Verdict on 'Liz & Dick'? Successfully bad

Lifetime's "Liz & Dick" has become the TV event viewers love to hate.

There's been a flurry of biting (and, OK, pretty hilarious) commentary about the film leading up to and following its premiere Sunday night, which showed Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor and Grant Bowler as Richard Burton.

Over the course of 90 minutes, the movie swiftly retraced the legendary couple's stormy romance, interspersing the '60s-era story with scenes of the two dressed in black and addressing the camera directly from the grave.

It's not often a Lifetime production draws such an overwhelming amount of attention, and in this case it's due to "Liz & Dick" having Lohan as its star right as the 26-year-old actress works to turn her career around.

Yet while Lohan's talked at length about relating to Taylor's mega-wattage celebrity, when it came time for the world to witness the raspy-voiced actress as the late violet-eyed beauty few seemed to be buying it.

"From the moment she and Grant Bowler [as Richard Burton] sat side by side facing the camera in some mock-interview about their lives, a wall went up between Lohan and us: Is it years of ducking tabloid photographers that has frozen her face into a blank stare?" critiqued Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker of what he found to be a "peculiar, drab, damp little TV movie." "No effort seems to have gone into Lohan's preparation other than to have her eyes tinted Liz-violet."

Casting Lohan as Dame Taylor was a surefire way to draw viewers, said the New York Times' Alessandra Stanley, but she also thought that "Liz & Dick" could've been worse. It wasn't terrible enough to be "entertainingly campy," and the casting didn't help.

Using Lohan to portray Dame Taylor is "not a kindness to that actress, who fails to deliver the kind of breakthrough performance that augurs a comeback ... She isn't ridiculous in the role, and her eyes do look violet, but she is oddly passive, sleepwalking through scenes that call for passion and caprice." Bowler as Burton, meanwhile, offers a "pallid impersonation."

Time's James Poniewozik agreed that one can't definitively call "Liz & Dick" the "worst TV movie of the year" - there are cable public-access productions he hasn't watched, after all - but he does think that the makeup mole on Lohan added more to her credibility as Taylor than her acting.

"When Lohan is made up and still - slinking in a doorway, glowering into a mirror - the illusion is nearly complete. But when she opens her mouth, it’s all over," Poniewozik said. "Lohan simply never becomes another person the length of the movie: whether she’s meant to be showing spunk or pique or passion, she gives nearly every line the flat delivery of the first read-through of a high-school play." But to be fair, she couldn't "make a movie this bad by herself."

The Wrap's Tim Molloy placed blame with the script. "[Lohan] isn't good, but no one could be good with this dialogue," Molloy said. "['Liz & Dick' is] redundant and boring in a way that no star could save."

People magazine, however, pegged Lohan as the survivor in this scenario. "Completely miscast ... Lohan makes a reckless but brave dive into a pool that anyone can see is empty," said Tom Gliatto. "But Lohan, despite all her career troubles, is still a star."

Did you watch "Liz & Dick" last night? What'd you think?

No chemistry – bad writing – worse acting. The only highlight was the costumes. It just didn't work at all. Whomever did the casting should pick another career – he/she totally missed the mark.

SHE SUCKED..."SURPRISE!" Not at all. Who and why would anyone cast her as Elizabeth Taylor??? It was an insult to such a beautiful, giving, super talented woman. Lohan didn't even make it up the first rung of a small step ladder in her so called portrayal of Liz.. I'm so glad Elizabeth didn't see that. Linsay Lohan couldn't act her way out of a paper bag in any film. I've never seen her give a good performance in any film or show she was on. Yes, the writing, obviously directing, and editing (jumped around to much) wasn't good but that was no excuse and had nothing to do with "her performance" she just can't act. I have to admit I was hoping she'd do a better job than she did but knew she wouldn't be able to nail Liz. I just don't think she has what it takes to be a good actress, get a new job Linsay. I do wish her the best in the future though. Hope she can pull her personal problems together.

