Carrie Underwood to star in NBC's 'The Sound of Music'Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens and Carrie Underwood as Maria? On Friday, NBC announced its plans to air a live broadcast of “The Sound of Music,” starring Underwood as Maria, based on the original musical. The three-hour telecast is expected to air sometime during the 2013 holiday season. “Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp,” NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a press release. “She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.” Grammy Award-winning Underwood follows in the footsteps of actress Julie Andrews, who played the role of Maria in the iconic 1965 film. “To have a star like Carrie Underwood perform Maria in ‘The Sound of Music’ - and in such a very special and unique production - is exciting beyond words,” Rodgers & Hammerstein President Ted Chapin said in a press release. Whether you think Underwood is a good fit for the role or not, the former American Idol winner already proved she can belt out “The Sound of Music” during Movies Rock, which took place at Los Angeles' Kodak Theater in December 2007. |

i agree we need more young women to follow carrie in terms of being successful and being a lady at the same time..

i love when men are faithful...it makes me so happy
wait until you meet your photo. ewwwwwww
Why does EVERYTHING need to be recreated? Are we really running of creativity?!
The hillbillies are alive with the sound of Moosic.
Carrie is a 5 Time Grammy winner and an exceptionally gifted Live Vocalist. She can do this with an acting coach, etc- and she has a year to prepare.
carrie underwood is very talented nd beautiful . i love her voice and performance in sound of music
Unfortunately she is too much nasal in her voice and accent in first few bars she is perfect country but does this poorly
and does not have the right depth and volume to do this like JUlie nailed it.
From time to time we see this in the entertainment world. A particularly beloved role is being recast for a remake, and the new actor/actress is facing the monumental task of filling some rather large shoes. Poor Carrie Underwood. Julie Andrews go round' of Maria Von Trapp will be impossible to for Carrie to live up to, no matter how the music or plot is tweaked. I fear this will be a huge mistake for her personally, and professionally.
I have been a Carrie Underwood supporter. I enjoy her music and I was glad she won AI the year she did as she was the best singer at that time. Although, Mrs. Underwood is a TERRIBLE Actress. Her Christmas special fell completely flat and her role in the Soul Surfer was one of the worst acting I have seen. She is too bothered by her hair, make-up and portraying a stiff above the masses celebrity. I am quite disappointed in her transformation, honestly. I didn't think based on who she was in the beginning of her career, that she would turn into a narcissistic shallow person. I am not trying to be disrespectful although it is she who is portraying this image every time she is in the public eye. I will not be watching the remake of "Sound of Music". Unless she does a complete 180, gets acting lessons, starts to be more relatable and less shallow....then the movie will be a bust!
Just watched Sound of Music. Carrie is everything you said. She is an AWFUL actress. Stiff motionless face....
She will do very well in this role and she has the personality for this part. I totally agree.
is out having fun. baawaaahhhaaaaa....who cares.
i'm hanging out tonight we'll discuss this topic at the bar...
Hmmmm. I like Carrie's music and her country way is perfect for her but I think adding those little country twangs and nuances to this perfectly crafted musical is going to ruin it for me.
Carrie is a good singer but playing Maria; she'll have to do a 180.
Ok, yes, she's pretty and she can sing but you don't give a role like this, who has to fill the very accomplished shoes of Julie Andrews...who hasn't proven she can act. Maybe she will do fine, but I don't see why this classic film had to be remade by anyone.
For some reason some of my words disappeared in my previous post that caused it to make NO sense whatsoever. What I meant to say was "Ok, yes, she's pretty and she can sing but you don't give a role like this to someone who hasn't proven that they can act when they have to fill the very accomplished shoes of Julie Andrews". Who knows maybe she will do fine but I don't see why this classic film had to be remade by anyone. To me Julie Andrews will always bee the ONLY Maria.
