Watch: New 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' trailerAfter getting a taste of director Sam Raimi’s “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” a new, longer trailer for the James Franco vehicle has hit the Web. Like the teaser trailer that debuted in July - and, of course, 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” - the trailer starts out in black-and-white Kansas before arriving in the colorful land of Oz. [[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DylgNj4YQVc]] There, Franco’s Oz meets a woman (Mila Kunis) who identifies herself as “Theodora, the good witch." “You don’t know much about witches, do you?” she retorts after Oz asks where her broom is. From there we get a glimpse of the Emerald City, some talking crows and a meeting with witch No. 2, Theodora’s sister Evanora, played by Rachel Weisz. Evanora, who appears to go up against Michelle Williams’ Glinda (witch No. 3) in a magical duel, promises Oz a fortune if he can defeat the wicked witch. With help from his friends, which include a flying monkey and a porcelain doll (voiced by Zach Braff and young actress Joey King, respectively), Oz sets out to achieve greatness. Yes, I'll definitely see it, but like other posters, I don't expect it can compete with something that has become a classic mainly due to Judy Garland, but just as importantly, Margaret Hamilton (aka, The Wicked Witch of The West).
Some of the dialogue is a little too 21st century "...You don't know much about witches, do you?" which is pretty sarcastic for a "good" witch, and lacks any of the charm of the original Glinda, played by Billie Burke, the actress who exuded goodness.
Nonetheless, I wish it the best of luck, and hope that it is, at the very least, a good movie, worthy of the original, even if portrayed from the position of the wizard (much like "Wicked" is portrayed from the perspective of the supposed Wicked Witch of the West, who, in the book, is, in the daughter of the equivalent of The Pope, and actually, an activist who SAVES the Cowardly Lion from being dissected, turns the Tin Man into tin after he is stabbed thru the heart by someone else, etc.). There is room to re-cast the classics, but my only wish is that the screenwriters wouldn't pander to 21st century dialogue. Oz should be a land of magic, and magical terms are generally bereft of real-world colloquials.
A classic remade. Cannot wait to see the new film.
i'm not sure if i'd pay money to see this, bottom line. a wonderful movie about the wizard of oz already has been made, quite successfully.
given that the end of the original movie showed us that the witches and the monkeys and the emerald city all were components of an elaborate dream caused when dorothy sustained a head-knock during the big twister, i don't see how you can start off anything from that dream segment ... since we already know it never existed.
maybe they're gong to have dorothy be 50 and going into alzheimers and that's how she can return to a dream that never existed. then there would be a point to pre-quellng something that never happened.
in short, i hate this cliche as well, but darned if hollywood doesn't continue to prove that they are out of ideas. and yet you folks still shell out $25 for a ticket and another $25 for a coke and a popcorn. ... i should pat you on the back for helping to stimulate the economy, i suppose :>
In the original book, it isn't a dream, Oz is real. Dorothy goes back a couple of times, even staying there permanently in the series.
I love all of the people who complain about Hollywood being unoriginal when it comes to this movie. Guess what? Your beloved "original" wasn't even original!
The Oz books were made into about ten movies before the Judy Garland film in 1939. So stating that Hollywood is "out of ideas" is extremely ironic, given that the "original" was not by any means the first Oz movie ... and that ALL Oz films are based on written works.

Stop complaining, people! This isn't a remake of the original! It's a prequel! Which is a good idea so we can learn more about the "Wizard". I think the idea was a fantastic one! I cannot wait to see this! And, you know what? I hope they remake the original, AND make more movies after that! This could be the next new saga now that Harry Potter and Twilight are finished! I'm very excited!
But i tell you that the wizard of oz is a book and there's not a second book. And we have a new trilogy The Hobbit , lets see if its good.
Amused at all the people freaking out. This is NOT a remake of the original (I agree that the original movie is a classic that could NEVER be remade properly!). Also, rhyna's wrong–L. Frank Baum's series includes FOURTEEN books, not just the first one...there's a whole world of Oz that has never been explored on film. This actually could be really interesting.

I think this will be good but I do wish Hollywood come up with an original idea and not just re-doing the classics

APB; if you listen in the trailer Oscar Zoroaster Diggs is going to Kansas, thats where he's traveling to in the hot air ballon when he gets sucked up by the tornado.

I'm sorry. I had to visit yucky relatives. I didn't shake their hands though or hug them. I bet they might have cold if flu germs on em. Germs are bad. Even if you try them in frosted flakes cereal they aren't too good. That's why I stick with eating buggers. Them thangs are pure d licious. Mmmmmm buggers.

When you go to a 3D movie it is also a good idea to bring your own glasses. If you have to use a special type of glasses someone else has worn then it is probably just best to leave. Lots of bad germs out there these days.

I don't ever go to theaters. It's a good way to catch the flu. Too many people in an enclosed space coughing and sneezing. Plus no telling who sat in the movie chair before you. Waaaaay to many germs.