Grant Bowler did a great job. If you doubt this, watch some video of Richard Burton, his interviews rather than his movie roles, because, don't forget, Bowler was depicting him in his everyday life.

Lindsay's Taylor wasn't quite as effective, but it was pretty good for a poorly-scripted TV movie.

It's a real shame that Lindsay has squandered so much of her career, and continues to sabotage it with her antics.

Yes, the supporting cast was good. Lindsay definitely did not channel Liz. After watching the movie, hard to believe that Richard loved Elizabeth. I thought of him as a user. His brother in this movie summed it up several times...Two people who over spend. Liz may have been generous to the AIDs charity later in her life but that does not make up for all the excess. It happens today. Some celebrities are overpaid and it goes to their head. Case in point, Lindsay Lohan. She was a good child actress but I see no growth.

Having a person like Lohan in any role is a bad choice. Complete garbage, not the movie or better said bad try of a movie, but Lohan herself is not talented and should just go away. I think her role should be at Krispy Kreme making the Olympic Rings out of Donuts, oh no she probably doesn't even know that there are olympic rings. I guess at the end she has no talent and no qualifications for a real life.
Let me correct that she does have qualifications: Drug abuse + Alcoholism = people will talk about her. This way her staff at least has a future supplying her for a couple more years until she says goodbye.

No person can play Elizabeth Taylor through an entire movie. It was foolish to even try. Lohan did not have her voice, her wallk or much of anything else. The producers of this movie should never have made it-nor should they have exposed Lohan in this manner. I do believe Lohan can be a godd actress-but totally in a different movie. I think that whomever produced this fillm was simply trying to get ratings at the expense of Lohan. Yes, she could of done Linda Lovelace well-but we will never know.

The lifetime channel does not have a Steven Spielberg budget!!! Get real people! Stop glamorizing Elisabeth Taylor, she had many faults, two big ones come to mind, like destroying two marriages, she wasn't a saint. The movie was EXACTLY what it was meant to be....A movie made for television, targeting lifetime viewers, so in that sense, it was a huge success!

God – anyone who thinks Lohan looks remotely like Taylor is either blind or a colossal idiot. From what I remember -Taylor during that period wasn't a freckled, bloated, double-chinned, jowly, fish lipped freak. The only effort they made in the looks department were the violet tinted contacts. But like lipstick on a pig...
Oh – and her acting was atrocious. I was embarrassed for the poor guy playing Burton. He must have been mortified playing aside such an amateur. Lindsay Lohan is over...finally.

In fact Liz Taylor was short, flat butt, annoying voice, the only good thing was the color of her eyes, Violets. In addition she was an alcoholic, married man eater, at the end she was so desperate for company that she was dating any man who cleaned her house. So, Lindsay Lohan did a good job in this movie.

If they were serious about making a movie about Liz Taylor and Richard Burton they would have cast Mila Kunis in the roll of Liz. With Lohan in this roll it's a slap in the face of the people who made Hollywood.

I watched the commercials. Was the show any better? Too bad they didn’t promote this as an old Hollywood style “B” movie…filled with bad acting, bad dialog and second rate actors. Their viewership would have doubled and we would have all been in on the joke!
Like I said, just watching the promo’s for this show was enough for me…it told me everything I needed to know…and that was to simply skip the finished product!

So was this some trying to bale Lindsay out. She is a Hollywood bad girl and no one wants to hire her; so I guess this was a "feel sorry for Lindsay" moment. Can you imagine what they had to pay Lords of London in insurance money. She is good for bad press and that is all.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I didn't think it was THAT bad. What threw me off was Lindsay couldn't get the voice/accent down. I thought she definitely looked the part and the acting wasn't award winning, but it wasn't atrocious either. I think people just like to trash Linsday, not that she doesn't bring it on herself. If anyone can identify with Elizabeth Taylor, it's Lindsay right? Besides its Lifetime people, not Steven Spielberg. Maybe this wasn't the stellar comeback she was hoping for, but is that her fault or the writing/directing/editing? Look she's trying, so lets get off her back. I think she is a good actress, she just needs to find the right role and keep on trying.

