Grammy snubs: Bieber gets the cold shoulder

The Recording Academy showed appreciation for a variety of young artists this year, but they didn't extend any of that love toward Justin Bieber.

The 18-year-old pop star didn't snag a Grammy nod Wednesday for his album "Believe," or any of its singles. Instead, the six artists at the top of the nominees pile include Frank Ocean, Mumford & Sons, Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), Jay-Z, Kanye West and Fun., who earned six nods each.

If you're Justin Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, you look at that and think the Recording Academy "blew it."

After congratulating Bieber's fellow Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen, who picked up two nominations for "Call Me Maybe," Braun didn't try to tone down his opinion of the nominations on Twitter.

"This time there wont be any wise words, no excuses, I just plain DISAGREE. The kid deserved it. Grammy board u blew it on this one," he posted. "The hardest thing to do is transition, keep the train moving. the kid delivered. Huge [successful] album, sold out tour, and won people over ... this time he deserved to be recognized and I don't really have any kind nice positive things to say about a decision I don't agree with."

But Biebs was far from the only name we're accustomed to seeing climb the Hot 100 that was missing from the nominees list. One Direction came up empty-handed, as did Nicki Minaj and Usher. Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee," the type of duets album that's normally considered catnip for the Grammys, was also ignored. Looking at the selection of nominees overall, Billboard noticed that the 55th round of nominations was like "phase two of the youth movement at the Grammys," with the Recording Academy acknowledging fresh acts rather than legends.

But "if there's chaos to the proceedings this year," suggests the Los Angeles Times, "it's largely a reflection of a mainstream music culture ... that's 'more of a moving target.'" For example, the Times says, consider that "artists ranging from Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, Justin Bieber, Pink, and Mumford & Sons to Nicki Minaj, Miranda Lambert, Usher and the Zac Brown Band held the top spot on the album chart" during the eligibility period.

Slate makes a similar observation, pointing to the number of artists who received multiple nominations versus one artist emerging as a victor of recognition.

"While this shows just how vast the pool of worthy albums has become - in spite of the music industry’s commercial struggles," Slate posits, "the triumph of the new traditional vanguard is visible there, too."

What do you think? What were the big snubs and surprises for you, and do you agree that this year's slate of nominees is a sign that the there's a new raft of young artists poised for prominence in the industry?

Justin Bieber is talented. That is the reason why he sells. I think that after this he will continue doing what he does best and that is selling. Anyone who hates him, does it not beacause they are jealous, but beacause they could never reach his level of greatness at thier point in time when they were 18. Justin Bieber can and always will be the best and if you dont like him dont comment, listen to his MUSIC, or do anything that involves him. If you are that guy who's girlfriend, wife, or children listen to him more than they listen to you, then its YOUR fault not Justin Bieber's.

The little fairy doesn't write his own songs, has zero talent, can't sing any better than 99% of the American Idol auditions and will be gone in a year's time. He's just a passing fad. His target audience are 11 year-old girls who think he's 'cute' but have no idea what real music is supposed to sound like.

The Grammys got it right this time. That little punk doesn't deserve to be in the same building as a Grammy award.

People who deserve Grammys have talent – of which Beiber doesn't. Of course, neither does Carly Rae – so they got that one wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong, because honestly I don't know the answer. But aren't Grammys for people with actual talent? Or does it go by record/tour sales now? If so, talent in the music industry left a long time ago.

The Beaver sounds the same because he is a product of digital synthesis, When you don't really have the gift of song, you have to fake it by over dubbing with electronically created sound. That's why most of his music makes it sound like a trio is singing. Not much difference between what he is doing and what Milli Vanilli did. Awards are meant to recognize the talents of a performer, not the electronics.

maybe he didn't get chosen because he made an idiot of himself dressing like a farmer at the awards ceremony held in Canada. Maybe the grammy felt he may come dressed as a black man or something just as inappropriate. I actually agree with the poster who say popularity does not equal an award. His music is fluff and he will be doing a lounge act in 15 yars.

Well said. While I agree the Grammy's have become nothing more than a popularity contest, it appears to me they got this right. Justin Beiber is a 'product' that has been concocted to appeal to teenage girls. I don't really see that much talent and i don't think of him as an 'artist', by any stretch of the imagination....Kind of like Brittany Spears. When they have to use 'auto-tune' to sound half way decent, that's not a good sign.

