Utah station won't air NBC's 'New Normal'

If all publicity is good publicity, Ryan Murphy's new NBC series, "The New Normal," is basking in it.

Earlier this summer, the organization One Million Moms launched a boycott against the sitcom, about two partners hoping to have a baby, because the org found it "harmful to our society."

But members of the group who are based near Utah station KSL won't have to work hard to avoid "The New Normal," since the station has decided not to air the new fall show.

"From time to time we may struggle with content that crosses the line in one area or another. The dialogue might be excessively rude and crude. The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive,"  Jeff Simpson, the CEO of KSL's parent company, Bonneville International, told The Salt Lake Tribune.

"For our brand," Simpson said, "this program feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time."

"New Normal" star Ellen Barkin has criticized KSL"s explanation of its programming decisions, tweeting over the weekend, "Shame on u @kslcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?"

She then expressed her gratitude for the show, adding, a "Thank you to @NBCTheNewNormal @MrRPMurphy @AliAdler &all our brilliant writers.Thank you for giving me something so important to work for."

"The New Normal" is scheduled to premiere on NBC at 9:30 p.m. ET/8:30 CT on September 11, and the network said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly that it's "confident that the show will find another home in the Salt Lake City market."

It sounds like that may have already happened, as the general manager of KUCW and KTVX, Matt Jacquint, told The Salt Lake Tribune that they're currently looking for a time slot to broadcast the show on the weekends.

This isn't the first time KSL has decided not to air one of NBC's new shows. Last year, it was the new fall program "The Playboy Club" that was pulled from KSL's airwaves.

The station has a right to carry whatever content it wishes. When i was in school, I remember there was a Utah station that wouldn't play George Michael because of the explicit and suggestive lyrics.

If this was a christian (pat robertson) channel, would you expect them to air it? Business can do what they please. They rely on sponsors and sponsors speak with their money. If this works for them, it is not for public opinion to decide.

I love how people are so dense that they have to try and fight it. Honestly. If you don't accept gays, fine. To act immature and not allow a SHOW to air? Really? Stop trying to hide the fact that there are gay people out there. They're all over the place. I know some people saying that this show is "forcing gays down our throats and forcing us to accept it." Has to be the dumbest thing I've ever read. It's a show! You don't HAVE to watch it! There's thousands of other channels out there! or better yet, TURN IT OFF.
It just irritates me how small minded some people are when it comes to this topic. Seriously.

Even though I don't morally agree with the show is just stupid. The acting is horrible. Not a good influence for kids in terms of being teaching them to make good decisions. TV has definately been dummed down and has little value anymore other than for some cheap laughs and stupid banter.

The current prominent portrayal of groups that are only a tiny fraction of actual society shows that the struggle they have to be accepted, or even recognized, is clearly being won. I applaud the recognition that people of all varieties have similar peaceful and loving desires for their lives and the right to live them, but having them thrown in my face at every turn is not appropriate! As with the incorporation of various ethnic groups in decades past, the incorporation of diverse lifestyles, genetic anomalies and disabilities is important – but overkill is not. I won't be watching more than a couple episodes of this series, putting into perspective the number of folks I know as friends and meet casually who are represented here.

i was born and raised in utah, but i have also lived in CA and NV. I watched a couple episodes of the New Normal on Hulu, and I have to say this group is completely wrong. I can't say it is my new favorite show or anything, but the message that "family is family and love is love" is NOT harmful to society. Encouraging a little girl to be herself? No, I don't consider that harmful either. I think the harmful thing is thinking in this day and age that you have a right to tell someone what they should do or whom they should love.

Have you ever considered that maybe you just have a learning disability? Not all knowledge is about reading, writing, and arithmetic. Perhaps the greatest lesson this planet needs to learn is about each other. Maybe you just learn to understand someone else's point of view. You don't have to agree with it, but until you learn to understand it, you're part of the problem, not the solution.

Umm... I think elementgirl was just saying that it's just a stupid sitcom. I'm inclined to agree; most of the time sitcoms have very little to offer to society as a whole, and tend to be lowest common denominator humor, regardless of subject matter.