I think if you compare their careers up to this point of Underwood's life there is a certain parity. Andrews was 30 for Sound of Music, Underwood is 29. Screen and TV roles at least on IMDB (sorry for quick research lol) are 6 -3 in Andrews favor as of 1965. I'm not sure I agree with the casting either but I don't think you can rule her out based on Andrew's resume of accomplishments up to and including "The Sound of Music".
carrie underwood is very talented nd beautiful . i love her voice and performance in sound of music
I am actually excited to see if Carrie can develop the voice needed to really pull of the Sound of Music. Clearly she is not there now, but she has a natural ability to sing and if schooled over the next year, it could really be spectacular. Good luck Carrie and you vocal coaches!
I like Carrie, but she needs to stick with her genre. Why do we need to remake a perfect movie? It's like trying to repaint Mona Lisa or make a new statue of David. They've been done, they are perfect and we love them. And we can enjoy them over and over. Now can we please move on to something original?
Cripes...enough makeup on that face? Looks like a wax exhibit. Hard to believe theres a girl under all that.
I agree, curious to see what she will look like as a novice nun, no make up and hair put p in a habit....mmmmmm
she's flawless
carrie underwood is a talented and pretty young lady. i like her voice and performance in sound of music.
what does your hair look like?
She looks like she's a mannequin in that picture. Incredibly plastic and fake looking.
nonononononononono. she is talented but doesn't even come close to julie andrews. as a sound of music fan, i feel insulted.
I do not view her as iconic...what is being said is that she is a decent example to women of today.
most young women stink today....so we need more of Underwood. Julie Andrews is the queen and very
few meet her beauty and grace as a lady. i'm talking young women in 2013. Most of them are deadbeats
and dirty looking.
Underwood is FAR from "iconic", and the enitre premise is just an insult to Julie Andrews...
As a woman carrie underwood is a talent that we do not see that often. she is smart, beautiful and not stupid.
She knows exactly what's going on. She will do very well in this role and she has the personality
for this part. i agree we need more young women to follow carrie in terms of being successful and being a lady
at the same time...you do not have to be trash to arrive at the top in this business. women need work more
on their self pride and watch this young woman go for it. carrie underwood in the above picture is a pro and
most of all she is a TRUE WINNER. This is what we call WINNING.
GG
carrie underwood has self esteem and is a woman men also look up to.....they find her beautiful, talented and lovely.
good for the guys!!!!!
is not a lemon that's for sure. i love her voice although julie andrews songs were always a very very high range...she needs training, she's beautiful for this role, but i'm sure as a singer she is aware she needs a coach. Julie Andrews had a unique soprano voice. its going to be interesting how this goes for carrie.
and the blue is to let him know its her.
that's why women head in other places for female worship.
If you want to bash someone then look in the mirror. What has race got to do with talent. Carrie was a talent that was undiscovered. She made it beacause she is talented and gifted.
carrie underwood has self esteem and is a woman men also look up to.....they find her beautiful, talented and lovely.
good for the guys!!!!!
I'd marry that woman no questions asked.
Carrie is a woman we look up too and have respect for this is dorder city
you've never seen her have you–need i say more
thats for sure....
100 buckeroos she's screw up like usual...
Appropriate to bring up Lindsey Lohan. Carrie Underwood doesn't come close to matching Julie Andrews. This broadcast should help take the heat off Lindsey for her horrible portrayal of Liz Taylor.
thank you.
i like white...it reminds me summer and death.
FACT: GET SOME ONE TO SING THIS SONG WITH FEELING....WHEN JULIE ANDREWS SINGS YOU FEEL AND SEE THE
BEAUTY...YOU FEEL HER SOUL...SHE HAPPY .....CARRIE IS JUST SINGING A SONG....NOTHING ELSE....NO
SOUL OR FEELING....
THIS SONG HAS TO BE SONG WITH A PERSONS SOUL....IN ORDER TO DELIVER ....THE GREATEST IMPACT..
