'A Christmas Story,' 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' join National Film RegistryJust in time for the seasonal TV marathons, the Library of Congress' National Film Registry has recognized "A Christmas Story" as a cultural touchstone. The 1983 holiday classic is one of the 25 films that will be added to the National Film Registry, selected because they exemplify "important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking."
Other beloved Hollywood productions, like 1961's "Breakfast at Tiffany's," 1971's "Dirty Harry," 1992's "A League of Their Own" and 1999's "The Matrix" also made the list. "Established by Congress in 1989, the National Film Registry spotlights the importance of preserving America’s unparalleled film heritage," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said. "These films are not selected as the ‘best’ American films of all time, but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture. They reflect who we are as a people and as a nation." To be included, a film must be at least 10 years old as well as "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant," according to a statement. Before narrowing it down to 25 titles, the Librarian reviews hundreds of movies that have been nominated by the public, and also consults with film curators and members of the National Film Preservation Board. If you want to weigh in on movies to be included next year, you can nominate a selection at the Film Preservation Board's website. An annual event, this year's list of movies were released between 1897 and 1999, and vary from documentaries to indies to more risk-taking projects:

Breakfast foods vary widely from place to place, but often include a carbohydrate such as grains or cereals, fruit and/or vegetables, a protein food such as eggs, meat or fish, and a beverage such as tea, coffee or fruit juice. Coffee, tea, juice, breakfast cereals, pancakes, sausages, bacon, sweet breads, fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, mushrooms, baked beans, muffins, crumpets and toast with butter or margarine and/or jam or marmalade are common examples of breakfast foods, though a large range of preparations and ingredients are associated with breakfast globally.*

I love films where characters deal with the challenges in life with more dignity and courage such as Invincible. In this movie, Vince Papale overcame all obstacles for playing for NFL’s Philadelphia.
why are you crying..you knew...if you want to be columbo you cannot cry...lolololol
where the heck is debby does dallas on that list?
Great choices with A Christmas Story and They Call It Pro Football. The Matrix I could have done without. Great effects, sure, but not what I would call significant. 3:10 To Yuma is such a great movie, I was surprised it wasn't already in the Registry.
The effects are probably why it made the list, they were very revolutionary for their time and that' what the Registry looks for
Isn't there supposed to be a Christmas Story 2 coming out? Supposedly, it's about the kid grown up or something. I thought that's what I heard/read.
There are actually two sequels, 1994's "My Summer Story", also called "It Runs In The Family" & "A Christmas Story 2", a straight to DVD release this year.
i hate a christmas story i cant believe ther show it over and over on some channel or others makes want to kill myself . i hate annoy movie ever
I enjoy reading your prose. Very well written. Now come closer so I can poop on your head.
Maybe you could... you know... change the channel or get your pimpled hiney off the couch and go do something worthwhile...
How could Breakfast at Tiffany's be on this list? Bruce Lee and his wife walked out of the theater when they saw Mickey Rooney's racist portrayal of Holly Golightly's landlord. His whole "me so solly" buck toothed fool was offensive to me and I'm not Asian.
How could this racist trash be considered a film classic?
you are and ass. look at the other films at that time. there were lots of non politically correct potraile of races in those films. that was just what happen.
Me Chinese, me play joke, me put peepee in your coke.
I'm a chineeser and it bothered me too. Not the Chineese guy but that Holly was married to Jed Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies. Craziest thing ever. At first i thought I was drunk. She was married to Uncle Jed then ran off to New York and then he comes to get her and haul her back home to the sticks. A really odd movie.
Everybody wang chung tonight.
Take a pill and chill out Dee! It's a movie from the early 60's. Do you object to the stereotype blacks in "Gone with the Wind"?
Chinky, chinky, Chinaman, sitting on a fence. Trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cents. Go watch Birth of a Nation and you'll feel better.
I'm fairly certain "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1914) will have more racist overtones than "Breakfast at Tiffany’s".
SO glad to see A Christmas Story on this list. It has been an absolute family favorite since it first came out and my sister and I have made sure to pass it down to the young ones. We watch this every year (usually Christmas morning after all the presents have been unwrapped) although, no one has been forced to look like a pink nightmare...yet! 🙂
