Celebs defend Big BirdAmong the topics covered during Wednesday's presidential debate were taxes, the deficit ... and Big Bird, who's quickly becoming a contentious sticking point in the run-up to the election. The "Sesame Street" character is beloved not just by generations who've grown up with the tall yellow bird, but also by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. As he assured the country Wednesday, he loves the childhood favorite - but that doesn't mean he's against cutting funding for PBS.
This isn't the first time Romney's taken a stance on "Sesame Street," as he said last December that he wasn't "going to kill Big Bird ... But Big Bird is going to have advertisements." Yet his statement on Wednesday immediately ricocheted across the Web, launching parody Twitter accounts and causing celebs to stand up in solidarity with their fellow entertainer. The Roots' Questlove warned, "yo son. RUN! @big_bird," while actress Olivia Wilde posted, "Mitt is smirky, sweaty, indignant and smug with an unsettling hint of hysteria. And he wants to kill BIG BIRD." Wil Wheaton cracked, "Pop quiz, Mitt: Coal and Big Bird are in two speeding trains in opposite directions. Who do you choose?! WHO DO YOU CHOOSE?!" as Jaleel White predicted backlash: "If Americans were pissed #NBC cancelled Law&Order, wait til Money Mitt cancels Big Bird @PBS O_o Anarchy!!!" Brit actor Simon Pegg was lost, Wednesday night, "I wake up and the first tweet I read says Mitt Romney wants to kill Big Bird. What's happening to the world?!!" Although @FiredBigBird and @BigBirdRomney are among the Twitter accounts that have been speaking on the character's behalf, according to "Sesame Street," Big Bird missed the whole thing. "Big Bird: My bed time is usually 7:45, but I was really tired yesterday and fell asleep at 7!" the PBS show posted to their account Thursday. "Did I miss anything last night?" |