Methinks you should lay off the coffee, milady. You lost your composure and threw wild accusations rather rapidly. Perhaps a nice chamomile to calm your nerves?

The thing I don't understand is how people can let Jersey Shore, Keeping up with the Kardashians, and all those stupid shows that have NO point whatsoever air. Getting thousands to millions of dollars for no reason. Yet, this show, teaching people of love and family, and other things, cannot air. Getting many hate comments because there happens to be a gay couple in it.
      THAT is what bewilders me.

That KSL won't air this series is no surprise.KSl is the media puppet for the LDS church. The station is located right across th estreet from the LDS headquarters. I lived in UT. (Salt Lake county) for ~3yrs. I found it to be a hate filled and exclusionary place. The people there are glassy eyed at the prospect that one of their own LDS is running for POTUS. These people are scary and un-american to say the least.

That's funny, because my in-laws are all Mormon and I find them to be the nicest people I know. As for this show, I kind of agree with R Burns above. I'm fine with the premise of this show, it's the execution I don't care for. I got really burned out on Ryan Murphy's show Glee during season 2. It just seemed that he was trying waaaay too hard to promote a pro-gay agenda. Based on what I've seen of his Nip and Tuck, Glee, and his American Horror Story it appears to me that subtlety and discretion are definitely not in Murphy's wheelhouse. I found American Horror Story and Nip and Tuck in particular to be very unsettling and creepy (which, I guess was the point of "Horror Story"). I love hard-edged dramas, but I didn't care for either of those shows. But obviously others do, and that's great for them. As far as gay portrayals, though, I'll take Modern Family's gay couple over Ryan Murphy's, or The Office's Oscar, etc. I just don't like the Murphy's shows.

As for this station refusing to air this show, that's their choice. They obviously know their market, or are Mormons themselves, so considering the subject matter, this isn't surprising at all (I actually wonder whether they do show Law and Order SVU too, anyone know?). I don't have a problem with it. After seeing those three Murphy shows, I get why they don't think this show works for their market. They've probably concluded based on their analysis that they'd get lousy demographics. I wonder though, if they show Modern Family (the Romneys apparently love that show too). There's two sides to this, after all. Religious bigotry is wrong too.

You forgot that part where maybe her husband is sterile, so there's something obviously WRONG with his body. In that case, she can be artificially inseminated and still conceive and give birth. This has nothing to do with morality or the viewers in Utah – at least not directly. This has everything to do with being unable to find local sponsors for the show. Sure, there are national sponsors, but local stations are expected to sell advertising, too, and without them, there's no show.

This is how tv (and radio) work: a show is aired. People either watch or don't watch. If people watch, the show stays. If people don't watch, the show goes.

There's really no need to "ban" a show simply because YOU don't want to see it. If enough people are like you the show won't be around very long at all.

You did note that button on your remote that says CHANNEL , didn't you? It means you have the control over what is 'aired' in your household.

Use it. And let others decide what they 'air' in their house.

Now, I'm no theologian, but I do know that God said in the Ten Commandments, "Thou shall not kill." But violence and murder pass for entertainment in our society, yet nudity and two guys having a kid is immoral? I can't even use the Bible to rationalize this thinking. The majority of stores are open on the Sabbath in Utah, People are still allowed to get divorced in Utah. I assume there is no morality police hauling people who take the Lord's name in vain off to prison. So why the focus in this TV show?

I actually live in this market. The local NBC affiliate doesn't play Saturday Night Live either. As much as everyone want to make this about politics, it is much easier for me to believe that this came down to revenue for the station. Law & Order handles scary and uncomfortable subjects. Will & Grace waved a big gay flag every episode. KSL ran both of those because they sold lots of ads. There may be some pressure they're feeling from groups like OMM but ultimately their the moral decision will be trumped by the financial one. My guess is they watched some of the previews, deemed that the show just doesn't match the audience that lives here and doesn't have the artistic quality to build the audience in time to survive. Arrested Development was brilliant but couldn't bring in ad sales. Cancelled. Two and a Half Men is rude, very crude, and not very funny but it has a huge audience share (presumably by aiming at the lowest common denominator.) It's in syndication and will likely run for another 10 season.