Justin Beiber should feel fortunate that he did not go home with a Grammy. The Grammys are nothing more than a mechanism to help ancient singers whom nobody listens to anymore feel relevant and a mechanism to recognize fleeting singers who will never be heard from again. Let's remember that it was the Grammy voters who handed the Grammy for heavy metal to Jethro Tull. Brilliant! Maybe one of these days Kenny G will be recognized for his heavy metal play!

The Grammys are supposed to be about what the Academy thinks are the best albums, songs and artists of the year. What the general public thinks is irrelevant. I am so tired of the Bieber fans screaming he was robbed. Does anybody TRULY think any of his "work" was among the five or six best albums or songs of 2012? REALLY? I'm guessing few, if any, who really do are over 12. This is the first year in a very long time that I'm generally pleased with the nominees. No Bieber or Minaj is a great thing, IMHO.

What everyone needs to know also is that the majority group that purchases CD's, concert tickets and watches TV are teenage girls with percentage being over 60%, so naturally individuals like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift are going to sell alot of CD's and concnert tickets, it expected, but are they really as good as say Mumford and Sons, Fun or even Beyonce? No they are not, typical bubble gum music wrote to lure and catch the teenage girls so they purchase these items to increase sales. Sales do not mean talent, just age of fans. Read the statisitcs.

Let me tell you... I bought his album to see what the fuss was about. There were very catchy songs and decent sounds to his album, but by NO MEANS does he deserve the Grammy for it. The board at the Grammys did the right thing this year... for once. In the past they've been known to give a lot of no-talent artists credit when they didn't deserve it. This year, for the most part, they did a good job filtering out the bubble pop and getting to the artists that deserve to win.

I can't take away the good vibes I got from his recent album, and I am not jealous of the money he's making (by the way, that's a horrible argument to make that just because someone makes more money than you they're more successful) but I am making an honest assessment that he doesn't deserve a Grammy. Don't lie to yourself; you've been a Belieber since the beginning and want to make it seem like you don't care for him.

I'm not sure what this has to do with Grammy nominations. Album sales, tours, money in the bank? What does this have to do with awards? None of that means Bieber produced an album worthy of an award or even a nomination for an award. Objectively, his album was generic pop treacle, nothing noteworthy. Maybe this is a sign that the Grammy voters are starting to take their job more seriously and not simply hand out noms to the artists with the highest album sales or most tabloid stories or Teen Beat covers.

I totally agree. The Grammys have finally gone back to what they should be standing for. Not to knock on Bieber, but he really hasn't shown us why he deserves to win the award. Billboard Top 40? Yes. Grammy Award? No.

The fact that he has made more money than many in a lifetime is not a recognition of talent but of luck in his case. he has clicked with an age group that will buy anything that he publishes, they do it on popularity and they have not conception of talent.
I have no idea, because he is very young whether he will have staying power, we will have to wait to see that.

When the Beaver can write his own songs, or sing anything that appeals to anyone over the age of 13, let me know. Snubbed? The kid's a little girl idol, not a talented musician. Just wait until his voice finally changes. His days are numbered until he joins the teen-star has-been gang, along with Bobby Sherman, Leif Garrett, and all the other losers whose fame evaporated as they became adults. I just hope the kid doesn't turn to drugs to deal with the depression, like so many before him. Maybe the Bay City Rollers could use a new singer. Beiber should invest in a kilt, just in case.

Every one of the artists that was nominated works just as hard as he does. The amount of effort put forth should have nothing to do with getting a nomination. And "just like everyone else" means that he shouldn't get a nomination, since the vast majority of artists who put out good albums get no recognition beyond their sales. So, let him be happy with his millions as evidence of his success and relevance, rather than relying on the votes of few individuals that don't reflect the real marketplace for music.

Whether he worked hard on his music or not is irrelevant. If it's not exceptional music (which it most certainly is not), it "deserves" exactly nothing. Do you have any idea how many bands and artists there are in this country who are on the road touring constantly, playing brilliant music and doing so because they love music and will never be heard by the average listener because they weren't picked by corporate suits to be the Next Big Thing and packaged like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese into some cuddly teen pinup cherub? When you talk about "deserve," these people "deserve" to be heard yet you think JB "deserves" a Grammy nod simply because he exists?

