Late night takes on Te'o

As soon as the story of Manti Te'o's girlfriend situation broke, the Internet immediately came up with its own punchlines.

Manti Te'o: A linebacker, a made-up girlfriend and a national hoax

And on Thursday night, it was clear writers at various late night shows were tasked with the same job, as everyone wanted to weigh in on what will stand out as one of the more bizarre stories of 2013 - and the year just started.

On "The Tonight Show," Jay Leno warmed up with a few Lance Armstrong cracks before throwing out some softball jokes on Te'o.

"Have you been following this whole girlfriend scandal ... do you understand this?" he said. "Apparently he had an online girlfriend that didn't really exist. You know where he met her? Fantasy football."

David Letterman kept it short, quipping in his monologue, "Nothing creepy really happens at Notre Dame, and finally, great, something creepy's going on. About the creepiest thing that used to happen at Notre Dame was when Regis would show up at a pep rally." In fact, the only other athlete he could think of "with an imaginary girlfriend is Kris Humphries."

On "Late Night," host Jimmy Fallon claimed to have audio of a conversation between Manti and his fake girlfriend that should've tipped the football player off:

But Jimmy Kimmel had one of the funny sketches, in which he clamied to have footage of the real Lennay Kekua, whom Te'o said he was in a relationship with:

This really was some of the craziest shlt I've ever heard. Hollywood couldnt make this up any better. Not one bit of sense to the whole deal.
