'ParaNorman,' 'Cloud Atlas' among GLAAD Media Award nods

Just because it's entertaining doesn't mean it can't also set an example.

That's the position the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation takes with its nominees for the 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards, which recognizes "outstanding images of the LGBT community."

Among the contenders in the outstanding film - wide release category are "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Your Sister's Sister," "Cloud Atlas," "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and the Oscar-nominated "ParaNorman," which is the first PG animated film to receive a GLAAD Media Award nomination.

On the music side, industry darling Frank Ocean was nominated for the outstanding music artist award with "Channel Orange." He'll compete against Adam Lambert's "Trespassing," the Scissor Sisters' "Magic Hour," Rufus Wainwright's "Out of the Game" and Gossip's "A Joyful Noise."

In the TV categories, "Glee," "Go On," "Happy Endings," "Modern Family" and "The New Normal" are nominated for outstanding comedy, while  "Smash," "Degrassi," "The L.A. Complex," "Grey's Anatomy" and "True Blood" are up for the outstanding drama title.

GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement that 2013's group of nominees "enlighten and entertain, but also reflect a new American landscape where a growing majority accept and value their LGBT family, colleagues and friends. Now more than ever, viewers not only accept gay and transgender characters and plot lines, they expect them — just as they both accept and expect LGBT people to be a valuable part of their everyday lives."

You can check out a full list of nominees at GLAAD.org. The GLAAD Media Awards will be held first in New York on March 16, followed by a ceremony in Los Angeles on April 20 and another in San Francisco on May 11.

Come on, even as a gay man I just can't watch "The New Normal". Talk about cheesy, over-dramatized stereotypical characters. I tried to get on board but after two episodes it was boring and predictable.

Agreed. My hubby and I couldn't make it through 5 minutes. Trash that represents all of our worst stereotypes.

I loved Paranorman, and Laika studios as a whole ( go, Coraline! ), but I think it is silly that "Norman" is nominated only because of the (spoiler alert) 2 line joke involving the jock guys boyfriend. Or maybe that's the point? Oh well, great movie
