at least one person couldn't resist a joke:

jazziebelle: ...wow, guess she's not all she's cracked up to "Bey" LOL

OK, make that more than a few people:

3:00 p.m. ET: A few hours into Beyonce-gate, there were a few who were seemingly disappointed and/or disbelieving (although we're hoping some of this is sarcasm):

Although several more couldn't find a reason to care.

Three hours in, the question turned into: does it even matter that she lip-synched? Both Spin and Entertainment Weekly have voted "no, it doesn't," especially considering the long history of other artists who've done the same thing. It seems Bravo's Andy Cohen would agree:

Beyonce has never performed live, just like Britney has never performed live neither of them has the voice to do that. Their performances are taped with auto-tune and assistants who can actually sing and then they go and stage for the sole purpose of shaking them T's A's. Beyounce was kicked out of Destiny's Child because she was messing up their songs with her out-of-tune squelch.

Let's get the facts out there (so some folks are not wasting gray cell matter on trivial seconds that will never be recovered): FACT: there WAS a recording of her singing the National Anthem. FACT: she sang OVER the National Anthem towards the end. FACT: the Marine Band ALSO did a little air guitar. LIke a good shampoo: Read and reread -no more than two times. THEN...tell us how YOU are making your place in this world a little BETTER than 30 days ago -maybe by caring LESS about innane and unnecessary.

Beyonce Knowles is the only singer in 200 years in US history to lip sync at a Presidential Inauguration.
She stood in front of the Military, The President, Congress and former Presidents: Tthey stood for the National Anthem & they put their hands over their hearts–and she had a CD player under the stage playing the National Anthem, while she pretended to sing to them.

.....Anyone who says thats "no big deal" should be ashamed of themselves.

There have been many, many high profile singers/musicians that have sung/performed live in conditions (extreme cold, large stadiums) that were not conducive to a live performance. When one is at the top of his or her game like Beyonce or President Obama, haters will find the most mundane issues to criticize. At the end of the day, it was a beautiful rendition to celebrate the President on his second term. No one in attendance paid for a ticket and I sincerely doubt the only reason a person would attend was to hear Beyonce sing that song live...

This is a base rate fallacy since the members of Milli Vanilli lip-synched to another singers voice; not their own. He may have lip-synched in similar conditions to what was described but it does not compare to this situation since he never lip-synched to his own voice... MUAH!

This just shows how little people know about live singing....everyone from Whitney to Amy Winehouse have done it...no big deal! Of course, you have the awful mishaps like Ashlee Simpson on SNL, but then she's no Beyonce.

Besides, the President was the host and he didn't seem to mind. http://www.obamadrama.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/the-great-mime.html

Sad and pathetic! If you agree to do a "live" performance than bloody well do it that way. Don't "phone" it in like she did, it's so disrespectful and phony. Plus, NO doing it "live" in the studio is not "live", as there could be multiple takes, autotune and all other cheating crap "pop" stars do in the studio these days. The music industry is at it's lowest point right now. Agents and managers of these singers are destroying the industry convincing people that it's ok to do it. Next ....

After watching her perform in DREAMGIRLS with the far more talented and vocally gifted Jennifer Hudson, it's no wonder she didn't feel secure enough to perform live in front of the President and, arguably, the largest audience she's ever sang before. Yes, she's beautiful and a good dancer, but is she didn't have that going for her, as well as the army of promoters, song writers, and choreographers, she'd just be known for a fairly decent voice. And that's all. And, I'm not a "hater" (I like her); she just doesn't have that great of a voice. If you think otherwise, you're deluded.

No one said it didnt sound good ol' seaman! My opinion is that whitney houston's was better (i mean if youre going to split hairs here on the best prerecorded renditions). If you want to lip sync like some worn out drag queen in a bar then say so... but she pretended it was live and thar makes her a fraud! What it boils down too is that she is not the gifted singer that you and she think she is. No matter how big of a fan of beyonce you are. You are not her biggest fan, she is! Why are people so upset? Many use recordings when conditions are rough, like dancing hard (Madonna, Spears, etc.) It was COLD in D.C. and the Anthem is hard to sing under perfect conditions. It's rather a relief she didn't sing it live and have the impossible music get her in trouble, instead of going ahead and missing the high/low notes. I just don't get the anger and attacks, and I'm not even a big Beyonce fan.

Just to let you know.... prerecorded songs at live performances serve one purpose and one purpose only, and thats to eliminate the difficult challenge of singing live.. Beyonce was simply afraid of the challenge because of her very weak, and very tiny voice! She knows her voice better than you do and thats why she made the decision she made! And who can blame her considering the decision was made immediately after hearing Kelly Clarkson sing huge notes, a wide range, and a very dramatic performace. End of story!
Only gifted singers with huge voices like Kelly Clarkson can do such things. I know its hard for you being a Beyonce fan, to find out that she is not a gifted singer, and does not have the gift or talent of a professional singer... but thats the facts!

