One Direction: Like a young Rolling Stones?

The music is different, but the intense fandom for One Direction isn't far off from the screaming fans who would mob the Rolling Stones, says the band's legendary frontman, Mick Jagger.

The rocker has picked up on the recent fervor for 1D, as the five-member group is called, and Jagger told CNN at Tuesday's premiere of the film "Crossfire Hurricane" that the group reminds him of his band's younger years.

"I watched a concert of One Direction on the TV the other night, you know just to check [it] out," Jagger said. "It reminded me very much of our early concerts, when we were pushed around among the audience and we would kind of float. [T]hey were like, floating above the audience, and they looked like, really distinctly uncomfortable."

The teen band of the moment may change, but history still has a way of repeating itself, Jagger continued.

"I remember feeling that same uncomfortable feeling of being pushed around in this very weird place about 50 years ago," he said. "It was a very funny moment, because it was very similar to the things we’ve been through."

Both Jagger and Ronnie Wood agree that up-and-comers like One Direction - who will star in their own 3-D movie to be directed by Morgan Spurlock - can offer a lot of inspiration to established artists like themselves. Wood added that he counts the young band members among his "pals."

"I remember them before they made it and I said, 'come on stick with it boys, you can do it,'" Wood said. "They still want me to come and jam with them I said, 'yeah, I’ll come and play with you anytime.'"

At the moment, the Rolling Stones are busy with 50th anniversary performances, which will stretch from London to New York over the next month. (Jagger joked to Billboard magazine that his "idea of the tour is calling it, 'F*** Off, We're 50.'")

Their longevity is something they couldn't have predicted when they were starting out, Jagger said, and Keith Richards added that they're not ready to retire yet.

"Who will call it quits will be the public," Richards said at the premiere. "Not us – when they say we’ve had enough of you, we’ll disappear gracefully."

"Crossfire Hurricane," which chronicles the Rolling Stones’ ride to rock stardom in the early '60s, will debut on HBO Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.

  4. They'll be ok.

they are 2 completely different bands..in a crazy way they need each other. there will be good times and eventually be decent bands who can truly understand each other as bands.

One direction indeed, right into obscurity. These young fools won’t be able to book old age homes in a few months. They better get their GED’s now. If they’re being mentioned in CNN that means they’re already toast. These kids will be cleaning septic tanks and pushing lawn mowers next summer when the music career is long gone.

Who in the world is this guy kidding? A year or two maybe, a couple of hits, but really compare these young clowns to the Rolling Stones? Ridiculous,

Mick has lost it, to compare One Direction to the Stones is lame even for him. I understand the comparison he was making, and the validity of it, but he underplays the legacy of his own band by even making the comparison. Sad.

The kids are cute and everything but they don't have any real musical talent. Who writes their songs? Who plays their music? How can you compare singing kids to a real band? Backstreet, New Kids, N-Sync are all gone. It's just a matter of time. The Stones, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd are all still going strong.

I guess Mick will take any publicity that keeps the Stones in the press. comparing these no talent twits to a band in any way let alone the Stones is a insult to anybody who has ever picked up a guitar and tried to play rock and roll. these no talents would not know what to do with a guitar if you handed 1 to them. who is the idiot who coined the term boy band anyway? he should be locked into a room and made to listen to these and all the others untill he comes to his senses and begs to hear a real band. call these and all the other boy toys anything but a band!

  19. whatever

even putting this joke of a boy band in the SAME freaking sentence with one of the greatest rock bands of all time is disgusting, shameful and ignorant. these knobs will be forgotten in 5 years and the stones.. well if you really need to be told about the importance of the stones in music history then you should really find a way out of the taliban. good lord.. just reading that made me regurgitate a little.

Just because their genre is Pop and the Rolling Stones is rock doesn't mean One Direction is any less of a band. Don't be calling people ignorant when you are too. Bands have changed over the years, don't be stuck in the past. They aren't a legend yet, its true, just give them time. Try listening to some other songs instead of just hearing one and judging. Little things is pretty deep, at least it is for girls. I'm sure you'd get angry if someone said that about the Rolling Stones. Their voices really are good, you just haven't heard them without all the auto-tune and stuff, its really good.

      @Samantha

I've listened to them and trust me they are not anything special. They sound like every boy band for the 25 years. I've been awhile on this planet and know a thing or two about music. One Direction will end up going the same route as Take That. They will have a couple of hits and then fall into obscurity only to pop up every so often for a reunion tour.

The only way a "fake" band like this compares to the Stones is in the amount of tail they'll get. Otherwise, someone will have to sell their soul to Satan for them to be around more than 5 years. At least Simon Cowel will get the last laugh all the way to the bank. Now, if you'll excuse me while I light one up and chill to the greatest band on earth, THE ROLLING STONES!

I remember when bands played instruments...wrote songs...had a singer that could really sing. Can any of these "boys" play bass? Ronnie Wood has more talent than these 5 combined plus all the studio musicians and programmers involved in their album. Yes, just the bassist.
