Jeremy Renner just made a great case for a "Glee" cameo, as he blew us away with his singing over the weekend on "Saturday Night Live."
While his comedic abilities didn't really shine for some critics, his vocals stood out. (You can watch his monologue here.)
The 41-year-old actor, who received Oscar nods for both "The Town" and "The Hurt Locker," opened his monologue by performing theme songs he'd written - more like remixed - for his latest hits.
"If I laugh in one of my movies, somebody dies, but that's why I'm excited to be here tonight, to show everyone that there's another side to me," Renner said. "I play a little piano, and my dream actually is to write and perform theme songs for one of my movies - you know like Adele did for James Bond."
So for "The Bourne Legacy," Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" became, "I’ve been running around , trying to take down the CIA. They won’t leave me alone, I’m not from Treadstone, need to get away ... You know I’m gonna shoot somebody, someone like you ..."
And for "The Avengers," Renner came up with the lyrics: "The Avengers, they're always there ... from The Hulk, to Iron Man, to Captain Amer." (Yep, just "Amer" - he had to rhyme it with "there," clearly.)
Needless to say, they were all rejects. We loved his musical skills, though!
But once he moved past his opening monologue, his performance was more hit-or-miss. Entertainment Weekly thought the episode was "painful" to watch, while the Los Angeles Times felt Renner was out of his element with some bits. Zap2It was impressed, but considered "The Californians" sketch to be among Renner's weakest.
Next week, "Saturday Night Live" will have another talented singer/actor on as host: Jamie Foxx.
