Kenan Thompson comedy in the works at NBC

Kenan Thompson could become the next "Saturday Night Live" star to command his own comedy at NBC.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels is working with Thompson on a scripted single-camera series that Thompson would write, star in and executive produce.

The 34-year-old actor would play a married New Yorker called Kenan Monroe who gives up his city life to move in with his in-laws in the suburbs. Presumably, generational comedy would ensue from there.

(Hearing that he'll once again play a character named Kenan will undoubtedly make fans of Thompson's '90s Nickelodeon show hope that Kel Mitchell will make an appearance. Or is that just us?)

As of now, Thompson, who came to fame on sitcoms like "Sister, Sister," Nickelodeon's "Kenan & Kel" and the network's sketch comedy "All That," has a script commitment at NBC for the untitled project.

NBC has also given another "SNL" vet an opportunity to branch out, as it put in script orders for a comedy written by Seth Meyers and his brother Josh back in August. Like with Thompson, Lorne Michaels is also on board to executive produce the Meyers brothers' comedy.

Loved Keenan as the scared straight convict who always mixed up movies with his own experiences by saying, "cause this is real."

What would be funny is if he started as a life guard at a swimming pool.

Not to be the jerk here, but he was only on one episode of Sister, Sister, which was a terrible show.

Keenan Thompson is funny minus his horrible 'What's up with that" sketch. However, come on Lorne a black version of "Everybody Loves Raymond" except instead of the wife living next to the in-laws, he move in with the in-laws? Think of something original!

Woo-hoo! Keenan is the most underrated talent on SNL–he is the only actor who is just as good at playing the straight/deadpanning guy as he is playing a flamboyant character. Many of the big recurring characters during his tenure owe their success in part to him. For example, in the Target Lady sketches, he was always the "regular" guy in line reacting to her antics. A lot of the other actors fall flat when they are not the center of attention in a particular sketch. Looking forward to his show.

He also starred as "Rerun" on What's Happening. That's where he developed the cool dance moves he has used on two seasons of Dancing With The Stars.
