'ALF' movie in the works

Just as they did with "The Smurfs," Sony Pictures is aiming to bring another '80s classic to movie theaters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has sealed a deal to acquire the rights to the TV series "ALF," with the goal being to turn the comedy into a live-action/CGI film.

As fans will recall, ALF was the wisecracking alien from Melmac who moved in with the suburban Tanner family after a crash-landing. The series ran from 1986 to 1990, with the show's co-creator and puppeteer Paul Fusco serving as ALF's voice. THR notes that Fusco's expected to voice the furry alien creature in the film version as well.

The project doesn't have a writer or director attached to it, but "Smurfs" producer Jordan Kerner will produce the "ALF" film along with Fusco and "ALF's" other creator, Tom Patchett.

The team behind the "ALF" movie are no doubt hoping they'll have another "Smurfs"-sized success on their hands. That film grossed $563 million worldwide and spawned a sequel, which is scheduled to arrive July 31, 2013.

It's been a little over a year since it was announced by Sony that ALF (classic '80s TV series) would be getting motion picture treatment. I wasn't old enough to remember ALF's original run on NBC from 1986-1990, but do remember syndicated re-runs during the early '90s, and have collected all 4 seasons of the show on DVD. ALF was the type of show that spoke to me.

I also do pray and hope that fans get to see the puppet version of ALF, and not just a CGI-hybrid animation. And also pray and hope that ALF movie producers and directors could and might be getting close to casting the roles of Willie, Kate, Lynn, and Brian Tanner, and additional characters... and if any of the former TV show cast (Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson, Benji Gregory, Anne Meara, Liz Sheridan, etc.) get the invite to make a cameo appearance in the new ALF movie.

I love ALF, and am looking forward to its theatrical release. As for the movie's plot... it would remain to be seen if fans will get to see the story about his life on Melmac, before his journey to Earth... and his time with the Tanner family. If the first movie does well, and a second movie gets the green-light... I could see a possible second movie with ALF being captured by Alien Task Force... and ALF escaping, then reuniting with the Tanner's, and reuniting with his Melmacian family. I hope that Paul Fusco and the other movie staff give fans something respectful and meaningful to the legacy and integrity of this classic '80s show.

As long as Alf does not go innaprorpratie, I'll be glad. It's sad that he'll be CGI. If they wanted to make him more real, they could use the puppet and then use CGI to enhance mouth, eye, leg, etc. movement, much like Adywan is doing with yoda in Empire Strikes Back: Revisited

I wish they would make a movie about a guy who dresses up in a black outfit and fights crime with really awesome toys he has made because he's a billionaire or maybe a guy who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and fights crime using his dna-skewed abilities like shooting webs out of his arms....yeah that would be a cool idea.

    • i remember

I watched the whole tv series when I was a kid, but having seen an episode as an adult, I was shocked by how unfunny it was! Now, I recall the animated series actually being really cool. Although, I won't be tracking it down online lest my positive memories of that be ruined as well. I still do have hope that this movie could be funny, but isn't the only chance it has to be funny rooted in it being a self-deprecating parody of itself?
