How Anne Hathaway lost 25 pounds for 'Les Mis'As she celebrates her 30th birthday Monday, Anne Hathaway's feeling pretty satisfied. She may be 25 pounds lighter and without a cascading mane - with hair and body fat being two things she shed for her role in Tom Hooper's "Les Misérables" - but she's married her "true love," Adam Shulman, and is set to premiere Christmas Day in the role of her dreams with "Les Mis."
Hathaway and Shulman, 31, wed in September in Big Sur, California, after dating for three years. And when she says "true love," the actress tells Vogue in its new issue, she means it: "the full-on romantic, till-death-do-us-part real deal." The interview was conducted before her November 12 birthday, but Hathaway was already easing into the big 3-0 with glee. "I’m turning 30, and - I hope this isn’t obnoxious to say - I feel prettier, and much more myself," she says. "I guess I just feel much more satisfied with less now.” It's a good thing she was able to adopt that outlook, because playing the role of Fantine in "Les Mis" demanded that the actress first drop 10 pounds, and then another 15 in two weeks with what Vogue describes as a "near-starvation diet" made up of "two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste" per day. That's serious dedication, but there weren't other options, Hathaway explained. "I had to be obsessive about it - the idea was to look near death,” she tells the magazine. “Looking back on the whole experience - and I don’t judge it in any way - it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway.” As one can imagine, that devotion to becoming her character did leave Hathaway with some reality re-entry issues. "I was in such a state of deprivation - physical and emotional. When I got home, I couldn’t react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed. It took me weeks till I felt like myself again," Hathaway says. But that's where her now-husband stepped in. "The first time I really threw everything into a part, which was when I did 'Rachel Getting Married,' there was no one waiting for me when I got back. This time, Adam was there," she recalls. "He gets what I do and who I am and supports me in it, and that’s pretty awesome.” They just tied the knot, but the 30-year-old knows she wants kids. "I want to be a mother, and I anticipate loving my children quite fiercely," she says. "I think about it all the time, though it’s a silly thing to think about because the kind of mother I’ll be depends on the kind of children I have. I can’t wait to meet them.” |

Just goes to show, it's as easy as putting down the fork, ladies.
Hope you take the hint.
she needd to lose 20lbs anyway.
I'm really shocked that the movie's producers would allow her to lose that much weight. There are many things they could have done to make her look emaciated. Using make up to make her face look shallow as well as larger clothes so they appear to be hanging on her would probably have worked just fine.
season of love and happiness....
She stated that the kind of mother she becomes is dependent upon the type of children she ends up having. This is very insightful, especially for someone without children yet.
i NEED TO LOSE 10-LBS
How can the supposedly 31 year old Anne Hathaway be celebrating her 30th birthday?
It is Shulman that's 31.
Try reading a little more closely . . it says her husband is 31, not her
If I had a wife making millions of dollars from one movie, I'd be there and be very very supportive too. This man ain't to dumb.
I'd guess she is getting at least $10M to play this role. I'm sure most of us would volunteer to be locked in a cage until we lost that weight, for less! Of course, most of us un-svelt could lose 25# just by skipping one nightly snack...
I'm sure a doctor, nutritionist, and a staff of trainers and assistants came with the diet. Models, actors, athletes and other pros starve themselves all the time. Mostly they just need the motivation.
to deal with that mess
I get so concerned about actors who feel the need to deprive themselves of food and/or safe nutrition for a freakin' movie role.
I have been seriously underweight before – dropped from muscular 165 to 145 and lower counting my ribs all the way up and having my head be look 25% larger than the rest of my body, not for a role just for being brutally underfinanced my 1st years in NYC.
It messes with your head, how you feel and how your body reacts to things.
To me, Bale has done this and others besides Hathaway. It is dangerous and frankly it sets a dangerous example of an "acceptable" reason for being severely underweight.
If they can invent a camera that can turn its actors into blue aliens with tails, you'd think they could come up with one that doesn't make an actor look 10 pounds heavier.
Its all about you isn't it.
your number 3 or 4 from what we hear
@Jamesnyc, it's called method acting and it helps produce some of the best movie performances, so as long as they go back to being healthy after the movie is over, I think it is their right to do what they need to do in order to give their best performance.
i'll show you how we got it...
when i trust you i will show exactlly what i have -