I thought the same thing – her accent, Lindsey didn't even try. And she basically just read the script. She was fine in the looks department, but that was it. I always thought that Stockard Channing would have made a real good Elizabeth Taylor, had there been a biography about here years back. I remember that Liz wrote that there would be no biographies about her while she was alive.

I watched the movie just for curiosity because Lohan was in it. And I wasn't a bit surprised by the awlful acting. All she did was sniffle with that horrible nasal voice and that did it for me. I thought the actor who played Richard Burton, did a fantastic job! He spoke just like Richard and had alot of emotion in his words! His acting made Lindsay look like a total amateur! She lacked emotion, she just said her lines with very littl;e emotion! She should have trained more for the role, her voice was terrible, which made it extra hard to believe in the movie! However, it was free and it was entertaining, and unlike others I did enjoy the movie as it moved at a great pace, and it was not boring! Why the world is so in love with LIndsay, I will never know. I think Megan Fox would have been great as the young Liz anyway, plus she is a much better actress!

Every once in a while, an actor comes along in a biographical film, and they become truly immersed in their work to a point in which the audience can no longer decipher the actor from the character. Lindsay Lohan is not one of those actors. You are no Ben Kingsley in “Gandhi,” sweet pea.

I had the misfortune of watching this “film” yesterday. I guess you should only expect so much from a Lifetime film.

Most scenes probably were no longer than a minute. My reaction was “Oh, A NEW SCENE!…and now, it’s gone.” about every 30 seconds. There wasn’t much in the way of plot development. Within the first fifteen minutes, Liz & Dick go from hating each other to making out in front of the cast and crew of Cleopatra. How did it happen? Nobody knows…

Then, there’s the score. A very odd score. Here you are, watching two people running back and forth between each other’s trailers, and they’ve got cutesy music playing in the background, as if what they’re doing is completely innocent and childlike. THEY’RE HAVING AN AFFAIR! Imagine if your spouse cheated on you, Lifetime made a movie about it, and they framed the affair using THAT music. Cut that stuff off!

There was something strange about watching Lindsay and Grant Bowler on screen . There was something like a seven-year age gap between Richard Burton and Liz Taylor. Almost two decades separate Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler. Maybe it was the makeup, but there was a gross May-December, almost pedophilic relationship vibe that was uncomfortable to watch.

On the topic of makeup, does LiLo’s makeup artist know how to apply foundation? In many scenes, I was distracted by her forehead, which was significantly darker than her cheeks. And the eye makeup was amateurish at best. Liz’s makeup did not look like someone’s five-year-old took a blunt crayon to her face.

I wanted to give Lilo the benefit of the doubt, but her “acting” was awful. My guess is that the director dyed her hair and said “Okay, Lindsay, do what you do best. Roll cameras,” and let her tear the hell out of the place. The husky voice was not AT ALL Liz. The only word I could use to describe her line delivery was “superficial.” She said her lines as if she were reading a grocery list – quickly, without emotion, seemingly without trying to channel Ms. Taylor at all.

I found you comments rather odd. Degrading a woman who was nominated four times and won an Academy Award, then gushing over a young woman who has allowed her personal demons to negatively impact her acting. Lohan has not lived up to any of her early promise, whereas Taylor went from National Velvet to icon.

I disagree. Elizabeth Taylor was a good actress. Her performance ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ was excellent. Especially so knowing that she had been ill and that Mike Todd was killed early during the production. She absolutely deserved the Academy Award for ‘Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?’. There has never been a woman in Hollywood more beautiful than Elizabeth Taylor. The millions of lives touched by her Aids activism and the hospital in Botswana [built by her with the sale of the Taylor-Burton Diamond] know she was just as beautiful on the inside.

