'American Idol' returns: What's the verdict?

Wednesday night marked the return of "American Idol" with brand new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.

We never imagined we could miss Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler so much.

For the first night, we were treated to auditions from New York City, where contestants rolled through offering up what was supposed to be their best for a shot at a golden ticket to Hollywood.

As you can imagine, there was much tension and disappointment. Oh, not so much from the singers, but from some of us viewers regarding Mimi and Minaj.

The pair went back and forth all night, sniping and at one point coming across as "Mean Girls" as they debated about the movie "Mean Girls."

No seriously. That actually happened.

Minaj seemed to want to make an impression right out of the gate as she talked often, loudly, and sometimes over people. When subway singer Frankie Ford stood before the group, Minaj took the opportunity to try and explain what a subway is to the other new judge, Keith Urban.

Urban may be from another country (Australia) and sing country music, but he does know what a subway happens to be.

Some reviewers loved Minaj: The Toronto Star said of her performance, "despite some silliness, such as using a British accent from time to time, Minaj was articulate and very attuned to the contestants." The paper found Carey, on the other hand, to be seemingly "rather full of herself, and also seemed most likely to lapse into Jennifer Lopez-style platitudes as the season wears on."

The Seattle PI thought Urban "couldn't help but be overshadowed in this company as he sits between the bickering ladies," while EW noted that they were "impressed and surprised by how many 'okay' contestants the judges turned down..."

Vulture didn't buy the Carey/Minaj diva-off, writing, "Sure, I can imagine that they wouldn’t get along terribly well, but neither one is a good enough actress to sell any serious beef."

In the back-and-forth with the new judges, we almost forgot about anchor judge Randy Jackson, on top of the reason you are supposed to be tuning in: the contestants.

In addition to Ford, the ones to watch also appear to be Angela Miller, who blew the judges away with her performance. It was made even more remarkable by the fact she suffers hearing loss.

There was also Teena Torres, who as a child sang for Carey, and Christina “Isabelle” (we are unsure as to why her name was listed that way) who lost 50 pounds but gained the judges support. The latter's status as a student from the Berklee School of Music allowed Carey to toss of the zinger, "I went to the school of  f***ing LIFE!"

There was also Gurpreet Singh Sarin, who we want to see more of just because he has the nickname "The Turbanator," thanks to his turbans to match every outfit.

What did you think of the return of "Idol?" Will you be watching?

I will be watching, only to see the contestants, etc., but I was VERY disappointed in all of them but Keith Urban. I'm not even a country fan-he just seems like the only one who is actually there for the sole purpose of judging. I am a huge fan of Mariah's music, but I guess I never realized what an uppity DIVA she is. Nikki Minaj has no business judging ANYONE, and Randy all of a sudden has 'Simon syndrome'! smh...Yeah, i'll be watching, but i'll be throwing up during the commercials.

I TOTALLY agree with you. Nikki Minaj is ALWAYS the first one to talk and she just blurts out what ever is on her mind and usually its noe even worth listening to. I agree with her desperate attempt for attention is so painful. SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY AND SHOULD LEAVE THE SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a disgrace. We used to watch Paula and Simon go at it but at least therre was some love and humor involved. But Nikkii MUST GO. She has taken control of the show after two episodes. Poor Randy, our Lead Judge and the rock that has kept this show alive is sitting therre with nothing to say. Nikki needs to be quiet and professional. Thouseands and thousands of people have been waiting for another exciting and power packed season but instead many are rqady to walk away due to this obnoxious DIVA.. Kick her butt of the show. Look at your ratings. This is a disgrace...

What's the verdict? It's ridiculous – always has been and is even more so now with the inclusion of "singer" Nicki Minaj. It's never been about anything but drama – as the scripted rivalry between Mariah Carey and Minaj shows. It has definitely hit an all-time low, but perhaps this latest will help bring about the show's demise.

I have been an AI fan since the beginning – with some ups and downs – but still a supporter.

I can say after watching the first two episodes that I have no use for Nicki OR Mariah. Nicki is a DIVA in the worst sense and I have absolutely no patience for her at all. She's a bad seed on the AI set. Don't let it grow. Mariah, on the other hand, is not quite as bad, however, she's no J-Lo and after only getting two seasons with her, I'm quite let down by her replacements. Yes – I believe AI thought they needed two people to replace J-lo.

