President Obama weighs in on Nicki/Mariah beef

The blowout between "American Idol" judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj was bad enough to draw the attention of President Obama, apparently.

During a recent call on "The Yo! Show," the president was asked about the "Idol" drama, which revolved around a contentious and curse-laden exchange between Minaj and Carey.

But for Obama, those fighting words don't signal an irreparable relationship.

"You know what, I think that they are going to be able to sort it out. I'm confident," Obama told the show's host, Michael Yo. "I'm all about bringing people together, working for the same cause. So, I think both outstanding artists are going to be able to make sure that they're moving forward and not going backwards."

"Idol" producers speak on Carey, Minaj dispute

Obama also neatly avoided taking a side in the disagreement when asked if he had a favorite out of the pair.

"Mariah, she's actually done some events for us, and I've gotten to know her and [husband] Nick [Cannon] and she's a wonderful lady," he said, while adding, "Nicki I don't know, but I've got her on my iPod."

Stevie Nicks is sorry she said she'd strangle Nicki Minaj

Since he pays attention to it, how does he think he'd fare on "Idol"? Well, the president responded, "You've heard me sing some Al Green, [but] I'm going to try to keep my day job."

Nikki Minaj. What a disgusting excuse for a human being. And a no talent musician. It is no surprise that Obama listens to her. He also listened to Reverend Wright for 20 years. And has been a life long devotee to Karl Marx.

He HAS to have some free time people!! Can you guys imagine how stressful it must be to be campaigning around the country, spending the American dollars while as a nation our debt is going higher and higher?? EVERYBODY needs an outlet, I mean, he has a personality and a life too! What's wrong with T.V. and up-to-date hip music on an Ipod? Had this been any important delegate, people will say "They have a life too" ... well so does Obama... I am not saying I am all for him though!!

Calm down people. All this talk of "why would he have time to talk about something so trivial?" is severely misguided. He was doing what looks like a pretty light-hearted interview (campaigning, right?), and someone probably asked him a silly question and he gave an answer. and of course everything on the internet is written so that it seems more important than it really is. so SETTLE DOWN. it's not like he called a press conference to make a statement on this.

I am disgusted that the president with the state of our economy finds time to comment on frivolous things like this. Pathetic. This is by far the most pop-culture obsessed president ever. Most of his conventions are bombarded with celebrities...Come on dust off your shoulder with Jay-Z! Make people who voted for you proud.

You are correct. This president is way too concerned about being "cool & hip" all the time. His office should come with a certain amount of dignity and reserve. He has turned the presidency into a sort of reality show with his appearances on talk and radio shows along with his "I've got that on my iPod too!" type statements and lip syncing pop songs. Please...

The problem is the President is not acting presidential. There was a time not long ago the President would only be interviewed by cream of the press corps. Now he his doing the talk show circuit. Instead of being asked questions befitting the office he is now reduced to celebrity gossip. I can't blame the people who ask the questions, even though they are wasting their opportunity with him. The President himself is wasting his own time and degrading the office by agreeing to be on these shows. He can be human, he can have opinions on trivial matters, but part of his job is to maintain the prestige of the office he is elected to.

President Clinton seems like he is a nice enough fellow, but, if memory serves me correctly, he was the first to go on the talk show circuit in order to seem more accessible to the common folks. I know that some people say that they like their presidents to be accessible; however, I would prefer that presidents set examples to which we can aspire. They are, after all, supposed to be representing what is the very best of our country, something that is hard to do when chatting with those idiot women on The View.

Seriously? Silly me, I thought Obama had more important things to do, like RUNNING A COUNTRY! This just confirms what I see a lot on comment boards, that Obama wants to me more of a celebrity than POTUS. The fact that he even knows about this cat fight shows that being current on pop-culture is more important to him than job creation or keeping diplomats safe. And Obama saying that he's all about bringing people together – the funniest thing I have heard in a long time!!