Elizabeth Taylor wasn't a good actress? You can't be serious! I just watched "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" this weekend on TCM and she was mesmerizing. Additionally, she was the most beautiful woman to ever grace the movie screen. When I first heard that Lindsay Lohan had been cast to play her, I couldn't believe it. Her looks are no match for Ms. Taylor and her gravely voice made her an even more unlikely candidate for this role. I didn't watch the Lifetime movie, but knew it would be unsuccessful due to miscasting of Ms. Lohan. Can't imagine how the people in charge of making this film thought anyone would possibly identify Ms. Lohan with Elizabeth Taylor.

Honestly, I don't always have the most highbrow taste...I loved old films like "Valley of the Dolls," and wish this movie had whatever the magic of an X factor is - I guess a great story written well and great acting. I've loved acting and movies that have been sliced, diced & skewered by the critics and the public and so wanted to get into this one. I adored Elizabeth (a dear late friend of mine worked for her & only had amazing things to say about the woman), adored Richard Burton, and tried so hard to get into this movie which I DVR'd. I still haven't seen the last 30 minutes or so. It failed to engage me at all. Poor Lindsay Lohan - it is tragic that someone with such promise seems to have imploded. I wanted to enjoy this – just like I wanted to enjoy other train wrecks like "Ishtar" and "Showgirl." I'm not even sure this can become high camp one day. It is that bad.

Eventually we'll realize that Lohan isn't an actress, she's a trainwreck and people don't watch her for her acting ability, but to watch her long, slow decline on screen. Five minutes of watching her will tell you there are 10,000 better high school drama queens waiting in the wings to give better performances, but her name still draws eyeballs...because they're waiting for the train to derail before their eyes.

I wouldn't even waste my time watching that show! Lohan as Taylor? Really what were they thinking? She is a second rate hack of an actress who couldn't hold a candle to Taylor. She isn't worthy enough to wipe Taylors butt. Lifetime should be ashamed of them selves for even airing it.

It wasn't JUST Lohan (although Lohan seemed to whine her way through the part.) Bowler way over acted (maybe he was compensating for Lohan?). For "the love story of the century" there was ZERO spark between them.

But I think the main problem was the writing. It was really really bad. I don't think that even the REAL Liz and Dick could have saved it.

In the end, it bored US.

I only had to see a clip. It was the worse movie I have ever never saw because the clip was enough to show this actress or reality star because there was no acting involved sounded like a drone.

I can pretend someone is another person if that person can act and there have been many actors pull off these kinds of rolls but, neither of these actors did bad script or not.

I don't think you have to worry about Lindsey being nominated for anything, except worst actress. She never really had any talent to begin with, and this just proves that she is yesterday's news. Of course, you could see this train wreck coming from the moment she was cast. It's sad that what could have been an interesting movie was reduced to this by Lifetime, the directors and actors. Lohan should go back to playing lesbian – she does that pretty well.

I tuned in to it for 5 minutes and was horrified. Agree with other comments that it was an insult to both Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Even as she sat in that director's chair for the phony "interview", she couldn't look remotely like Elizabeth Taylor, who had beautiful poise and deportment. Lindsey's voice was raspy and vacuous. From what I saw of the movie, it makes perfect sense to me that Lindsey is responsible for trashing Elizabeth Taylor's dressing room. Just disgusting.
The only person I can think of who has close to the beauty of Elizabeth Taylor, though different, is Cathrine Zeta Jones. Perhaps she could take something like that on. What a debacle. It hurt my eyes and my ears!
The people responsible for this movie owe the families of Burton and Taylor major apologies...

Anything would be preferable to watching this formerly-hot-mess-turned train-wreck stumble zombie-like through yet another low-budget TV movie. If the budget wasn't low, then... why?!?!?