I'm a 41 year old male and some of my favorite bands are Metallica, In Flames, Iron Maiden just to name a few. I don't like to listen to pop music but both my daughters and my wife do so I'm exposed to it on a daily basis. My favorite bands don't win Grammys so I never watch the show and I give little importance to how thye are voted and who they are honnoring. As far as pop music goes, I think Believe is as good an album as you can expect from a young artist like Justin Bieber. Yes I did use the term artist for him because he does have talent. He's coming to his own now and he may make it yet. He has been exposed to music from a very young age and can play just about any musical instrument there is. Some peoplke hate horroe movies but can't deny their existance and realize that there is a market for it. It's the same for pop music. As much as I hate manufaactured music and the way some young singers are manipulated and marketed without any real talent is apaling but I don't think this applies to Justin Bieber. Pop music will never go away but I would hope they reward talent and artists over sales and political messages.

Very nice comment. You make a very valid point. I don't like this kids so called music, however he does have talent. He just isn't surrounded by individuals that can take his talent and really make it shine. He should drop that goof of a manager, break away from the "wanna be black" image that they promote him on and really just let him play! I believe that if he was just to play from his true image and talent, he would really shine as an artist! I speak as a musician that writes and plays from the heart. I don't think about trying to fit an image. I'm not famous, my music is not worldwide, but when I play, I feel on top of the world. If I could say one thing to Justin, it would be to forget the money, image and hype, just close your eyes and play.

First off, Kanye West isn't a Gangster rapper and if you took the time to browse through some rap music and not base your opinions solely on a handful of songs that are made only for the Charts, you'll find some incredibly talented poets and lyricists. And at least they put effort into writing lyrics in the first place whereas Bieber probably hasn't written a lyric himself in years.

That means that his fellow peers in the industry dont think that he is worthy of a Grammy. I personally am happy that he was not nominated. What happened to real music and real artists and musicians? Everything out today is nothing but overmarketed bulls*** monkey music. Its about time that the Grammys recognize artists (not entertainers) who have real talent. Maybe Justin and his manager should stop whining like a bunch of b***** and start making music that Grammys will take notice of.

The music industry as it exists today is a joke. Talent is not a requirement-computers will handle that. The main requirement today is how you look. Can you picture Barbara Streisand, Johnny Cash, Bette Middler, or Mick Jagger making it in today's music industry, in spite of their tremendous talent. Americans are way too shallow in so many ways.

I think there are some talented people out there but I think there are many more glitz stars. What they lack in talent and they do lack talent, is covered up with glitz and hype. Bieber looks perfect. He has perfect hair, perfect clothes, the perfect girl friend. He just can't carry a tune in a bucket. But more impotantly than that he's empty, plastic, and predictable. His music has no true depth. There's nothing coming from his gut. He's not an artist. He's a manmade star. It is like the difference between a diamond and cubic zirconium.

The Grammies got it right. What part of "no talent" do you not understand when you talk about Bieber? He looks like a girl, sings like a girl and is not an artist. He is a pre teen bubble gum phenom for sure, but not an artist. An artist is someone who has earned his/her stripes, worked for years in their craft and deserves honors. The latest pool of "artists" are just PR created faces who are caught up in the hype that they are somehow now artists because they sell milliions are CD's. Bieber may now realize that he who sells the most is not the one who wins.

His voice cracked in every other line, he was off pitch, and couldn't keep it together. But, because there are people that think he is "gorgeous", they will always love him. So think before you type. Or just agree with intelligent people and agree that there are plenty of better bands- no- genres than what is popular today. (The Killers, Nirvana, U2, Queen, Zeppelin... all better than current music. And no one ever disagreed with that.)

Alain, the only reason any man would dare sing one of his songs is because he is a male artist singing about girls. That is not even considering the quality of his music. I am a man and I like music - a range of genres. Out of curiosity, I have listened to most of the songs on his album, and they are mediocre pop songs. I wouldn't mind listening to him, but he is just not that good. He is almost nineteen years old and his songs are still associated with high-school-like material. His fan base is a bunch of teeny boppers. The only "grown-up" audience he has - or ever will have - are the girls within close range of his age. He will eventually not be able to captivate a younger audience. The only audience he will ever have is the fan base within close range of his age; and they will be the only ones who stick with him as they age. He is popular now because the estragon runs wild in these young ladies. He is a good-looking guy with a better-looking girlfriend. When push comes to shove, it's about the music being good. Just because you're popular doesn't mean you're guaranteed the nod. Nothing but arrogance showing in this kid's confidence. He needed a wake-up call. The Grammy's gave it to him.