For the record, I am an Atheist, Liberal (for Utah,) Democrat who regularly donates to the help the gay teen homeless problem in SLC. For those who don't know SLC has a teen homeless rate higher than many major cities because a lot of gay teens get kicked out of their house and have nowhere to go if they come out to their parents. Utah has a problem with gays but, it's not because Ellen Barkin is channeling Archie Bunker in what looks to be a mediocre TV show.

KSL knows their viewers and made a conscious financial decision.

I applaud KSL TV. They have to a right to decide what programming they want to air. I am grateful that they are willing to take a stand. I don't know where some of you get your information, though.

@well: Just so you know, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons, as some would like to call us) has a large facility dedicated to providing relief to the poor, the naked and others suffering from disasters. Members of the church worldwide provide a lot of funds in humanitarian relief to the Red Cross and have people trained to man disaster relief shelters. We work with people to help them to improve their employment, find employment, and become self-sufficient so they aren't relying upon government hand-outs. In becoming self-reliant people gain back their dignity and self respect. I find it very disappointing to see liberals constantly trying to persecute my religious beliefs when you take no time to find out for yourself.

Its nice that your church believes in working together to better the lives of the unfortunate. But I am confused. How could such a church breed the Vulture Capitalist Mitt Romney? His destruction of the lives of the workers simply to enrich himself seems quite at odds with the values you offer. Yet he was a Bishop in your church. Can you explain that?

I'm actually really glad the Democrats are making gay marriage a big issue this election. I really hope Obama focuses heavily on it if he gets re-elected. Every minute the liberals spend fighting for something that doesn't effect me *at all* the less time and political capital they can spend ruining the healthcare system or pushing for higher taxes or otherwise trying to micromanage our lives.

I don't know, but I think Mr. Murphy is sitting back smiling and pretty excited that his new show will probably hit ratings high for a pilot because of all the publicity it is receiving. Whether it becomes a success afterward or not, at least now KSL has given it a big chance of success. Thanks KSL for your help in this matter.

Notice how liberals are taking every excuse possible these days to bash mormonism as a religion? Whenever there's something even tangentially related to the mormon church or someone who might be a mormon all you hear is how bad their faith supposedly is. Could it have something to do with the fact that the person running against their liberal messiah is a mormon? When Obama's pastor for 20 years says 9/11 was "chickens coming home to roost" and all sorts of racist bigoted tripe we're supposed to "love and tolerate" his religion, but when Romney is a mormon it's nothing but stir up hatred and fear of all mormons anywhere whenever possible. Hypocrites much?

I'm actually an atheist, I dislike religion in general, but I find it amusing how many liberals will go to defend certain religions (e.g. Islam or Obama's pastor) and viciously attack anybody who says something mean about them while ignoring those religion's bigoted beliefs. Then when the Republican nominee happens to be from some relatively minor christian sect they pull out all the stops to attack it at any chance. Look at the numbers. Support has been increasing dramatically for the past 15 years. Do you really think it's about to stop? Face it: old people tend to think being gay is wrong. Young people tend to have no problem with it. One of those groups is dying off. Seriously, just think about it from a logical perspective. Regardless of what you or I may think about it: It. Is. They don't believe in gay rights so that must mean that there are no gays. If there are no gays then that must mean that a TV program about gays is unjust and immoral so we won't let anyone that would like to watch such a show to do so. If you don't care for the show then you don't have to watch it. No one is going to force you to. Not running the show however is censorship. Not everyone shares your beliefs and should have to abide by your rules.

Censorship is good. Some things are just bad and need to be censored or disallowed. Our country has no morals today because of all the violence and gross stuff in the media. And yes I am saying the LGBT lifestyle is NOT normal. Political correctness is killing our nation. Not being able to target Islamic terrorist because it might be considered profiling, etc. Plus the LGBT freaks trying to get everyone to be like them and embrace their sickness. It is time the normal deacent people said enough is enough. I think after the election in November, when we the moral deacent majority speak through our votes, hopefully some of these freaks will settle back down

I feel that I should mention to some of you people that watching gay people on tv doesn't make you gay, and letting them alone doesn't mean you are gay yourself. It's being unable to leave them alone or keep your hands off them that is a sign of "gay panic." Stay calm, folks; I've been around hundreds of gay people and I am still a danger to the ladies.