Lindsay was so awkward for this role. She just has too big of an image preceding her to be able to play the equally large image of Liz. Grant Bowler's Richard Burton was very intriguing, and he really nailed the voice. But Lohan's Taylor was an utter failure. The voice was soooo far off, and her whole demeanor was that of a modern mall girl playing dress up with a trunk of her rich grandma's old clothes from the '60s.

Then why portray her- and not just be "anyone" when doing a biography- the point is TO sound like the person- and take on the persons mannerisms. "Wasn't a good actress"...... Did you ever see "Jane Eyre" or "National Velvet" or "Little Women" or "Father of the Bride" or "A place in the Sun" or "Giant" or "Raintree County" or "Suddenly Last Summer" or "Butterfield 8" perhaps "Who's Afraid of Virginia wolf",,,, Maybe you had NO idea she was nominated for 6 Academy Awards- Winning 2, 6 Golden Globes Winning 4, and winning 5 Golden Laurel Awards PLUS The Kennedy Center Honors..... I haven't seen this but I did see Chanel and it was muchado about nothing. The Shirley MacLaine performance was certainly as good as you could possibly do with something so badly scripted. I'm not sure what Lifetime executives do – but here is my message to them: stop interfering. Pick top notch directors, let the writers do what they do well – write. Use well researched material. If the person is particularly well known for heave sakes make sure your script and the research behind it is spot-on. Next the editing just has to be superb along with the music. I find for whatever reason that Lifetime movies tend to be bad and formulaic and that's the fault of the Lifetime executives. Sponsors and cable providers should give them one choice: either improve quality and deliver more belivable product or become irrelevant and unemployed. Seems pretty simple to me.

Blame whatever casting agency picked these two – neither had the professional stones to portray Taylor & Burton. Those two had real talent, especially him. They should just have had an affair and walked away from any thought of marriage. He needed a crutch and she only needed a bed partner and a mirror. Surely with all the great British actors out there they could have picked a better Burton. And Taylor deserved an actress with more depth than Lohan. If they were remaking "Cleopatra", who would they have chosen?

As bad as it was, don't forget what came before the show aired. A writer said 'I've got their story'. A Casting Director said 'I've got the actors.'
A director told the actors what s/he wanted in the scene. At some point, that Director said 'Cut & Print'.
He and an Editor sat down and picked what THEY thought were the best performances of those filmed.
THAT became what you watched on TV.
A good Director can overcome a lousy script. Howard Hawks was a genius at doing just that. Look at the performance he pulled out of Bacall and Bogart on what was one of Hemingway's WORST efforts.
Lohan can be a great actress. She has to decide if she wants to be a movie star or a Tabloid star. This performance tells me she hasn't made that decision yet.

I was actually rooting for Lindsay. I thought the writing didn't inspire any real great acting on both sides, Burton/Liz. It was cheesy. Someone should be mentioning that just as much as the blah acting. It didn't make much sense either that they had Lindsay looking the same at the beginning of the movie as they did at the end, so the makeup artists and costume folks are also to blame. In fact the director and producers are to blame too for allowing it all to happen. There was just so much wrong in addition to the acting. I mean were there not enough people screening the movie before it went public?

I think at moments Lindsay was a dead ringer for Liz and she mimicked her body language well. I think she just needed a voice coach to help her "find" Liz's lower, mature, sophisticated, 1950's voice. Liz had a very theatrical, approaching British, accent that brimmed with sophistication and maturity. The pitch was also lower than Lindsay's which add a serious sophistication. The only problem I had with Lindsay's performance was that her voice sounded very, very young and very, very contemporary. I think if she had been guided to explore Liz 's voice the performance would have been enhanced.

I say take the 10 bucks you got paid and put them on a savings account because you will not be working much after this.