I feel very bad for Keith Urban. From what little screen time he's had (when Nicki's plastic coated features weren't show center) I think he's a good addition to the team. No Steven Tyler for sure, but he brings qualities of his own to the panel.

As for Randy – I'm sorry to say this, but he's the last original link to what could be touted as one of the most influential "reality" shows on TV. He's holding on to a fading start and I fear that this thirteenth season, will prove to be unlucky for him, and the franchise as a whole.

I haven't forgotten that Ryan is still here. Been here from the start, and is presently the only one of the 5 "stars" who has any appeal.

I'm sorry AI (and to AI faithful fans) but I fear this season (from a staffing point of view only) will be its last. It's run its course and The Voice is creeping up fast behind and capturing the interest of the people.

I guess if you put your preconcieved thoughts aside and give the new judges a chance the are actually quite good and entertaining. For a 2-hour talent show, we were lucky to see the, er, talent, for 30 minutes. Producers made several poor choices in scripting this year's show. 18 mil for Carey and 12 mil for Minaj...even the scripted cat fights were boring. Even with the ratings decline, the show will still make money..and that has always been the #1 priority. Except for a mildly successful Phillip Phillips, the winners/talent have been forgettable for several years.

After watching every season since the beginning as an adult viewer – I watched two episodes and won't be turning this on the rest of the season. AI was always a fun part of conversations, shared experiences and singing. I didn't always agree with the judgets. I've never liked the "drama" and snarkiness of making fun of contests in the edited clips during the early weeks. However, this season saw the focus on the judges not the contestants. The focus to "look at me" "hear me" "I'm the important one". I could almost tolerate that to get to hear the later singing. But clinched it for me was the utter lack of humaneness by the judges this year. From facial expressions to words. They seem to be out to humilate the contestants who try out – and yes aren't singers. They come every year. But the laughing – the comments – the facial expression are role models of another sort of bullying and ostracization. Idol no More. Poor production. Have the producers watched what occurred and thought that was entertainment? From my perspective you've lost the 35+ demographic. Yuck.

Now I understand all the stories we heard about her and Mariah not getting along and besides, who the heck is she? I mean, really? I could only take about ten minutes of her before I had to turn the channel. People tune in to see the judges as much as the contestants but I can't see watching a train wreck every week. I agree. Even during auditions – the judges in the Voice are much more humane – a role model of how to give feedback, be honest, and not make a circus of misfortune. AI Producers got it all wrong now – and are making the show all about making fun of people – alllowing dysfunction as enterntainment. I was loyal for 12 years with AI but no more. I have watched the Voice too since the beginning. I will wait for it to start and hope that the producers and new judges in the chairs – keep the quality of the show coming. The Voice is everything that American Idol is not. The Voice's judges are real people and they know their craft. You can tell they get a kick out of working with each other, their teasing is fun rather than mean. These judges choose their contestants sight unseen, just from their voice, and personally mentor and coach their folks. Judging on show night is helpful and usually right on target. They're not afraid to tell the truth, but they are kind as they do so. Carson Daily is a great host, not full of himself So . . .why would one tolerate American Idol another season? I may tune in for the finale episodes and see the circus just to hear amazing voices, but personally I can't wait for the next season of The Voice!

I was just having the “Nicki or Mariah” debate with one of my DISH co-workers. She’s a big Mariah fan, but I’m just going off of which one made me laugh more often last night and that was definitely Nicki. I’m sure it’s going to just get crazier between them as the season goes on. I’m sadly not going to be home to watch American Idol live this season because of my school schedule. I’ve got my DISH Hopper all set up to record it for me though. It’s awesome how every night, the PrimeTime Anytime feature records everything on all four major networks during the primetime hours. after a long hiatus from watching, I thought to myself "why not give it another shot?" Keith Urban is a favourite star, have always enjoyed Ms. Carey and Nicky has shown herself to be fun, quirky and a savvy artist. Sad, but nothing's changed by the cast list. Gimmick, soap opera, inane conversation and worst of all, for the first time, real disrespect of the singers. Ignoring them for irrelevant chatter? oh well, there are other things to watch, or maybe I'll take a walk during so these won't be "Idol" hours. Buh-bye

