How much is Mariah's rumored 'Idol' payday?

The speculation's underway on just how much Mariah Carey's making as a new "American Idol" judge, and reports suggest that she might've hit the jackpot.

People magazine reports that the superstar singer, who announced Monday that she'll sit at the judges' table for "Idol's" next season, has reportedly netted an estimated $18 million for the gig.

"Her deal is rumored to be just under $18 million for one year with an option to renew," an inside source said to be familiar with Carey's negotiations told People.

If this is true, it means Mrs. Nick Cannon might have received the highest celebrity payout ever to appear as a judge on a show of this kind.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Lopez allegedly made close to $12 million on her first season of "Idol," while Christina Aguilera got a reported $10 million for the third season of "The Voice." New "X Factor" judge Britney Spears is said to have landed a $15 million windfall when she signed on to the "Idol" competitor's new season.

Rumors aside, one thing is for sure: Carey's excited to get started at her new job.

"As a singer, songwriter and producer, it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back to American Idol," Carey said in a statement on Monday.

I think this is their last chance. If Mariah can't jumpstart it, they need to take it off the air for a while. It would only take a 5 year hiatus, and it could be revived and be as big as it ever was.

Hasn't been watchable since Simon left the show. The auditions are the only entertaining part, and after that, they limp to the barn without him. Mariah and her fat paycheck won't change that. Tyler was awful as a judge (99% of his feedback was: "It needs more 'K-K-K-K-YAY-YAH!!!"), and J-Lo was just on there to restart her career. It's had a good run, but now it's time to either get a new "Simon" to carry the show, or take this thing out back and put it down. Let kids go back to being discovered the old fashioned way: by not being terrible.

Why not let 3 people who really need some money, be the judges. A teacher, a fireman and a police officer. Pick ones that listen to music and know something about it. They are capable of judging and they would appreciate the salary...which they deserve !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope there's no hate for Mariah. After all, she's being 0FFERED the money. Would you say, "oh no, that's too much"? It's just a matter of Fox gambling that viewership will increase with her on "Idol". Then they can also ask for more money from advertisers who will also gamble on Mariah's name alone. Who knows, she may suck as a judge.

But what is FOX getting for that $1million they pay you? Can you guarantee that you would being enough ratings to the series to warrant that check? Advertisers will line up for Idol if Mariah can bring the ratings.

I can gurantee that her name carries 18 times more weight than yours, which is why she's being paid 18 times more than you are asking.

And the fact that you do not even understand the business side to how this works shows that you don't even deserve close to the paycheck you are requesting.

And, I bet she is a far better singer than you too....just a hunch on that one....but her recording history versus your non-existent one is a pretty big clue.

are you crazy. I am a singer by trade and she has the perhaps the best range I have ever heard. It is about time they actually had a female singer, who is more than just a dancer who can sing a little. I think she will be truthful and wont be persuaded by Randy to give a standing ovation to individuals that he likes. I got so tired of them doing it this year, and it was a little obvious when he would pull on Jenifer's arm to get her to stand.

I think to make this a truly talent show they should have the jugdes be the only ones that actually pick the winner. I don't have a problem with allowing the American audience to pick those that want to continue to come back. But if this was a really true talent show like they say then only the judges qualified to judge should get to vote for who they feel has the most talent and star appeal. othewise, it's just a popularity contest and nothing more. A few have won in the past that we all know didn't really deserve to be the winner and a few of them haven't set the world on fire with their "so called" talents. Stopped watching after the first two or three seaons.. another waste of my time which I can't get back in life.

  79. ah...

They are going to pay the diva $18 million. Am I the only one that thinks that what these entertainers get paid is obscene? The middle class works their azz's off, working 40 hours a week. They sit on a panel for an hour & get $18 million. Do you ever wonder why the 99% are a little disgusted. Our wages have remained flat for at least 20 years, but the 1% have seen their wages climb 275%. Just plain not right! By the way, I wouldn't pay her a dime. I have never liked the diva. The show is nothing more than a popularity contest now anyway. The concept of the show is gone.

People get paid that much in the entertainment industry because their name alone will add millions in profits to whatever they do, be it a tv show, a movie, whatever. Why should the network make a billion dollars from the show, but the judges should not get anything? This is why she will make that much for one season, because the show will.

amen! I have what some consider a decent job and I feel fortunate to have it but I struggle sometimes to rake enough money up sometimes to buy one lousy gallon of milk. I believe in being well compensated but the difference between the haves and the have nots continue to grow. Yes the disparity is obscene. I wish I could make just .05% of this amount so I could rest easier at night as well. Like I said, being well compensated when deserved should be expected but it does reach a point where it becomes obscene!!!

Hey, Einstein, where do you think it comes from? Advertising revenue, iTunes downloads from the show, and cd sales from the people who appear on the show.