I think some people are just bullies. Ms. Lohan was trying to do the her best to come back ater all stuff that she has been through over the past couple of years. At least she stuck with it and because of all the stuff that both these women have gone through it made them stronger. Maybe Ms. Lohan can learn rom this experience and I hope that she will decide to do tv series or movie because she should not give up.
    Keep moving forward Lindsey

I would rather see Lindsay Lohan in this movie Liz & Dick than to see any other movie stars whom are overpayed, over rated, and boring with big egos. On the contrary Lindsay was just refreshing, fun, talented for this movie. I am so glad she made a come back and hope she stays out of trouble, she is really a very talented lady.

As a mature man who remembers diva Elizabeth Taylor well, I was hopeful that Lindsay was going to pull out the stops on this role. I managed to sit through 20 minutes of the movie, but only because the other performances and direction were pretty good.... but nowhere close to saving the film from Lohan's wooden performance. Where Liz spoke in a raspy voice, she also had flawless pronunciation, clarity and elocution on her side. Lohan slurred her words, ran words together and occasionally mumbled in "valley girl" fashion.. Her appearance lacking the elegance and classic poise that was a hallmark of Liz... Lohan just a mock imitation.. and that's being kind.

"Liz and Dick" was an abomination to the memory of Ms. Taylor and Mr. Burton. Elizabeth Tayor made some of the greatest movies of the 1950's and 1960's; Butterfield 8, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, etc. Instead of creating an immature and juvenile characticure of Ms. Taylor, possibly Lilo should go home and watch some of those movies to see what a real actress does for a living.

It was a flop, and this movie should have never been made with Lohan playing Taylor. Lohan is not an actress, perhaps when she was young, like in Herbie, and all the disney youth films. In the real acting world, it's a waste of time to see her on the screen trying to be an actress. She has no talent. The people who made Taylors life with Richard Burton should be all booed. It was a joke of a film. All of what Lohan did, to portray Taylor made it seem like a joke, and that's disrespectful. You want to portray a legend, then do it right with the right actress, rather than tear down the true people in life who really had a lot of passion between the two of them. They had tempers, but what they felt and expressed still exuded love for each other. This was a complete disgrace. Hope we don't have to suffer and see anymore of Lohan on the screen. She gives acting a bad taste.

Just to start off I'm no Lohan fan and yes at times I thought she wasn't bringing her A game. It felt like she was acting for a high-school play. But there were times in the movie that her acting was superb. It's the directors job to pull those performances out of actors so the director deserves some of the blame for the performance (or there lack of). But in the end regardless of the performances it drew large viewing audiences and isn't that really the goal? And this is coming from someone who loathes Lifetime.

I watched the first hour of Liz/Dick, and I honestly think your mom could act better than Lindsay can.

Lindsay seems like she has no acting experience at all. Her voice has no emotion, like she's just reading the script for the first time. If you've seen her SNL stint, then you have an idea how terrible the acting is here. It's similarly bad.

The plot: A washed up, has been, drug addled former child actress with a rap sheet a block long tries to jump start her career by acting in poorly written, knock-off biopics. She thinks she's a talented actress when in reality she's horrible. None of her handlers want to jeopardize their gravy train by telling her the truth so she goes blissfully through life never realizing that she's the laughing stock of the internet. The audience on the one hand cringes at how incredibly bad she is and how terribly sad her life is and on the other hand laughs uncontrollably at the spontaneous critiques posted on social networking sites all the while wondering whether she'll ever catch a clue and figure out what's being done to her.

It was a Lifetime movie, you were expecting an Oscar performance? The sad part of it was how uninvolved Lohan from the time that I spent watching, and for that, one should blame the director. I have seen her other movies, so I know that she can bring something to a role besides dispassion, so the only one who can be held responsible is the director for not giving her a clearer idea of how to bring this character to life.

But, I found it to be a great story and I enjoyed the way it was presented? Weher he eyes the right color? Did she mimic the accent? I don't know, but because I had no expectations I was free to enjoy it for what it is.

The real life couple must have been incredible from what I saw and it was really a study in the psychology of gluttony.

When people have too much wealth, it becomes an anchor and drags us down. Dick and Liz had too much wealth and power and not enough humility.