The show USED to be about the performers. They have some sense that the judges are more interesting or something. You have lost all your true followers by trying to make it the "wives of American Idol" instead of about the singers. I have been loyal "even when I shouldn't have been" since the beginning, but I'm lost now. Someone needs to get back to ACTUALLY molding a star!

always thought the best part of watching AI was the beginning shows to see who would either shine or be the joke with the auditions. However, thanks to Mariah Carey & Nicki Minaj this was completely ruined last night. All you could hear even as contestants were entering the stage was the two judges competing for insults thrown at each other. Sad. All I could think was how fun it was the prior two seasons with Steven Tyler and J-Lo, and how they let the CONTESTANTS take the stage and shine and not themselves. How selfish and rude of Mariah and Nicki. Also, a pet peeve of mine: if you're going to post, please check for correct spellings!

What was that sound? Oh, it was this year's mega-dud American Idol crash landing. I used to love this show, but could only take about 45 minutes of it last night. Mariah added little, Nicki talked over everyone and tried to run the show, Keith looks like he didn't know what hit him, and poor Randy looked like he was a figure from a wax museum with nothing new to say after all these years. What a major YAWN! I won't be spending my time on this disaster.

Lets send back Keith Urban to Australia, were he belongs.
Mariah Carey : go back home and take care of your kids and young husband( he is bored at home)
Nicki: she is from the Caribbean, lets buy a one way ticket for her to leave us alone. We do not need any more ugly people here.
Randy Jackson: He has been getting pay for so long for doing nothing, he is useless to the show. Fire him.
Ryan Secreast: Him and the Kardashian family can go one way ticket to the middle east and stay there for good.
American Idol is finish, every year is getting worse. This years they went too low, the show sucks.

I so agree with you. The show has really gone down hill. Even the contestents or auditions they received are not quality performances. Those with the true talent who are serious about winning a contract are trying out for the Voice or So You Think You Can Sing, and the X Factor shows. Their judges truly care and are taking their mentoring and contracts seriously. No diva's on the shows. The shows are about the contestants and their lives which is why Americans like myself tune in every week. We buy into the performers and support a fan base for them from week to week. Buy in from the viewers is what sells airtime advertising space (commercials) and keeps the ratings up which is a win financially for the network. In the case of AI this season will be the last. I will no longer be watching and I am a mature woman with teenage and college kids who are in agreement. They stopped watching AI and are now fans of The Voice. I have to agree with them.

In the old days AI was really about Simon Cowell insulting the contestants, but there was some real talent to watch. When Simon left and Randy effectively became Lead jJudge, the show shifted much more to be about the contestants, and made for a better show. However it never got around the problem of the voter demographic (young teen girls) and cute triumphed over talented. (Philips was OK, but IMO deserved to be 5th or 6th.)

If the show shifts back to being about the judges rather than the contestants, it's simply not worth watching.

I am very disappointed in the show. The new idol judges just don't mesh. The balance is off here between the judges which makes it painful to continue to watch. The producers of the show have to gain more control over the judges and direct them or shall I say tame them until their contracts are up or the producers can buy out their contracts and replace them before they loose viewers interest all together. Remember their are other music shows for us to watch the Voice has done well and its judges are terrific. They listen and support one another and are actually nice to the performers or offer constructive criticism which is what the IDOL show originally set out to do. In order to produce a final product an IDOL winner this year under these judges well the two latest judges they will need to be disciplined and put in their place. They are full of themselves and are not helping the ratings but destroying the ratings. I have decided to not tune in next week. I will be watching X Factor and The Voice. Go back to the basics get new judges and make the show once again what it started out to be and than I will start watching it again!

I have never cared for American Idol that much. But they lost total credibility with me when they put Minaj on as a judge. To me it was a move to save a sinking show by pandering to the 13 to 25 demographic. Now that's fine if that's what they want to do, but Minaj does not have the time in to be judging anybody. I can't take her seriously. Her career has just started. I don't know a lot about Urban, but Mariah Carey has been up, down, in, out, and through show business for the better part of twenty years. She KNOWS what time it is. I'm not her biggest fan, but I would respect her opinion because of her longevity, success, and experience. Minaj can't say that and only time will tell if she ever can. She may just be a very bright flash in the pan. She does not have the experience to judge anybody in my opinion. Plus she comes off as rude. Being blunt and honest is a must when judging talent, but rude is not.

