'Buckwild' producer: Show isn't like a train wreck

MTV's new reality series might not be as "Buckwild" as its title would suggest.

The executive producer for the program, which chronicles the reality TV-worthy antics of nine young adults living in Sissonville, West Virginia, told Entertainment Weekly that "Buckwild" is "quite the opposite of everything else on TV."

The EP, John Stevens, points to the fact that these kids aren't as attached to technology and social media as others in their age group, and that their idea of fun involves time spent hanging in the woods and riding ATVs.

"[I]t's not like looking at a train wreck. ... There is a certain coolness to it," Stevens said. "It’s different than a lot of the stuff that has been produced. I think it’s going to get people talking and it might change people’s perspectives. These kids are totally wild and carefree. It will be very refreshing to the MTV audience.”

The concept hasn't been so refreshing for West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who called "Buckwild" a "travesty" in a letter to MTV and asked the network to cancel the show ahead of its January 3 premiere.

On the "Today" show Monday, Manchin reiterated his stance that "it's just not who we are. It's not how we were raised, and to portray this as the norm is wrong ... the viewers must understand that this is not reality, that this is not real West Virginia."

CNN has yet to receive comment from MTV on Manchin's call for cancellation. The network has ordered 10 episodes of "Buckwild," which will air in the same Thursday night timeslot that once hosted "Jersey Shore."

I totally agree with the Senator from West Virginia.. I absolutely think society is going downhill in the respect that they have to resort to "trash" just for ratings and to make money as unfortunately so many people will watch the show and endorse it.. What kind of an example for future generations are we setting? I really don't see too many idols that they can look up to these days, whether it be athletes, policitians, etc. It is getting worse and worse and they are pushing the envelope with every reality program, excuse me NOT reality and I do not see in the future it getting any better. How sad!!!!

Agreed it's not the best situation, but unless ur from this state, you wouldn't know how it is "economy wise". It's a lot more "sad" than any TV show out there! Put it this way....WV needs a boost....PERIOD! And if you believe this stuff is REAL and doing what they're doing is the best thing, then apparently school is the place you should be. It seems every time someone wants to bring in business (casinos, racetracks, amusement parks, etc.), WV says hell no. Take what you can since the govt is screwing the coal miners! I thunk they need to take down the sign at the border of WV...."OPEN FOR BUSINESS". Open, my a$$! Of course people like Munchin and Rock-e-fellar doesnt care....they're rich as hell! It's no wonder more and more young people leave this state day after day.....

I grew up as a teenager in WV. Yes, we got into things. We had parties in fields, we hunted and we rode ATVs. We also had a lot of fun doing it. This is actually a pretty fair representation of not what only WV kids get into, but what 'country' kids as a whole get into. If Senator Manchin is so upset over how his state acts, maybe he should consider representing another more classy state. It would be the same argument if it were a show about a bunch of elderly super religious folk, which there are plenty of too in WV by the way. Someone somewhere would be offended that they would show WV people as clinging to their Bibles like a bunch of uneducated hicks. It's as simple as this, if you don't want to watch something, change the channel. No one is holding a gun to your head making you watch.

The problem is that plenty of people "choose" to watch Jew-produced anti-white agitprop, since there's so much of it.

As for anti-nonwhite agitprop, well, that's offensive and demeaning, so there isn't any.

Just like Teen Mom..a way to get ratings through the uneducated. This gives those involved a way to make a few bucks all the while making those that are not familiar with the actual living environment and culture think this is actually a way of life in WVA.WHAT A JOKE. All this does is boost ratings for a TV network while making the youth of today dumber. This is no way a help to anyone in anyway. It should be called GARBAGE AT ITS BEST. I wonder what these kids parents are thinking about this; I hope not happy..but ya never know do ya. MTV is not what it once was.

I am educated and I am from the country. While i never participated in stupid stunts or field parties,atv/dirt bike riding, swimming in creeks, or jumping off bridges, they did happen all around me while I was growing up (I am now 32). I find it fun to watch this because it shows a different part of America that isn't a bunch of rich people living in the city. At least these young adults either have jobs or are going to college. They are not spending time playing video games but are outside enjoying nature.

Mancin's giving this show a lot of free publicity. I had no plans to watch until I'd heard about the show as the result of all the controversy.

But seeing the photo of the cast makes me wonder what Mancin's problem is. These kids aren't West Virginia stereotypes at all. They seem to have all their teeth, and there's diversity in the cast. I don't see any banjos, no KKK propaganda, and no coal. Seems to me like ALL of the negative stereotypes of West Virginia are missing from this show.

With all due respect to the hard working people of West Virginia, Mancin DOES know the state's got a pretty bad reputation already, right? This show may help ramp up tourism to the state, and may give us all a positive insight into the lives of youth living in rural America.

It really shows in just how uneducated people really are, the ones talk so much crap about WV and call everyone hillbillies, definitely shows just the intellect of people from all of these other states. I guess if we want to start pointing out the bad, maybe each should start with their own state, probably your family members should be at the top of the list! I think the show is nothing more than ignorance, and I am from Sissonville, grew up there, have lots of family and friends that live there, however to let your children be made out as being a bunch of trash is beyond me!
SO YES, E.P Sato…. They have teeth, and what the heck is wrong with banjo’s, and coal. It would really be nice to see your picture and what you “really” look like. Unfortunately, these kids have no idea how their "boring" lives will be forever ruined by the exploitation of an MTV "reality" series. In just about everyone's teen years there were some pretty wild antics but it was not perpetual and probably not as constantly booze-driven as MTV makes sure these kids' antics are/will be. West Virginia is a state of such beauty and is so misunderstood as far as its citizens and this isn't going to help anything. Team Manchin.

Being a resident of West Virginia, I must say that I am supportive of both sides on this "issue". Defending MTV's case, there is a slight sigh of relief from their preordained niche of rich, city dwellers who have nothing else to do with their time but to go shopping with Daddy's plastic and bar-hopping at night, only to wake up in the morning to repeat the process. On the other hand, to defend my fellow West Virginians: West Virginia has been beaten, broken and scarred from previous "renditions" of what Hollywood and others believe we must be like. It's a shame we are so easily judged as a whole based on a few movies. Now, I am not saying West Virginia is the perfect state nor am I saying West Virginia is better than any other state, but keep in mind we all have bad apples. Just because the apples are bad, doesn't mean the tree is bad. West Virginia is looked at as a bad tree. In my honest opinion, I dont think this series is gonna make our forest look any better.

West Virginia is a beautiful state with very intelligent people throughout the state. I agree that this show is just going to make our forest look worse. MTV is exploiting the fact that these families need money due to the economic trouble that has affected the entire nation. The lure of money is a very powerful motivator to do crazy things. I was born and raised in the glorious state and hate when people see things like this and are ignorant enough to believe this is the way everyone is.