It's a busy morning for crazies. We've just applied the crazy tag to your ear. Now we just need to shave your head. Then everyone can see you coming.
'I guess I just feel much more satisfied with less now' this coming from someone who is independently wealthy is offensive
and so will his other friends...he's a wonderful guy who was misread by alot of people and we will continue to give him respect when we see him at all times...i will make it a point now of saying hello when he is there and i will make sure all the girls make it a point of saying hello to louie....
she is a little thin..she will gain al lthe weight back
she needs to eat something
SHE ALWAYS LOOKS "NEAR DEATH" !!! She only wieghed 25lbs already??? Eat something for gods sakes!!!
the actress will make sure it does not flop.
Ah who cares, this film is being released smack dab in the middle of a bunch of better or in some cases more popular movies (not necessarily better). It may be well acted and there may be a lot of popular celebs in it but that doesn't mean it isn't going to flop relative to the others coming out. All of this and i'll get it on redbox for 1 dollar.
Wow. Amazing how people slam female actresses for losing weight for a part. Did anyone give Tom Hanks crap for his scary "Castaway" diet? Whatev!
But someone answer me this.. what the heck is "thin squares of oatmeal paste" anyway? Are they talking about granola thins? Cos those things are good. I would diet for those, for sure.
Ummm, yes people DO give male actors crap for their ridiculous weight gain/weight loss diets for movie roles...
whatever with the first 1/2–second 1/2 is caring and tapering off.
If you're a straight male, you have to see Hathaway in the first half of "Love and Other Drugs". The second half is all chick flick though....
a little too think but audry was a very thin woman and had a wonderful lover for man years.
You're drunk gorgeous, go home.
tuna on whole wheat, pellegrino, and now water.......not an ounce of liquor
gorgeous gal, eat more, darling. Something's wrong with thinking she's a little thick.
Can't wait to see the movie. Anne Hathaway will be great.
🙂
15lbs in 2 two weeks???? I've been working on the same 10lbs for years now (LOL)
I don't think this is good for the body but whatever makes the girl a buck!
Put on the weight again and enjoy being properly healthy

Ow,She is so Cute I <3 her acting.
Who is the "Les" guy she lost weight for? And what is HIS deal?
Les Claypool – and he is worth it
Dear Marquee: Please inform why Ms. Hathaway was required to lose 25 lbs. Does the role of Fantine really require an established and popular actress. I do not remember who has played the role on stage or in the Gerard DePardieu movie. Certainly there are other actresses that have the proper body size without needing to lose weight. I like Ms Hathaway, but give someone else a chance.
It wasn't because they wanted Fantine to be skinny. It was because they literally wanted Fantine to look like she was starving (because the character is starving). Unfortunately that requires being thin to an unhealthy extent.
Because as the movie progresses, Fantine becomes thinner and thinner as she suffers from starvation. So they needed someone who was already very thin and then have them lose even more weight to show how someone who was in Fantine's condition would look.
The character isn't just supposed to be thin the way a tiny actress like Kira Knightley or something is thin. Fantine is supposed to be literally starving to death – so someone playing her has to shed enough weight off whatever their natural size is that they look like a ragged, starving homeless person.
I'm sure it was unhealthy experience, but it was temporary and just for the movie role. She'll gain the weight back.
Its one of the iconic roles in all of drama and theatre, every actress great or unknown wants it. Why wouldn't they give it to someone like Hathaway if she was willing to do the work that it took?
I think some people worry a little bit too much about optics when it comes to the choices artists make about their art. Her goal isn't to make you happy with her career or be a great role model, its to create fine art. The standard is pretty high for Les Mis so all the luck in the world to her.
she was told by the directors she had to lose weight
Thank you for the responses to my comment. I only saw parts of the movie and could not remember the entire plot behind Fantine's character. The way I interpreted Marquee's article was that of another actress trying to unnecessarily trying to slim down to meet someone's concept of a character image. As explained by the comments, the lose of weight seems to be crucial to the story. Thanks again for the enlightenment.
You admitted you weren't sure, and apologized?! I think you just broke the internet.
Didn't we just have this movie?
OMG, she was already rail thin...from where did she lose it?
From what I saw in the long preview I saw, it was from anywhere that she had even the slightest bit of fat or muscle (your body will often eat muscle before fat when you're starving). She truly does look like she is starving and worsening as the movie progresses.
muscle is burned after fat.
She was already one of the hottest...losing 25 lbs just makes her go to the top in the list!
Wow. You are sick.
You have issues.
Look how fat her cheeks are! Is that a double chin?
Lol
Lose 25lbs. Gain 25lbs. She's still a terrible actress.
Quick...write script for movie of Audry Hepburn's life...and there is your actress...Anne.
Oh please...that's a huge insult to Ms. Hepburn. Hathaway doesn't have one iota of the beauty, grace and class that Hepburn had. I just don't get Ann Hathaway's allure...I think she's truly homely and horse-y. Ugh.