First thing is first. I think it is BS that they keep trying to say these auditions are in NYC when half of the crowd shots were at the Prudential Center in NEWARK NEW JERSEY! And did I hear Seacrest correctly? Did he LIE and say they were at the Javits Center in NYC when they were in reality at the Prudential Center in NEW JERSEY? Then all of the judges shots were from Columbus Circle, which is actually in NYC. Clearly they need to stop the BS about how they do these auditions. Obviously contestants are pre-screened no matter what city they are in, and then the select best and worst are taken to a different location where the judges are. Cut the cr@p Idol, and stop lying about your locale's.

As for the "fued" it didn't seem as bad as they have been trying to hype it up to be. I don't like Mariah or Nikki since Mariah is a self-absorbed/indulgent narcissist and Nikki...well, who is Nikki Minaj?? I was fully prepared to despise both Nikki and Mariah but I actually found myself tolerating Nikki and at some moments almost liking her. She seemed to actually care (somewhat) about the contestants and was understanding, actually asking about their lives. I know it is for the show but she was asking at least. Mariah was too busy flipping her hair and acting like she was some anointed queen. Mariah seemed totally uninterested in the contestants, how they performed, or that they were even there. I don't think she actually even looked at most of them. She is way too out of touch with real people and reality that she brings NOTHING to the judges table. Move on Mariah and get back on Jenny Craig.

  113. Sanity Test

Companies have to abide by regulation, so this can help those people running those companies run a self-diagnostic to see if they need or want to heal.

Can you all please help me find any errors in this sanity test? Also, practice creating them to increase health to the USA.

Sanity Test: A sanity test is a question about objective consensual reality or the verifiable scientific, mathematical truth of reality for an individual person. It is not a game or contest which requires another person. It favors nobody and does not pick sides with people, groups, parties, or ideals. It is an individual test without other people and without bell curves.

Read the facts and answer the question

    1) A violator of law causes damages (losses)
    2) A victim forgives violator without repayment of damages (losses)
    3) A judge interprets crime as not having damaged society and not causing punitive damages.

If the victim forgives damages, the judge is wrong. There is a loss to society.

You, likely, felt an emotional pressure or force in your mind when you read "If the victim forgives damages, the judge is wrong"

    Why is the judge wrong?

I wasflipping channels and stopped with I saw Randy on IDOL, after I heard Minaj's cutting remarks towards Mariah, I turned channel. I'm not an IDOL fan, haven't been one for years. I think it's sad that African-American women so-called celebrities, music stars, reality show personalities have been hoodwinked into thinking this is the only way they get their fair share of attention. We are soooo much more than the stereotypes that have been portrayed on TV. Perhaps that's why this angry or sassy black woman stereotype continues. I started teaching myself the craft of screenwriting because I was so tired of seeing this same stereotype in films and TV. Imagine my surprise when I, a 20+ year veteran law enforcement officer, with a masters degree, and a few winning scripts under my belt as a screenwriter, had a H-Wood produder ask me (at a pitch festival), if I had any of those urban scripts. I was appalled that without even considering my writer's bio, he automatically assumed that I would write from that genre. I asked others white writers (who also pitched to this particular industry red) if they had the same similar experience. They said "no." This is just one reason why I stopped attending flying out to H'wood to attend pitch meetings. That kind of behavior is offensive to those who truly have a desire to improve storytelling from a totally different view point. But then, I had to remind myself for some of these unlearned professionals, this is the only tiype of image they care to promote. Sad, but it's guys like hime that will keep the stereotypes going. Open your eyes dinosaurs, the world has changed.

I've watched IDOL every year since Season 2. I've been OK with the changes of judges up until this year. I am very disappointed in the low quality of people we have in our two lady judges. They are absolute divas, the kind I can see bullying their classmates in jr. high or trying to out class one another while thinking they are above anyone else around them. I could not believe they started going British accent last night. Are they intentionally trying to alienate their viewers? Trying to push us away? Who do they think they're impressing?