When Obama got elected, it was because Americans were fed up with a Republican Government that started two wars (one illegal and one justified) and in the process accrued a huge crippling debt ( Iraq war being very costly). Obama has implemented so much in his time as President, but has been constantly hindered by the Republicans on so many issues, policies which would have improved the American economy to a greater degree. I'm Australian, but if I had a vote, I would give Obama four more years to finish the job he started. The job to re-make America into the economic power house it used to be. A strong and just America is in the free world's best interest.

Who will I vote for?: The Democrat. They don't waste their money trying to convince me to vote for them with insults.
Why don't they waste their money?: Cause they know what they represent is the right thing. Republicans only worry about money. They have it, so they waste it. They can't come up with an intelligent argument or answer so they have to rely on insults. Thats pretty sad and childish. I want a grown up to run my country. Go Obama!

She has to understand that being a celebrity does NOT give you the right to carry on as if you should be worshipped, and this younger generation is not kissing butt...which I actually admire. Respect STILL has to be earned no matter HOW important U think U are.

She is no where in the catagory of Mariah Carey, who can actually sing and has been a long standing artist. But i noticed that she wasnt born in America and her parents arnt listed but it seems they where not USA Citizens ,,,, So is she a USA Citizen? she didnt seem to have made a claim.

It's simple, Nickki, America agrees on one thing, Mariah is a Diva and she gets a pass on everything. Until you achieve that status, which I don't see happening, shut up when she talks and like all of us, put up with whatever you says or does, after all, many have tried but few became Divas

And how exactly will cutting taxes to 20% without getting rid of any major exemptions help along with an additional 2 trillion in government spending help? Maybe an understanding of basic math would help you see how unrealistic Romney/Ryan are. I'm not thrilled with the president but I'd take him over a lying snake anyday.

OMG (Obama Must Go) He's sinking the presidency to a new low. He is a yes man who shouldn't be worried about stupid trivial matters like this. He needs to focus on how bad the economy is doing and the high unemployment rate. He's had four years to fix it or at least get it going in the right direction and he hasn't proved a thing other than the federal deficit is the highest it has ever been. It's time for a change.

Time to jet off to an important matter, mr. president, party with Beyonce and Jay Z. :/

Third, if he is "all about bringing two sides together" then why does he pass on every GOP event he's invited to and use his lapdog Harry Ried to block all conservative legislation? Fourth, who cares what he thinks? Oh, wait....I already said that. Lol

She's too good for people that have been in the music biz for 2 years that think they're a goddess. Minaj, let us know when you've sold 250 million albums, dominated charts for 20 years, and still look better than artists half your age. Until then, sit back, bring an iPad and jot some notes on how a real artist acts. You ma'am are no idol.

I'm just going to point out that Obama has since recovered every job lost in the recession when he took office, and now any job deficits remaining are jobs lost from before he took office.

And you know what? You don't like his talking about "the mess he inherited" or the like? Too bad. Facts are facts, and he's been trying as hard as he can with a congress that's given him the proverbial finger to fix things. if you can't see that, then I truly pity you.

    • @Patrick

You do realize that he was asked that question during an interview. Most people don't have control of what they are asked during an interview, they just answer the questions. I'm sure he would love the congress to focus on jobs, seeing their main focus has been on passing as many women's reproductive bills as they could to jam down the senate's throats. Mr. Boehner hasn't lifted a finger to get a jobs bill passed. Why? It would hurt all the republicans chances of getting re-elected. They don't want to help the American people. They just want to get re-elected. It's good for them to have unemployment stay high. Gives them one more thing to try to hang on the president, even though they have done nothing to promote jobs. Have you checked their approval rating lately? It is somewhere between 10-20%. Too bad the republicans came out publicly and said that they would do everything in their power to make Obama a one term president. Did they actually think we'd forget what they said?

      October 15, 2012 at 7:00 pm | Report abuse |
    • josh rogen

yes he has no control over the question but the fact that he knew what the questioner was talking about, and answered it shows he lacks the focus needed to solve the difficult problems the country faces.
