Seth MacFarlane to host 85th Academy Awards

It’s amazing what talking into the wrong microphone at the Emmy Awards can do for your career.

Just one week after Seth MacFarlane’s mic mishap, which he recovered from by joking, “This is what happens when you don’t come to rehearsal,” CNN has confirmed that the “Family Guy” creator will host the 85th Academy Awards.

“We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars,” telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a press release. “His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh. He will be the consummate host, and we are so happy to be working with him."

It’s been a good year for the funnyman, who directed, wrote and lent his voice to “Ted,” which grossed more than $54 million its opening weekend in June. And in September he hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the first time.

"It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars," MacFarlane said via the press release. "My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast."

MacFarlane also tweeted the news, along with a video involving his dad and some "barely used" bathing suits:

The Academy Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, February 24 on ABC.

The Oscars have been on a "downhill slide" for years.....believe me I know, have watched them forever!! There's a reason that Eddie Murphy "refused" to host....HELLO!!! They used to be a "glamorous event", now they're a "big fat bore" and Seth will bring them down with a big "crash landing". Couldn't they find a host that is "more charismatic"....like Rob Kardashian.....or someone with a "personality" like Tom Bergeron (the Bomb)!!

The country is about to fall off the fiscal cliff. The republicans are trying to bring us back to the stone age. The middle east is burning. Europe is choking on debt. Who gives a flying F*** who is hosting the academy awards. Get some lives people and figure out who you are voting for. No disrespect to Seth.

While I love Family Guy, like American Dad and FREAKIN' HATED Ted, I am kinda torn when it comes to MacFarlane himself. What I've seen of him live leaves me unimpressed. I'm as racist and misogynistic as the next guy (you all are inside, jeez, get over yourselves), and I enjoy that kind of humor. But for some reason, outside the FG context, his jew jokes aren't funny. No one, ever, will top Billy Crystal coming out as Hannibal Lector.
Just don't see this as being funny. I'll watch, but I'll have the remote in my hand.

Don't know what he's done in the movie industry but I know that he's hilarious. He just needs to stay away from that creep talk show host Piers Morgan–unless he does a good imitation of him soon.

"Non Celebrity?" Seth has 3 network television shows this season (Family Guy, The Cleveland Show and American Dad) with two of them enormously popular in reruns with the third soon to follow. His directoral debut was one of the top comedies this summer.

Just because he doesn't show up every other day on TMZ or in the gossip rags just means that he's probably more grounded that many ot today's so called celebrities.

I love Whoopi and Billy but they did their bit. Let's try something/someone new.

I feel sorry for DD. Anyone with so much misguided anger must be truly miserable. I hope that DD can open up his mind a little bit and become a happier person. Remember when politics were about ideas and ideals? When people from both political parties differed, respectfully, in ideology? Now MOST people simply use politics as a way to vent their unhealthy anger. We should hope and pray that people like this (both liberal and conservative) find their way in the world and become HAPPY people with a healthy feeling of self-worth and self-confidence. It used to be about ideology; now its about 'sides'. When everyone started referring to the political party that wasn't their own as 'them' or started saying 'our side' that or 'their side' this–THAT is when things started to revolve around anger and hate, lets hope we can move back to something more productive.

Family Guy was much funnier before MacFarlane decided to become the most political guy in the world. Ever since it came back it has become ALL about politics. No longer the humor of family interactions it has went down the toilet. Simpsons is in the same boat. WE get it!! You are totally in the tank for the libs which is probably why you got this gig. Good for you. You can now join the famous ranks of mediocre comedians like Tina Fey and get tons of free publicity.

Economics and business is one area that the dems fall short in. Pretty important area for the elected officials. Sure some are witty, intelligent, and likable, but that does not mean they will be a good elected official Look at Obama for example. He doesn't know the first thing about the economy, but I would say he is intelligent. Dems also make what I call "bumper sticker issues" their primary focus as a way to get votes. They are more in to feelings as opposed to common sense. Just my thoughts.

Well you have to give the guy credit, he recreated the exact same show (Family Guy, American Dad, and the Cleveland Show), and people bought it.

I don't know why they picked Seth MacFarlane to host the Oscars. His shows are vulgar, crude, disrespectful and offensive. Oh wait, I forgot. Hollywood doesn't have much morals.

I wonder if Peter Griffin, Stewie Griffin, Brian Griffin or Glenn Quagmire will be the actual hosts?

Or could it be Stan Smith or even Roger?

I guess we will just need to close our eyes, tightly, during the entire Awards show, and listen carefully for a voice we recognize.
