Steven Tyler to Nicki Minaj: Sorry Nicki, but I'm not a racistWith her Mariah Carey spat put aside, Nicki Minaj has stepped into the ring with a different singer once attached to the "American Idol" behemoth: Steven Tyler. The Aerosmith frontman felt Minaj's wrath on Monday after he critiqued her judging style. Tyler told MTV that there wasn't enough "camaraderie" among the new judges, and that the "Starships" rapper would've sent Bob Dylan to a cornfield if he auditioned.
When she heard about it, Minaj fired at Tyler on Twitter: "Steven Tyler said I would have sent Bob Dylan to a cornfield??? Steven, you haven't seen me judge one single solitary contestant yet! I understand you really wanted to keep your job but take that up with the producers. I haven't done anything to you. That's a racist comment." The rapper questioned why Tyler would think she wouldn't enjoy a Dylan audition, tweeting, "why? black? rapper? what? go f*** yourself and worry about yourself babe." But Tyler told Canadian entertainment show eTalk that Minaj has him pegged all wrong. "I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki," Tyler said. "But I am the farthest from a racist. I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist. I don't know where she got that out of me saying I'm not sure how she would've judged Bob Dylan. I was just saying that if Bob Dylan came on the show, he would've been thrown off. Maybe I spoke out of turn, but a racist I'm not, Nicki."

Steven Tyler was merely referencing the FAMOUS twilight zone episode where the little kid wishes away anything he doesnt like into the cornfield (including other peoples music-the album the guy got as a gift) This was not a racist comment. This is the problem it's the YOUNGER generation like to run their mouths before they know what they are talking about and never consider or research anthing that happened before them (unless they are going to steal it and copy it and make it their "own") Nicki assumed that because he was referencing a white guy the comment must be racist. She is an idiot. All he was saying is she would know talent if a legend was standing in front of her because she doesn't recognize anything outside what SHE likes and and is familiar with. The very reason she MISSED the cornfield remark.

I almost want to blame it on the cultural differences between whites and blacks when people make these intentional ambiguous comments, like one side could not possible have a racist undertone and then there is a misunderstanding. Then I realize that these very intelligent men and women know actually what they are saying. I believe that was the point Jon. Steve is suggesting that if one of the 'gods' was in front of her, she wouldn't have a clue. Perhaps she was offended by the 'cornfield' remark as racist... But 20,000 Nebraska corn farmers would not see it that way.
Think of it this way: he didn't suggest a watermelon field, huh? I think Steven just enjoyed the connotations of Nicki in a cornfield.
I wish Nicki would have some respect for the artists/judges that came before her. Especially Mariah and Steven who's made music not just for a few years, for DECADES. Sit down somewhere on your fake a** and count your blessings that you have American Idol as a job. Be humble....because you really shouldn't be on that show....you have been in the business for a hot minute. They offered it to you because too many other celebrities turned it down. I feel sad that America gives this girl so much attention. Sorry Nikki, Steven Tyler was making rap videos before you were born and is one of the people who helped put hip-hop on the world-wide stage. He was a vocalist in the worlds only hip-hopera, redid roots rock reggae for the Bob Marley Tribute, and btw, the cast of judges on Idol that he was advocating was a black guy, a latino girl, and a white dude (Tyler) so you have no point.

Very disappointed that Tyler even acknowledged the childish comment, let alone apologized for it. He certainly won't get a graceful response from her, that's for sure. Maybe his comment was unfair to her, but after how she responded to him, I doubt that. She was playing the race card, pure and simple, because she had nothing else to go on. There wasn't anything REMOTELY racist about what he said, and if that was his intent, he could and would have gone after Mariah as well.

I think they brought her on to start up drama. It's not about having her there for talent, it's about ratings, an area where Idol has been failing lately. She is extremely disrespectful to her elders, first Mariah and now Steven. If he was wrong about her, she could have proven that with a gracious response, but her words just point to him being right about her.
She is loudly seeking attention and nothing else, and hopefully she will burn so many bridges that we'll never hear from her again after a few years.

Stephanie , if that is her natural voice then she must be a robot. She sure sounds like one. When you use that much auto tune on an artist it's to cover the fact that she is low on talent and ability. The same goes for Britney, and a lot of these teen stars who are actors who want to sing too.
There's no talent in minaj . Her lyrics are lame, put to a computer generated back beat that someone else made for her. It's sad but she isn't the most musically talented person on her own record. That person would be the producer who works the mixing board and keeps the auto tune working.
Patrick is exactly right, good ear. I use melodyne on enough folks to know it when I hear it. Even when it's done very well, it is not transparent sonically so there is still evidence of it's use. And Nicki's wasn't really that good – I know what it's like to polish turds with autotune and sometimes you know going in you will reach a point where you must settle. What kills me is this sort of thing used to be reserved for the aspiring 'artist', now it's on the bigger names. Saw her spat with Mariah, now this racist nonsense? If Idol is trying to drum up some kind of controversy for ratings with her then they're failing miserably, this has reaffirmed my decision not to watch over-rated, under-talented wannabe's parade around to accolades while you could check in at any college of music in the US or world and find literally thousands and thousands of men and women shining brilliantly as they perform as many forms of music as there are. Fyi for those who may have the wrong impression about what happens at these schools – university music colleges are not all about 'classical music,' they're there to expand the understanding of what music is and to explore the boundaries of what music can be. There is nothing original about anything that has come out of Idol from day one (even if I do think some of the artists do have solid talent, they're not doing anything with it worthy of recognition. Potential is not enough, that's the easy part and every artist knows this. Years of practice and study (on your own or with training) is what gets someone where they want to go, and pretty much every contestant I've seen on these shows just wants to win a pseudo talent show and skip the becoming a real artist part. Didn't expect to rant, but once I started exploring my thoughts just realized this is what I see and why it bothers me so much. Swear I'm no snob, though I'm sure many will see this post as being crazy snobbish. I could not even begin to describe how many kinds of music I've been fortunate enough to have been exposed to and loved from all over the world and from many different times in history, but there is a minimum standard of craft needed to impress, and I've yet to see an Idol performance or anything Nicki's done to warrant interest. Man I sound like a hater! But I stand my assessment.

Well I think they are both freak shows, but I have to say I'm on Tyler's side here; how his comment on her own lack of diversity or ability to spot true musical talent could be taken as racist is unfathomable. The producers hired her for controversy – period. They think a train wreck is what the show needs to increase it's depleted ratings/viewership. Everybody loves watching a train wreck and the producers know this.

Okay, you have a point here, but blame the Idol producers! Start writing letters, making calls, writing blogs! Put pressure on the powers that be. Minaj will get paid big bucks no matter what your opinion is of her, nor does she care what you and I think. If you really care about the show, give the producers hell for hiring her, then boycott Idol in droves. No ratings; no show. Ranting at Minaj won't get you anywhere but get your frustration out; she'll be on the show regardless.

American Idol has been banned from our home. It was banned immediately once we found out she was hired as a judge. I've been a fan since the first season. Not anymore. Niki Minaj is trash.