THIS IS NOT JUST A SONG YOU SING....AND I THINK SHE JUST DID NOT DELIVER IT WITH FEELING...
what type of music do you sing Orlando
Hi: I used to sing in the bass section of a Philharmonic Chorus. I'm 67 yrs old. I love music and I can appreciate Underwood's talents in her line of work. But I believe for what I heard in the promotion video, her voice it is no suitable for the role. I'll give you an example of what I'm talking about. Early in the 90s, Diana Ross, who's talents can not be denied, sang at The Vienna New Year Christmas Concert. Flanking her where Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, two world wide known tenors. Ms Ross presentation was one of the sorriest I have ever heard. Why? Because she was matched with the wrong performers and music. I hope that the same will not happen to Ms Underwood.
Phrasing, breathing and voice are not good enough for The Sound of Music. Falsetto for a high is not what the score demands.
what type of music to you sing orlando?
Phrasing, breathing and voice are not good enough for The Sound of Music. Falseto for high notes not convincing.
great.

Ugh. Sickeningly sweet insipid movie that didn't need a remake. And it would be soooo much better with Lindsay Lohan instead. Or Nikki Minaj.
No one ever lost a dime underestimating the taste of the American public. H L Mencken.
thanks
Blasphemy! von crap family singers! nothing is sacred anymore!
professional and she is what men should be looking at not this garage that women provide then these poor men wind up not respecting and resenting them
not carrie underwood(picture above) i hope your marriage lasts forever. you guys have the tools to keep this marriage going.
i hope our young women of today look at this woman and realize she is a role model...her husband adores her and they are completely loyal to each other–i love that so much and i love you carrie underwoodl
carrie underwood (pic above) are the prime example of a couple ...he is completely devoted to her and why because she provides the love and support he needs as a man and he provides the love and support she needs.
you cannot have a relationship based on keep her mouth shut so she won't explode..it will never work and evetuallly divorce will happen. carrie is another wife on my list that is the best...
remember don't hang around trash...you'll never get anywhere, you want to be with people who have a goal, who have personalities and to want to move forward.
get away from these slobby women...they provide nothing but troube. they are of no use to me and should be of no use to women trying to get ahead.....good work carrie
control...
your a waste
is not garbage

They should have chosen Christina Aguelara for this part. It is her favorite movie after all.

We miss you Carol. Hope you are up in Heaven with Harvey Cornan and and Tim Conway having a big ol time.
We miss you and we love you. Hopefully we'll get to see you again one day.
dumb movie don't you think?
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
NBC is obviously on crack
i can stiil do remakes all the time and run almost 2 miles....haven't done that in years....didn't think i could still do it.
its different over and over and over again....
There is No Other Sound of Music, Any decision to remake is a Bad Decision, Completely Tragic & Bad.
Regardless of the Star Picks, It's just Wrong, the Sound Of Music should NEVER be a remake (yuck).
Give me a complete psychological file on anyone who seen the movie the sound of music more than 4 times
hello?
This is absolute blasphemy! Could NBC have made a more poor choice? No offense to Ms. Underwood but the part of Maria is not for a midrange vocalist... I will boycott this production! Let's get Sandi Patty to star in a new Broadway version...
It's gotta be Fantasia. It's time for an African American Sound of Music.
Hoping Your News Is Good News–I'm NY4Carrie–GoodNight.
Sandi Patti is in her 50s!!! She has the voice, but is waaayyyyy too old for this role. Carrie Underwood will be great as Maria Von Trapp.
i watch it every easter with my family.
she's the bomb
TThere appears to be no limit to the depths entertainment pimps will descend.
When NBC actually delivers on this threat (yes, "threat"), they well defecate on the beauty and the sacred image of "The Sound of Music." They will frolic in the slime with those who "create" the toxic broadcasts that have contaminated TV for years.
How disgusting to defile such a beautiful story and production as has been "The Sound of Music" for decades.
Carrie Underwood, a product of trash TV, as Maria? Heaven help us all.

in my car later today.
has baggage from here to the other end of the moon. yes it is possible....lol
her lies go from here to the other side of the world....lol
certain sections have to be a couple of octave's up for her range...her music instructor can help her with that and
she will have another mega hit.
young women should look up to–she arrived at the top of her game without having to be a bum to do it.
both need to complete peace mission.
