'Gossip Girl' series finale: Mystery blogger revealed

[Editor's Note: This post contains spoilers for the series finale of "Gossip Girl."]

After six seasons, "Gossip Girl" finally got down to the business of revealing the (real) identity of the titular anonymous blogger on Monday's series finale.

But if you watched the pilot of "Gossip Girl" closely back in 2007, or saw who showed up first to meet Serena in the second season finale, then you might've already guessed who it was.

The series has been building toward this moment since its inception but the "big reveal" didn't quite feel as satisfying as it should have. That could be because we thought we learned the identity of "GG" last season, when Georgina Sparks temporarily played the role.

Or it could've been because, as the series has progressed, the anonymous blogger airing the dirty laundry of the Upper East Side's wealthiest residents became more and more of a plot device than an actual character. She was always there, meddling and unearthing secrets, but knowing who she was took a backseat to the drama she caused. But I'll get back to that ...

The series finale was all about the relationships: Chuck and Blair, after all of their breakups and makeups, finally got married. It may have been prompted by the death of Chuck's dad Bart, but we'll take it. Blair's Elie Saab gown was perfection, as was Lily's reaction to planning Bart's funeral: "Well, the good news is we can do the same thing we did the last time Bart died."

(That deserved a "line of the night" award, as did William van der Woodsen telling Ivy to go away: "You're a Lifetime movie called 'Nobody Gives a Damn: The Ivy Dickens Story.'")

Serena and Dan's bond has gone through just as many trials as Chuck and Blair's, but of course in the end they found a way to patch things up ... even after Dan admitted that he'd been behind Gossip Girl all along by outing himself in Nate's Spectator. Yes, that's right - Dan made up the name of Lonely Boy for himself, thinking that if he wasn't born into the world of the upper crust, maybe he could write his way in. And at least, this way, he was certainly being talked about.

It was apparent as we went through a montage of familiar faces reacting to the news that he was an unexpected pick (cue nearly everyone: "I thought it was Dorota!"). Jessica Szohr's Vanessa Abrams couldn't believe it, and neither could con artist Juliet (played by Katie Cassidy). Dorota needed a drink: "A vodka on the rocks. Big glass, not too many rocks. Three olives."

Serena had thought it might've been Eric for a while, while Chuck always knew it had to be one of them. Georgina, meanwhile, was put out that no one was acknowledging her run as Gossip Girl: "I hacked it and stole it from him, that makes it me way more awesome."

When you think of all the crazy that Dan has dished out via his anonymous persona, the fact that Blair and Rufus were the only ones expressing any sort of anger was questionable. But they couldn't end the series without revealing "Gossip Girl's" identity, and it would've been pointless to waste the final episode on hurt feelings or Dan trying to make further amends.

Instead, we had a flashback to "GG's" glory days - a.k.a., around the season one era - that revealed the first time Dan met Serena. We then ended with a flash forward to Dan and Serena's wedding. By that point, Chuck and Blair were the parents of a dapper little boy named Henry, and Lily arrived with her former husband, "Daddy Doctor" van der Woodsen. Rufus was there too - with Lisa Loeb! - and Georgina looked awfully cozy with Jack Bass, thereby winning the award of the pairing we'd most want to see in a spinoff.

Nate darted in running late after fielding questions from the press about his potential run for mayor, and even Eric and Jenny were spotted, proving that they're still alive.

While that scene was sweet, we'd be remiss not to mention Kristen Bell's cameo. As the voice of Gossip Girl, Bell's been heard but not seen and on Monday she got her due - along with fellow CW actress Rachel Bilson, a.k.a. Summer Roberts from "Gossip Girl" creator Josh Schwartz's West coast teen drama "The O.C." The two did a mock script reading, as written by Dan, and Bell was her familiar snarky self.

So was it the series end you'd hoped for? Were you surprised to find out that Dan's been Gossip Girl all along?

And are you going to watch "The Carrie Diaries" in January, thanks to The CW's incessant promotion last night?

OK, so there were enough hints in the final season to conclude that Dan was Gossip Girl, so this wasn't a huge surprise. So no, I didn't really tune in for the suspense, but more just because of how much time i've invested in the show over the years, and I had to watch the end. The series highlights montage was nice,

Oh and since this series has always had really strong music, I thought it was fitting that they had two great standout uses of music in this episode...first, I loved the hilarious 1960's Batman-esque campy music that played during Bart's death scene. I literally couldn't stop laughing at it. Then, I also thought it was great that they had a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's classic "Bonnie & Clyde" sung in English by Great Northern. I've always loved that song and it's many various covers, but this is the first English one I've heard and I love it.

Well I wasn't able to enjoy the finale because I had no audio. Was it supposed to be like that? So confused.....it didn't kick in until 10mins before it ended. I thought the writers were trying to be creative =) I will miss the fashion. I was hoping Serena & Nate would end up together. Oh well.....

I had the same problem too, no word from the CW as to why, or an apology for that matter. Great way to reward us for six years of viewership

I think revealing GG's name ruined the show. I would have loved to watch old episodes, but now it seems boring, knowing who GG was all those years.
I have to say, the idea with Rachel and Kristen was smart. It explains GG's voice, but everything seemed to perfect, too thought through...

But now you can go back and watch all the old episodes trying to catch if what Gossip Girl says is something Dan should know.

Alex Bento as Henry Bass was perfection!! He looks exactly what I would imagine Chuck and Blairs first born to look like! He stole the show!! I would LOVE a Chuck/Henry spinoff!!