As a classically-trained and professional vocalist, I completely understand the practice of pre-recording. Yo Yo Ma pre-recorded his performance for the last inauguration because of the cold. But Beyonce really didn't have a good excuse. All of the rest of the performances were live – no issues with the cold. Her recording was phenomenal, but so are many recorded performances where they have the benefit of multiple takes, auto-tuners, etc. For an event like the inauguration of the president, you gotta do it live. I lost much respect for her as a performer because of the lengths she went to deceive the audience. I am sure that many further comments will say I'm jealous. I think she has an extraordinary gift and she is gorgeous and can dance to boot. I'm small potatoes and I know and accept that. Just as a performer, I would have more integrity than that.

  67. Not Fooled!

What's funny is that she (Beyonce) tried convincing the the viewers further by yanking out her earpiece, as if the earpiece was somehow constricting her hearing and compromising her performance. I think it is shameful that she went through such subterfuge to sell her deceit! I'm sure the publics knowledge of her faux performance is difficult, and that her PR is in full throttle damage control. Sometimes. Pretty picture, only a pretty picture and nothing more. Clearly if you want a genuine live performance, you go to a Kelly Clarkson concert. If what you want is to see a pretty girl at a magic show then Beyonce would be your better choice.

I hate to criticize Bey but she trying to stay relevant and in the "limelight" she must've forgotten most of her career has always been considered as "copy right infringement", "fake" and "fraud & stealing" so with that being said deep down inside she know she is not that great of a singer to sing such a strong song. Sorry Bey some jobs you have to pass on to others "you just can do everything." I support anybody trying to stay positive but Bey had an excellent career maybe she should stay out the spot light and find other avenues in life, I am sure she will be just fine.

From this day forward, Beyonce is not "The Queen" as she calls herself: Queens don't lip-sync at Inaugurations in front of the President, former Presidents and the Military during one of the most historic moments in America's history-especially when a lesser experienced singer (Kelly Clarkson) sang live in the same conditions and was brilliant.

We officially know who the REAL QUEEN is-Will Aretha Franklin, The Real Queen of Soul, Please Stand Up.

  72. Really!?!?!

As a singer myself I can see the requirements singing live in that venue . Can we say NIGHTMARE!
First, the weather is always a factor too cold and even the best voice can crack.
Second, the venue is not designed for "performance" its open and boxy nothing for the voice to carry on.
For that fact you have no Idea if it was her decsion to have the recording played or not. She still was really singing into the mic to get that type of facial expressions.
There are many factors we do not know so stop judging.

Most performers at live sporting events do not resort to their recorded version of whatever it is they are singing. Back in my younger days I worked at the old Reunion Arena in Dallas before Maverick and some Stars games and I can count on one finger the number of times our talent did not sing live. To me, lip synching to a recorded song is fraud. It also reveals how talented one really is, and in the case of Beyonce, apparently she's not nearly as talented as she had us believing.

My opinion as a musician/vocalist and retired millitary officer:

The military gave 3 statements in 2 days, each with obvious lies (e.g., "we don't know if it was lip synched" when they pushed "play" on THEIR recordings?! ugh.). The military NEVER lies for anyone – only to "cover" their own image. If Beyonce stated a personal reason, they DEFINITELY would have blamed/quoted her.

Watch (listen) to Kelly Clarkson's song. The accompanyment completely neglected her (she worked her rear off trying to keep up with their MESS when they should have followed the vocalist, like any proper musician(s) would). Further, she had to belt the entire song because the band played over her work, drowning out the vocalist. The conductor IGNORED the vocalists and played louder over them. This ruined the entire performance.

Multiple lies and coverups, combined with slaughtering Kelly Clarkson's work, that shows that most likely after hearing that mess Beyonce did the best thing for the audience and gave them a better performance. Any professional musician (like me) would applaud her. If poor Kelly knew about this accompaniment HELL she would have done the same. Sadly, Kelly was first, when Beyonce heard the horrid mess and chose to give the audience better music.

Good for them both. SHAME on the military mess and their (continued) disability to honestly take accountability.

Sounds better than most of the current crop of entertainers(?)..

She (and her hubby) are far too concerned about her image to risk a live performance. Remember: she's doing the Superbowl; bet that's recorded, as well.

It's a terribly difficult song to "knock it out of the park"(as over the years we've heard) and Beyonce hit a huge home run on it. Btw...the earpiece is so she can hear herself, did anyone notice her screwing up after she pulled the earpiece out? (probably because it screwed up).

... on how other celebrities are quick to defend fakery, fraudulence, lies, and overall just suffer fools gladly.

Its as if our standards have dropped, it must be the thug mentality thats slipped into our collective popular culture mindset, or belief system.

What, they faked it? So what! At least it wasn't someone else's voice! ... what is that?

Something very, very wrong with that. Its stupid. Its low IQ, its the 'don't snitch' ghetto mentality, exactly the audience Begone-ce deserves.