So the worst of it.... All this stuff is pre-recorded so I don't see any change of judges or behavior anytime soon, unless they do some MAJOR editing and have enough material with decent behavior to pull from.

Personally, I like IDOL and would like to see it carry on, but not like this. ugh!

Some contestants get so much more air time covering their sad story line bringing a camera crew to the home, following them around etc when others get none. The show has ALWAYS been a joke. It's just typical Americans and their sensationalism. Anybody who is talented enough and worth the fame can find it without having to go on that show. We don't need American Idol to "force" what they think is talent down our throats - all for ratings and publicity. What is so entertaining about watching random people sing someone elses songs anyways? A real artist will make it without the show. If you want to watch people sing/perform – good and bad, get off the couch, and go support your local artists. I like Mariah AND Nicki, but I can only hope that the drama is too much and the show eventually gets cancelled. What garbage.

Mariah has an amazing voice and I enjoy her music. Nicki is completely different though, she raps primarily. If you don't like rap, obviously you'll never like her or understand her talent. I find her incredibly entertaining AND immensely talented as well. Look at it this way.. which one actually writes their material? It isn't Mariah. I don't understand why you would compare the two anyways... two different generations, two different styles of music. You can't exactly bash someone who is self-made either without looking ignorant.

Why on earth do these singing shows use "singers" as judges? Get serious........ What can they offer potential singers in terms of relevant feedback? I'm sorry – but these singer judges are just too full of themselves and too narcissistic to be beneficial to anyone. Divas? Right on. AI has totally come off the track with Minaj – she's over the top silly, and attention getter. So long AI – don't think you're going to last. • American Idol SUCKS.. Nicki has to go , she is the worse judge.

One older woman (Mariah) and one kind of young woman (Nicki) fighting for attention, that's pathetic and low. Mariah should go back home and take care of her kids and her TOY BOY husband. Sugar mamma, Mariah got to go. Nicki never shuts off, her big mouth is always saying some stupid things. This show has gone down bad.

Actually, ratings were done significantly from last year's first episode. Even at that, American Idol has more viewers than The Voice and X Factor but I wonder if that will continue throughout the season with the constant bickering between Minaj and Carey.

What a waste of time. agree 1000%. If the network continues with "Nikki" and herself centered self, her rediculous interaction with contestants and other judges, there will be no audiance left. After all of these years watching, I have no problem turning this year off and from what I have read on other sites neither do most viewers who have posted. Fox TV looks like you have a flop on your hands if you don't get the flop mop off the judges panel.

From watching the promos I was all prepared to hate Nikki. After watching all 2 hrs.I was actually surprised how much I like her. Ya, she's weird and goofy but I thought she showed a lot of empathy for the contestants and truly wished the best for all of them. Was also surprised at Mariah, not sure what her deal is. Didn't seem like she wanted to be there, maybe she'll get more comfortable over time. Maybe I'm naive but I thought the whole Mariah/Nikki deal was mostly Mariah's fault. Thought Keith was good, down to earth and sensible. Randy's cool.
Thought the whole 2hrs was slow and too many distractions, lets see the contestants. Not sure that the whole performers as judges thing makes sense. Sure they may have talent but are they any good as seeing up and coming new talent? Als, how does having 4 judges work? What if their is a tie? I'm all for bringing back Simon, ya he was irritating but he knew talent and spoke his mind.

She dresses like a clown (no offense to the clowns), has fake boobs, fake, ugly wigs and fake and ugly face (wait, she was born with her ugly face), her music sucks. Regarding Mariah, her musical career was over, so she so desperate needed some TV air time to bring her career alive. American Idol is getting worse every year. By the way, next year please, fire Randy Jackson, he is a free loader, and he is just useless and talentless. American Idol is done, finish, boring.

I think Nicki would probably be good if Mariah wasn't there and they didn't feel the need to outdo each other. Nicki can still remember what it's like to be struggling to find a career in the music business. Mariah just seems to think she's above everyone else. Absolutely boring. Wasted twenty minutes of intro only to be let down by nonsense bickering among the two "lady" judges. Simon Cowell would have been offended by such behavior between the two. This may be the end for American Idol.
