ABC orders Joss Whedon's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' pilot

The man who brought us a mega Marvel success this summer with "The Avengers" is aiming to do the same on the small screen.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC has placed a pilot order for "S.H.I.E.L.D.," which will be co-written by "Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon and possibly also directed by him, if he has the time for it. (As it stands, Whedon already has an "Avengers" sequel to consider.)

Inspired by the comic created by Jack Kirby, S.H.I.E.L.D. - the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate - is a secret law enforcement agency led by Nick Fury, who recruits aid from Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Hulk.

The live-action series would be a return to TV for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"  and "Firefly" creator Whedon, who has a three-year exclusive deal in place with Walt Disney.

Ummm, In the MArvel Cinematic Universe, SHIELD stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. Nonetheless, I cannot wait for this show to become a reality!

While do I wish this upcoming show all the best, and hope it will be good, It is premature to say that this show will be "good and worthwhile entertainment", simply because of the people involved in producing it. Heck, it hasn't even been written yet, much less filmed. The viewers and critics will decide only after it has been aired, whether it will be good, mediocre, or lousy, and not before then.

You guys need to understand the type of Money Avengers was looking at, they are already breaking the normal fabric of things by pulling off an Avengers theater re release this weekend weeks before the DVD/BLU RAY release, they made UNGODLY amounts of money. Importing a high octane action packed TV show to further enhance the Movie universe that will net them 10 times the amount Avengers did over the next 5 years is much more important than trying to make a project that "Might work".

Whedon is the man, they know this, They would not order a pilot and make him a possible showrunner AND director AND front man of Avengers 2 if they were not confident he was going to have the means to deliver and have fanboys drooling while he does it.

The Samuel Jackson character interesting? Ha ha. You're kidding right? The original was a WWII veteran, and a member of the Howling Commandos. He's MUCH more interesting than putting in an obligatory black character with his name. If they wanted a black character, they could have used The Black Panther. He's been part of The Avengers any way.

How about bringing Nick Fury back as the caucasian man he was originally in the Kirby comics?

How about we keep the far more interesting Sam Jackson version? And let's not pretend he was changed solely for the movies; the film character is based on the Nick Fury from the Ultimate Marvel universe.

Most people (well, those with more than 3 teeth) see characters in terms of far more than skin color. For Fury, his defining characteristic is that he's a bad a$$. Hence, Samuel Jackson. If the fact that he is black ruined it for you, well, I'm sure they'll make a movie for people with your mentality any day now. Maybe Dukes of Hazard 2.

I don't know if this will work.....I'm a huge fan of the Avengers, but what they should at least do is run short movie teasers (20-30 seconds) on ABC leading up to the movies in 2013-2015. Would get comic geeks to tune in to shows they normallly wouldn't touch with a 10 ft pole.

Avengers being the biggest movie of the year = time to cash in while you can. I can see the quality of this series, the follow up individual movies for each superhero, and everything else going down hill very quickly as the studios will want to cash in as quickly as possible. Look at what has already happened to the 2nd Hunger Games movie.

Well, ABC does have Fillion over "wasting" his time on Castle – and the movie helped kill off most of the cast's dead weight.

I'd take a Firefly reboot any time Disney wants to do something that would actually excited, rather than dismay, the comic-con base of the genre.

SHIELD will not fit on a small screen, exspectations will be too high, performance too low. Go take a look at the "Blade" series to show how that breaks down.