If she did lip-synch, it was good strategy. If the National Anthem gets screwed up at the Inauguration, it would be all we would be talking about. It was stirring and beautiful and the reality is she did sing it.

Both the Marine Band and Beyonce were prepared to play the National Anthem, but with limited rehearsal time, if there was a decision made to play one or both as a recording it is understandable. With an artist such as Beyonce we expect individualized phrasing. There is a lot of work needed to get a band to adjust to this. It is a tempest in a teapot to make a big deal of this either way. It was a great performance.

She could clear this all up with a definitive statement as to what she did or didn't do. Instead, all we get is silence!!

That tells me all I need to know.

Funny that the other 2 performers had no trouble performing live.

If she did, in fact, lip synch, at least be adult enough to admit it. She just never thought anyone from the Marine Corps Band would let slip her little secret!

Search "Kate Smith God Bless America" on youtube and you will see Ms. Smith lip-synching the song in various live events.

Most notably, you will see her lip-synching the song on TV with Tennesee Ernie Ford and Bing Crosby.

If it is good enough for Kate Smith with "God Bless America" it is good enough for Beyonce.

    • Wha?

How is that fraudulent singing and faked emotion and vocal delivery POLITICAL?

Doesn't make sense what you typed.

The point, or grip that we have to grip is that she fooled people.

I stood there watching it in front of my computer live and thought, hm, she sucks but did nail a few notes... rather soulless though, not very inspiring... and then, bam, she lip synced it. Oh no wonder it came off pretentious and superficial.

The point or "grip" is that we place these hacks on pedestals and then people like you, who suffer fools gladly, defend fraudulence. Amazing to me.

It says a lot about the character and values of so many, or more specifically, how celebrity obsessed we are that we'll do anything to defend their wrong doings and fakeness.

When the audience is told that a huge star is going to sing live, we want her to sing live. The fact that you're okay with being fooled because of your adoration of her says something about you and it isn't good.

I didn't care for her singing at all. Today's singers have no heart and soul when singing the Nation Anthem. They just go thru the words like nothing was there. Where is Ella or Kate when we need the song to be sung correctly.

She sounded great and looked great, BUT SORRY NOTHING COMPARES TO THE LATE WHITNEY HOUSTON, WHEN SHE SANG LIVE AND FOR REAL!!!! At the Super Bowl, way back when! And she looked like she was really working hard for that PERFECT RENDITION of the anthem. Beyonce looked beautiful, but she didn't break a sweat! Unlike poor Whitney...you knew Whitney was live, no if ands or buts about it... Sorry by once you looked beautiful and sounded great , BUT, IT WASN'T REAL BECAUSE IT WASN'T LIVE.. Point of fact, In 1991, Whitney Houston’s jaw-dropping performance of the National Anthem at that year’s Superbowl – arguably the best performance of the Anthem to date – also turned out to be lip-synched.

I just want to say one thing. Our national anthem is perfect as written. When singing this song please keep in mind it is NOT about YOU! It does not need all those extra notes, added riffs, or all that creative license that is taken with it from anyone & everyone including all those celebrities with such wonderful voices. Show some respect. If you are so vain &/or self-centered, then please opt to sing something else. America the Beautiful – fine. My Country, 'Tis of Thee – go right on. This Land is Your Land – peachy. Those are beautiful & patriotic but they are not sacred. Our National Anthem is. It is about the sacred representation of our country – our flag. That symbol for which so many pledge & sometimes give their lives. So if you can’t sing it beautiful and straight, then lip-synced or not – please don’t. Because Beyonce or not – let me be clear: It is NOT about you. So get over yourself.

I couldn't agree more! I detest when a singer attempts to change this song – especially as this is not just Any song. It is just wrong to get 'creative' when singing our National Anthem. If you can't sing it as written, respectfully decline the invitation and let someone who Can sing it do so.

Firstly, she probably didn't "lip such". She may have sang without microphone amplification. It's actually HARDER to lip synch then it would be to just sing underneath her own voice.

Secondly, there's a bajillion reasons why she might have had to. Have you ever woken up and your voice sounded like crap? Okay, now make that day the day you were supposed to sing in front of the president and the world, live.

    The show must go on.

Or maybe this is an indication that, like so many current 'artists', her talents lie not within, but the tricks, the audio 'smoke and mirrors' of the ultramodern recording studio. Can you say 'autotune', anyone? A true artiste would welcome the challenge of singing this song live, not evade the issue by lip-synching. Clarkson didn't – not that I have any love lost on Clarkson either but – so shouldn't Beyonce be held to the same standard as all those before her who DID truly perform live?

Can you imagine what the fallout would have been if she had made some mistake? That is the reason IMO for lip synching. The fallout of doing the performance badly would be way worse than the discussion taking place over lip synching. Singers don't usually have to sing in those cold temperatures.