I didnt hear either mention cutting their salarys or those of their appointees. How about making congress take a 50% pay cut and cut their free lunches in the cafeteria?
The man makes $2mm a year on investments alone, i want him and Obama to say they are willing to give up theri salaries as President to send back to the treasury.
Only after that can we put Big Bird on the table.
When Mitt Romney took over the Olympics he donated his entire salary and severance pay to charity. When he was elected Gov of Mass he declined the salary.
As far as Big Bird is concerned, Sesame Street and it's characters are a BILLION DOLLAR A YEAR INDUSTRY and won't be going anywhere anytime soon.
Mitt Romney also donated all the proceeds of the 2 books he's written to charity as well.
Forget about giving up their salaries as President. I want to see if either one would be willing to invest THEIR OWN MONEY back into the economy. Romney is a certified millionaire. If he promised to "stimulate the economy" by investing in the GDP, he'd get my vote in a heartbeat – and would most likely win the election by a landslide. Criticizing the current administration with nothing but obscure/false promises of your own won't swing the undecided voters who've heard all of that before.
He also gave up his salary as governor ... and he makes most of his money from investments, that is in the economy.
Well if you're gonna kill that big yellow bird, might as well fire up the big grill and get the rotisserie ready ! how long will he take to cook?
Set it anf forget it.
-
get out more–do you have friends?
If Mitt Romney gets elected, is he going to donate his presidential salary like Hoover did? Heck, why don't all of the representatives consider to do the same? What would the dollar amout be per year? For instance, there are approx. 535 members in congress, 100 members in the senate. Let's say they make an average of $162K along with the $400K of the presidents salary, the donation amount could be $8,020,000/year. Not every one would be willing to donate their income, but if even half did it would be a step forward. The dolar amout may even save Big Bird. Also, they should consider or look at how to cut the waste, the country would be better off. For instance, quit sending out "Vote for Me" flyers. My recycle bin is overflowing. A positive is I am saving a tree through recycling.
So when will Obama do that? We know the answer and we know why you left him out.
Funny, the fact that Obama is a millionaire is never mentioned, nor that most of the Congress are not hurting and exempt themselves from almost everything including Obamacare, this country needs term limits on its elected representatives.
It was John F Kennedy who took no salary during his presidency. No other president has done that AFAIK.
President Obama's not a rich man. His assets may add up to a million dollars. Does that make him rich in your eyes? He'd still have to work after he leaves the WH. When one is rich one can live on one's investments. One million dollars in assets does not a rich family make these days. Remember, he and Mrs Obama have 2 daughters to send to college.
PBS CEO's are the highest paid CEO's in the country plus they get government funding. Romney is a business man and he knows what he is doing. Be afraid Hollywood.
Yes Romney is a business man and he knew exactly what he was doing when he overloaded KB Toys, Ampad and Global Grinding with debt, charged millions in fees then bankrupted those companies leaving the employees on the street. Next will be Staples since Bain Capitol has their sites on them even though Mitt claims to have built the company from scratch. From what I've seen of Private Equity firms, it's not about building a company as much as it's about running away with the proceeds and everything else.
PK, what universe are you living in? Stapes is one of the most successful companies around.
And as far as the other companies mentioned, maybe the employees who are "out on the street" have bumped into some ex-Solyndra employees. If you remember Solyndra got a half-billion dollars in taxpayer money before going bust and according to the terms of the bankruptcy the private investors, one of whom includes a major Obama donor, will get paid back before the taxpayers do. Kinda funny how that works out, huh?
alright listen up republi-chumps and tea-billies... kids might prefer spongebob or johnny test or some other show but guess what? those are on pay cable which not every family can afford, not to mention teach kids nothing! here's an idea cut about a billion dollars from our military spending and give a quarter to PBS and the rest to veterans affairs! PBS is more than just Sesame Street anyway, they show educational and culturally relevant shows for people of all ages. but i doubt anyone who agrees with Mitt understands anything about culture anyway.
Or science for that matter. Good Post
Yes cut military spending .... give it to PBS so big bird can stay add free ... there is free tv all over the place it has advertisements ...military spending provides for some of the most innovative things (like the internet) and provides some of the best paying jobs for skilled workers to advance in their career. I know you are worried about people being able to watch big bird so they can be happy at mc donalds but when I was a kid I never watched any of that crap I went the hell out side ... then when at home I took stuff apart ... I'm successful without big bird ... so grow up.
Time to go back into your occupy tent and smoke your bong
Have you even watched Sesame Street lately? Its a weak shell of what it used to be. I dont get what the fuss is about. Its like throwing a fit because you cant play your 8 tracks in a cd player. Nostalgia is nice, but there's a time to move on
If you are responding to this post, you are probably too old for Sesame Street. Of course it is not as good as it used to be. (for you)
i interviewed at sesame street 20 years ago and should have taken that job...i know someone who works
there and its alot of work yet alot of fun.
s-x ... you just hide....
shhhhh though
Feels like an Arby's night...followed by tremendously large pooh...
I don't care about that Big Bird, just don't phuck with Elmo because you will get hurt Mitt.
Hate to burst your Elmo bubble, but if Big Bird goes, Elmo goes, too.
that's a common ground everyone connects to
Yeah let's all follow Hollywood actors and do what they say their all such great roll models.
I wonder how much money these "celebs" donate to PBS every year? Yep, that's right! Let someone else fund it.
Totally agree – why should the government pay for it? If you love the show so much, YOU fund it.
I do not with Mitt Romney taking PBS off the list of things we don't need. I know a lot of moms who would also agree. He needs to clean house in another way, not through educational programs that can benifit our children.
it might even 'binifit' you too.
Anyone who attempts to be a spelling nazi should be certain to spell the word correctly. It's 'benefit.'
It's a shame more people weren't outraged at that suggestion. As a child of the '70's I grew up with Sesame Street, The Electric Comiany and 3-2-1 Contact. They were educational and and even now I recall things I learned while watching them. I guess it's easier for parents to set children in front of shows like Spongebob Squarepants or (shudder) Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. It's just a shame.
are you a computer geek like me?
last I checked it isn't the 1970's anymore. Children have far more choices now. No need to subsidize this when we are dead broke.
CW, you need to check further. Children at the lowest end of the spectrum do not have access to the many choices you're assuming they have. Kids with broadcast TV choices, i e, poor children, watch SESAME STREET regularly and they get an early start on school as a result.
Poor kids have few choices. Repeat until you understand it, CW. PBS helps them do better in school. SESAME STREET isn't the sole educational TV show, there are also reading programs that help kids. SS is just the flagship show. Mitt Romney is as out of touch with real America as you were before you were reminded here. Hopefully you care about this. Romney won't give a d@mn.
But at this point Sesame Street is a very rich neighborhood.
June 2011 – Sesame St is worth over 232 million dollars
June 2011 – PBS is worth over 291 million dollars
These are two separate non profit organizations. Neither of them federal taxes since they are non profit, and they still get government subsidies. Their financial statements are available.
that was supposed to be pay federal taxes
where...14 tonight
wrked. nmrod
I really don't like either canidate, but Romney has a very good and valid point. We are borrowing tons of money from China and other countries to sustain the budget. When you are in a position of borrowing money to pay your bills you need to cut everything you do not need. Paying for PBS while borrowing money is like a family taking out an interest loan to pay for cable tv. It makes no logical sense.
See you tonight...34 saturday
No worries! let's just write that big yeller feller into his own newer...hipper show! I'm thinking "The Big Bird Theory"!
Big Bird is a symbol for the commercialization of public television. Do you really think anyone is defending him literally? You're nucking futs.
inside a rubber costume you people are f-cing nutjobs..you really are...
through a computer screen...
big bird is fake...real to children but basically fake...
Big bird will taste like chicken.
Sesame Street Inc makes enough money from almost 50yrs of syndication & merchandise it can stand on its own. There is no reason for the public to fund it anymore. Get real & grow up people. Oh, and by the way, Big Bird is about as real as Santa, Easter Bunny, or God so just keep defending a fake character & looking stupid
Good Lord, not only are you bitter and fickle you completely missed the point. Nobody claims that Big Bird is real, it's a symbol. By the way, thank you for being an upstanding and rare example and sharing the fact that you don't believe in God. That was very brave of you.
Know you don't believe in God you worthless tool. It's no wonder you don't have a life and lives on here trolling people.
out for some more fun..hahahaha
great comment.
In line with Mitten's suggestion about putting ads on PBS, let's also sell space on the sides on military vehicles - airplanes, tanks, APCs, missiles, etc, together with ammunition and other supply cartons, soldiers uniforms - OH ! ! - The possibilities are ENDLESS for the MINDLESS commercialization of everything ! ! ! - Right straight down the GoP alley ! ! !
No, no, the VERY BEST place to display sponsors who bought and paid for a product, is on members of Congress.
Let's see the source of all those dollars while they're voting against America and for their own personal private wallets.
I'm thinking bright orange jumpsuits with campaign donors in blue, lobbyists in white, and bribes in red.
The money spent on Big Bird is money well spent and a better education program than any of the teach-to-the-test programs each new prez comes out with. To eliminate support for PBS would be just plain foolish.
lol
is the best..and i want to be near his beak