As someone living in the state where this was announced...I'm not the least bit surprised. KSL is owned by the LDS church (aka Mormons). The fact that they're blocking this show is pretty much a no brainer, especially after they did the same to the Playboy Club las year, before a single episode aired, simply based on their assumption of the storylines. The majority of people in Utah who watch KSL are going to agree with this decision and probably wouldn't have watched the show anyways.
For those that want to watch the show, the CW affiliate will air it on the weekends, though an exact time slot is still being worked out. Not to mention nearly every tv show can be found online somewhere. I would theorize that the majority of the people who might be interested in this show are at least tech-savvy enough to know how to find it online if they'd rather not wait for the weekend re-airing.

The station is owned privately. Do you have a problem with people making a stand based on their morals? Apparantly you do. The thing that gets me about people who are so adamant about gay and lesbian rights are so willing to spew hatred and coerce people into their point of view. Keep up your goofy comments though. Show's like this seem to aim for the right place, but miss the point. I realize that we're entering a time where gays are becoming more accepted, but basing a show around them seems to highlight the previous shunning of the gay community, by virtue of the show being "cutting edge" because it features gay main characters. It reminds me of the sixties and seventies where there were TV shows about the white family who's new neighbors turn out to be black, and the whole show would be about the white families old hangups and discomfort about being around the black family and their "crazy" ways. In 2012, we no longer have shows like that because the idea of white families hanging out with black families isn't shocking. It's no longer an awkward topic. Black and white people simply co-exist for the most part, and it works out fine. We don't need to base a show around gay people who want a baby just to make a statement that it's okay, even though it makes a lot of people feel awkward. Let's not put gay people up on a pedestal because we used to shun them. When gay's having a baby on tv is still novel enough to base a show around, we haven't really accepted them yet. The show only exists because prejudice still exists. It's built around it. If we really accepted gays we'd ignore them and walk past them without giving them a second glance in the street, like we do everyone else.

    August 27, 2012 at 1:56 pm | Report abuse |
    • Rob

You have a limited point. However, gay people DO have children. Shows are about almost anything. Why not that? There is absolutely no reason to ban this show. The only reason it would be banned is due to bigotry. And that proves we are not 'there' yet.

Yes, this is the equivalent of those shows, and probably shows will become less self-conscious later on.

Perhaps KSL actually has a really good sense of what people do and do not want to watch.

Besides, must THE WHOLE WORD accept Hollywood standards hook, line, and sinker?

KSL has ensured that The New Normal will be available in the same market on another channel. So everyone wins. KSL protects their brand, those who want to watch the show can. Those who want to take a stand and support can do so without concern of being bombarded by the new normal standard of the feckless thugs who think that if you don't believe exactly like they do, you are automatically a bigot (which actually makes them bigots).

I think that the name of the show says it all...The New Normal tries to set up alternative lifestyles as perfectly normal and acceptable. Just as run of the mill as anyone else's lifestyle. Afterall, every sort of lifestyle should be acceptable, right? Well, I mean not a two parent Christian home where the father figure is a role model and not a buffoon. That would be completely silly and not warrant any air time what so ever – there is NO market for that. Trust Hollywood on that point. But a gay couple wanting to have kids – that's something society certainly wants to encourage and demystify so that we can all be more progressive in our thought processes. I agree with the idea that if the show pushes the envelope too far, it will be cancelled before the end of season 1. Then again, Desperate Housewives aired for something like 9 seasons, so there is no telling just what people will watch these days.

And you sound like a bully, Craftymiser. You can hide your bigotry behind your Bible, but it's still bigotry. The station is privately owned and can do what they want. However, they are on the wrong side of history and years from now will be looked at just like the folks who tried to block segregation. Ignorance is as ignorance does. It's time to move into the 21st century and leave these hateful myths behind.

Thanks to christianity, the western world spent 1000 years living in the dark ages.

I think you and your god should go someplace and be alone. Let the rest of us progress. We don't want your values or your morales or your sanctimonious excuses for keeping us from growing and enjoying life.