What is wrong with most of you. You sound like pigs. If you don't agree with Carrie being cast in the part just say so and keep your filthy comments to yourself.
agree. So much hate and the poor girl hasn't even been given a chance to show what she has got. The video above clearly shows that she can pull off the singing. She needs an acting coach of course, and a dance coach to teach her the Austrian folk dances, etc- but she can pull off the singing.
When I first glanced at the headline I thought it said "Kristen Chenoweth" - that would make a lot of sense ... but Carrie Underwood?? Are you kidding?? Worst. Idea. Ever. I'd rather gouge my eyes out ... Rodgers and Hammerstein are rolling over in their graves about now ... What's next? Tim McGraw as Tevye?
Dit Julie Andrews die . She was and iconic woman.
my family member is better at this because she has vocal background but i will agree her voice is not strong enough for this music.
A remake is supposed to better than the original, otherwise, what's the use? This will be a wasted effort. Carrie doesn't have the vocal range or power of lungs required by this score, as proved by the video on this page. . . . And for the Christmas following this, are they going to make the a move about Mother Teresa starring Dolly Parton?
I think Carrie will do very well as Maria. But I would like to know who will play Mr. Von Trapp??
Snoop dog is rumored to have secured the role of Capitan von Trapp.
Too much twang and pop styling.
is a professional and i agree we need to see more women like this...we have to much trash out there that these
men deal with....these men deserve better women and carrie is one of them.
of singers or the entertainment industry...stfu
This is just wrong. Are the people in showbiz not tired of remaking classics? Leave it alone. If you want to do remakes do the ones that bombed at the box office such as "gigli" or "glitter" come to mind but leave the classics untouched, may as well repaint an old da vinci painting or rewrite a shakespeare classic.
Lame argument!
This isn't a remake, it's a televised version of the Broadway play! Chill out people
First, this is a play, not a remake of the movie. Second, Julie Andrews did not perform live, but was in a pre recorded movie. Third, this generation has no clue about the TSOM. Fourth, Carrie has always excelled at anything she has tried in her career. I don't think this will be any less amazing. Give the girl a break and critique her once the show is over.
Nicely said!
Exactly!!!!! Thank you.
Anne- well said. The comments are just unreal and uncalled for. Some of you haters should really take a deep breath, get a grip, and come down off the ledge.
Carrie is a 5 Time Grammy winner and an exceptionally gifted Live Vocalist. She can do this with an acting coach, etc- and she has a year to prepare. It is not like they cast Tonedeaf Taylor swift. Now THAT would be a travesty.
she has an amazing voice she sings with passion and is a lady....she will be with us for a long time.
she is a woman that we should look up to in terms of goals.
Underwood is a pretty girl and she can sing. But Julie Andrews had...magic. She just emanated kindness and purity and gentleness and goodness and this amazing combination of naivete and mischief and motherly instinct. Does Underwood possess all that? Let's not be silly.
You don't know her so please stop with the absolutions!
tavis smiley is helping with all the nikki comments... thanks for be alert
That's as bad as using Lindsey Lohan for the Dick and Liz movie. Carrie is a pretty young lady and she is talented, but she can't hold a candle to Julie Andrews. Whoever is casting for these movies is wrong.
Julie Andrews is almost 80 years old. I am guessing she isn't available for the part.
I totally agree. There is only one Julie Andrews and she was perfect for the role. Why do we need a mke over??
Carrie is a pretty lady with a very nice, country voice. But I won't watch her perform Sound of Music. I saw the movie as a child in 1965 and thereafter since. Julie Andrews' beautiful voice will always be in my mind and heart and I don't care how well someone's voice is – they will never sing it as well as Julie sung it all those years ago. Kind of like Judy Garland and Over The Rainbow. So many people have recorded that song. There are jazz versions, pop versions, r&b versions – but imo, no one will ever replace Garland's version – no one.