Here's that clown posting those long stupid worthless comments again.
People just DO NOT COMPREHEND THE FACTS. I wonder how many children today watches sesame street, you can believe if any there isn't that many. Especially since there are now shows like DORA, DIEGO, KAI LAN and etc. on television. THE REALITY OF IT IS THAT SO MANY ADULTS HAS ALREADY MADE SESAME STREET OBSELETE as well as other PBS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. So who really holds this blame or fault !!!
Nah, mitt likes the bird, he watches the street every day. (How do you think he got so smart?) Mitt misses the count a lot, he never got to learn to count past 20. (That does include his toes, btw) Poor, poor mitt.
That actually sounds more like Joe Biden to me.
Actually, unless Mitt Romney is that veteran who lost in dick to frost bite...he should be able to count to twenty-one.
Mittens was off playing graba.s.s. in france during the war. There was no frostbite, but I'm sure some diseases involved.
Obama is so smart he can count to 57 (states)
Isnt big bird gay?
Now I know I will not vote Mitt, take your drity hand off of bigBird.

It makes me sad that Keith Urban has to deal with these two. They both need to shut up and do the job they are being over paid to do. You're just showing the whole country what kind of people you really are. Hang in there Keith – I'm really excited that you've signed on to do the show. I just hope both women don't ruin it.

Add parallelPsalm 23
King James Version (KJV)
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

PREY,,WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM
no one is going to pray for anything other than you to stop posting this.s.h.i.t.
CNN PLEASE limit posts to 200 words, then people would have to think about what they want to say and how to say it efficiently.
Hey look! The idiot can copy and paste stuff, yay! What a winner!!
The celebrities had better feed the Big Bird themselves if they so want it.
utah's friday...
big birds beak anytime he wants!
Forget Romney and Obama make Big Bird the next president then things won't get any more screwed up then they currently are in Washington DC.
We're broke! People can either support themselves or starve, including that phag Big Bird!
You can't punish Big Bird because of failed Washington leadership over the last 40 years have a heart.
If all the actors are so concerned, let them support Big Bird. I love PBS but let them get funding from private supporters or advcertising. Get out of my wallet. I support Mitt, he is on the right track.
Big Bird better wake up. Mitt are serious about killing you off or selling you to the Chinese.
Mitt is a ruthless venture capitalist. You better believe he'd do it.
GA HEAD
his beak anytime he wants!
