'Glee' returns! What'd you think?

New season, new guest stars, and "Glee" didn't hold back with its season 4 premiere Thursday.

The Fox show's return opened smack in the middle of an NYADA dance class where Ms. David Schwimmer - as Hudson's no-mercy dance teacher, Cassandra July, called Lea Michele's Rachel Berry - was feeling way in over her head.

With Rachel adjusting to being the new kid in New York, the big question for the premiere was who would become the new "Rachel" back at McKinley High in Ohio. Funny enough, it seems critics were almost afraid to find out the answer to that question.

Says Billboard: "The return of 'Glee' is something we've been wary about for months," pointing to the number of missteps the last season made. "It was hard to stay excited about 'Glee' by May, or to wish for more. But 'Glee,' we just can't quit you."

Time magazine's James Poniewozik felt the same way, saying that " 'Glee,' more than maybe any show on TV right now, has mastered the art of disappointing me just enough that I can never permanently give up watching it."

Thankfully, the season 4 premiere didn't make Poniewozik regret keeping the Gleeks in his life, as he was "pleasantly surprised" at how "Glee" made the parallel stories work. "For all its inconsistency ... it's still about something besides being a lucrative jukebox: it's about dreams and their limits, about risk, about discovering identity, about the terrifying work of finding your place."

New York Magazine's Vulture, too, wasn't intending to view "Glee" ever again, and yet, here we are, watching Kate Hudson pull off choreography that was "beyond what 70 percent of the series regulars are capable of," and sing on top of that. "Plus, her interactions with Rachel are the perfect blend of disengaged and bitter and mean."

The Hollywood Reporter took note of the new additions, characters seemingly meant to recall the now-graduated students "circa 'Glee's' first season," like Melissa Benoist's Marley, Jacob Artist's Jake (Puck's half-brother), and Dean Geyer's NYADA student, Brody (who, "in case you were wondering, which you were," is straight).

So what did you think of the season 4 premiere?

OMG why don't any of these kids go to college. This doesn't even make sense. These kids need a plan. They should be "doin' the most" instead of letting Ryan Murphy teach the world that it's ok to "do the least".

This show is a mess. But I still love it. And I want Blaine to have my babies.

I enjoyed the new season. The blend of college life students and high school glee students was a great marketing P/R ratings bonus. Kate Hudson was incredible and the new cast members should keep the show interesting. The show depicts realistic scenarios involving students of many different personalities and values. I do think that the show has began to overplay the gay story line to heavily and its lost the shock value or sensitivity some. Move past this and focus more on other issues plaguing our young viewers today, it will assure buy in with the viewers for sure. obesity is an issue as well as drug usage and addiction, parents out of work kids dealing with stress and pressures like loosing there homes, depression suicide, real stories giving kids a chance to relate to a show also create happy stories of the unusual student who forms a group or club to help others benefit show more charitable stuff.

Disappointed. NYC not that interesting. Miss Finn, Brody a waste, Jake is interesting. Actually like high school scenes better that New York and that shocked me.

The lead Black women have to be fat so that their beauty and talent doesn't overshadow the whites and gays. Don't you know this is about whites and gays? Especially the gays?

So sorry that once again, all the leading young black women are fat. Glee should be ashamed.

I thought it was very good–nice mix of the school & NYC. It needed to get out of its rut..I think this season will be very interesting with Rachel & Kurt being in NYC trying to make it, and the mix of returning students with the new kids should be good.

I absolutely love this show! I like how quickly it opened back up into the lifestyles of the kids who graduated, and those who hadn't. I also like the fact that they had auditions for some new members of the New Directions. The song choices were amazing and I'm enjoying the new characters. They give an interesting taste/twist to the story. I will admit that I was sad not to see FInn, Puck, Santana, Mercedes, or Mike Chang. I'm sure they will pop up in later episodes.

I really only watch the show for the singing; the other dramatic stuff I couldn’t care less about. Daren Criss is a great singer, and of course, Lea Michelle rocks. I was surprised Kate Hudson is such an accomplished singer too, and her dancing was quite good. I wasn’t going to watch the show this year until I saw my Hopper recorded it with a PrimeTime Anytime recording. My Dish coworker thinks I’m crazy for being a middle-aged man who watches the show. I figure why not if my whole family likes it, and we get more variety with the way our Hopper records everything at night on the major networks.

Kate Hudson was fantastic. As nasty as Jane Lynch, and as appealing as Gwyneth Paltrow. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. I'm also hoping that Jacob Artist's Jake will get some great story arcs. However, other than "American Americano". I didn't think much of the musical numbers they chose to use on that episode. Usually you can count on no fewer than two great numbers on Glee. Even Adele's tune fell flat...nothing to compare with the Adele medley they used last year.

I usually stick with shows I've watched since the beginning...however, after 15 minutes of this episode, Glee was removed from my DVR. Hard to believe a show that started out so great in it's first season eventually turned into unwatchable garbage.

Wow...so many negativity over a show. If you don't like shows "like this", don't watch it or comment on stuff like this. I get Freedom of Speech but so many of you look like idiots. I love the show myself, but it baffles me how seriously people take it. Who cares if a viewer is gay or physically challenged? The point of the show (whether you'd accept it or not...) IS about acceptance and just...singing songs. I don't give a crap for those who watch pro sports, Star Wars or freakin' Twilight. Chill out...

I just watch it for the pure hilarity of watching the show try to make it realistic that decent looking dudes are going to be falling over at the feet of fat, ugly chicks in real life. This show is comedy beyond belief. This year we get the big fat black chick – can't wait to see her and the wheelchar bound kid hook up.

I didn't mind the split locations and the new New Directions are very good, but Kate Hudson is totally miscast as a dance instructor. Why? She can't dance! There were so many cuts in her one dance number that they might as well have been a series of composed stills run together. Hudson single-handedly jumped this particular shark.

One of the best episodes yet, Glee really brought the heat last night. Kurt's dad was brilliant as ever. The music was top notch, they FINALLY used a song by The Fray, and that Americana/ Dance Again mash-up was brilliant. Kate Hudson is going to bring us that fiery adult talent we haven't seen since Idina Menzel's time with us. I was afraid that Glee was losing its edge until the last few episodes of last season. However, I've been proven wrong again: Glee is back with its breathtaking arrangements, honest characters, and raw sentiment. 5 stars

I think Glee remains one of the best TV shows ever. This opening episode to season 4 introducing the newbies and seeing Rachel struggle and watching brave Kurt go to New York – poignant and quirky per usual. And the musical numbers were awe inspiring. My fav scenes are Kurt and Dad and Rachel in the bathroom at 3am meeting the new guy. And the incredible Darren Criss who really remains adorable. Sigh. I miss Santana and Mercedes and Puck... Okay enuff said.