To WTH....I am guessing you are somewhere between the age of 14 and 24; and I am 90% confident about that. If the case be that you are in the highlighted age group, then you are very clearly showing your bias. There are tens of millions of Americans, alone, who can play a guitar or a piano or even drums. There are still even millions who can play at least two of those three instruments; and there are still even hundreds of thousands of Americans who can play all three. Then there is the singing. I would argue more than 50% of however number of Americans can play all three can sing, also; and 75% of those who can sing can write their own music. I would argue further that the most accomplished writers are those who can invoke figurative language and emotional appeal within their music. The problem with teeny-bop singers like Justin Bieber is that his material is not cooked talent; it is raw talent. The difference is that cooked talent are those in the field who can produce music with symbolism here and metaphors there, as well as hyperbole, oxymoron,...Cooked talent are those who can bring in the figurative language and use it brilliantly. Very few young artists are considered cooked talent, and, as a guy knowledgeable about the art of writing, Justin Bieber is not cooked talent. Justin Bieber is raw talent; that is, he is underdeveloped talent. I wouldn't always call raw a good thing, because it can make you sick...He needs to be put back on the grill for a few years. Take a break and go to college or something. Get a useful education. Otherwise, his music will only be made off of the demands of his personal experiences. He will eventually become tasteless. Or, as if the Grammy snub is anything to consider...He already has.

When Biebs lost "best new artist" a few years ago, to Esperanza Spaulding (a seriously major talent), his little girlie fans started posting death threats and screwing with her wiki page. That tells you all you need to know about the kind of fans Biebs has.

Sit back and watch as his little fan girls go nuts again this year.

    Pathetic, just pathetic.

Excluding him shows that, truly, for once, they got it right!

Current pop talent is nothing but Auto-tune. Grammys should be re-named the Auto-tune Awards. I recognize Auto-tune is what sells today...just another example of how Americans focus only on the superficial.

Bieber was snubbed for a reason and the biggest reason is that he lacks the talent. He is not that great of a singer and it kills me to see how much music has really changed over the past 13 years. When people like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and etc set a standard and we left with people like Bieber, Nikki, Keisha and a laundry list of none talent singers.

Yes, we are left with the young artists that did not drug their way into a early grave. He's popular, he sells, lots of young people enjoy his music/style. Get over it. Other than an on/off girl friend problem, I've not heard anything truly bad about this young man except for some car problems with photographers. Maybe all he needs to do is outlive the current folks you all see to think are so wonderful.

It's a joke that anyone would think he's worthy of any sort of musical award–even the Grammy Awards. It's a bit funny he or anyone else that's over 12 would think he's deserving of any musical awards. There should be one televised award show that encompasses all forms of entertainment, but it should be about the marketing. They do an amazing job to make non-artistic, talentless troglodytes appeal to the masses with cookie-cutter pop music. So much so normal people don't know Beach House, but Bieber is a household name even if hardly anyone can name any of his songs.

While he may be "manufactured", the kid has incredible talent (IE recent Acoustic performances at AMA's/ Victorias secret shows). He fits a mold that has been placed in front of him by his leadership team and does exactly what he is expected of. To say he has no talent is to look one dimensionally at the entire music industry. Not the kids fault, he just knows what he needs to do to get paid and has his niche.I'll assume he is in a place that the majority of us would envy to be.

What snub?! You should be required to have talent and a little respect to win ANY award. Because of all the AMA's that went to proved Dick Clark was indeed dead. This twerp doesnt even have the decency to dress appropriately to meet another lawmaker from another country. At least turn the da*n hat around Sparky! Alice Cooper in his heyday would have removed his makeup to meet a president, prime minister, or a royal figure.
This babe in the woods may be a big fish on a playground, but he cant play at being a little boy much longer. And the 'hood routine on a baby face white boy is WAY to contrived and embarrassing. Too bad, the kid can sing.

You know how much production is put into making his voice the way it is on his CD's? Trust me, it's not the way he actually sings. Haven't you seen his concerts where he lip syncs through virtually the whole concert? Biebs is about commercialization at its worst and just shows to find good music, you should listen to indie and not what's popular on the radio.

'consider that "artists ranging from Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, Justin Bieber, Pink, and Mumford & Sons to Nicki Minaj, Miranda Lambert, Usher and the Zac Brown Band held the top spot on the album chart" during the eligibility period.'

These are not artists, they are manufacturers. They design products, they don't make art. In fact, considering how much work the producer does, these "artists" aren't even manufacturing a product, they are assisting.

"Best new assistant product designer of the year goes to . . . "
